The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

My son really wants to play Skyrim but he has a older pc. A tad below the minimum spec. The saving grace is he has an older 4:3 monitor so 1280x1024 is the max resolution he will be running at.
He has an AMD x2 4200 (2.2 ghz) with 2 gigs of ram, an ATI 3850 card with 256 megs of ram running windows 7.

Will it work?

It might run, but not well. And certainly not at 1280x1024 (which is above 720p btw).

Has this been posted? QD Inventory. It's not perfect but it works till something better comes along:

There's no readme. To where do I install this mod?

I have an HD 5850 as well and I also had this "stuttering" issue. What seemed to work for me was turning off AA and Anisotropic Filtering in the options menu of skyrim then using catalyst (11.11a) to do all that. Runs a lot smoother for me and I rarely see frame drops.
Everything else was maxed in the 3d graphics settings as well in catalyst.

Excellent! I will give that a try later tonight. I will be so happy if it works.

I am playing Skyrim on pc, but unlike most of my pc games I am actually running it to my 42" 1080p television instead of my monitor, because I think the game plays ok with the xbox controller and I like this option better.

Anyway, the text for quests and captions is a little small for me on the larger TV at the distance I am from the TV. I can read it, but it would be great if the font was a tad bigger.

Is there any way to increase the font size? I looked through the OP and didn't see anything. I tried Google too. Forgive me if this has already been answered earlier in the thread.

Hah I echo this question. I tried playing on my tv at first as well, but I felt like an idiot sitting 3 feet from the screen because I couldn't read the damn text! If there is a fix for this it would be sweet, this game definitely deserves more than what my laptop monitor can produce.

I downloaded the water mod and I feel like I am getting some graphical issues with it. But I can't remember if it happened before I had the mod or not. For instance, coming down from Dragonreach where there are the little waterfalls and "moat" thingies, when I look around, I see like a straight line that stays there when I rotate my camera, kind of like clipping, and it looks weird. Anyone else get this? I can't think of a good way to describe it.

I can't be the only one here...

Alright gaf, so I finally got my copy yesterday and would like to modify it.

Here are my hardware settings:
i2600k @ 4.6
GTX 580 1.5gb @ (950core&shaders/2225mem)
8GB RAM
2560x1600

Since this is a RPG, I don't need 60fps at all times or anything so what I'd like to know is what mods can I use to max out the visuals while keeping the original style of the game. What I mean by this is that I don't like some of the over contrasted and over saturated look I've seen from FXAA injector and the advanced shaders mod

I'm looking to improve on what's there already unless there are some must haves like better night sky and such.

Any feedback is apprecaited.

I'm gonna be the guinea pig and test ENG patch 5. I tested patch 1 and it was terrible. This one supposedly fixes stuttering. I will report with in 20.

Been playing for about 20 hours now, and the Crash to desktop bugs just started rearing their ugly heads. Feels like I get one every 30 minutes or so, the crashing always happens when they're trying to load a new area. It didn't do this before around the 20 hour mark. Anyone know of a solution?

Yea, worse performance and I can't see a damn difference. I don't know if it's in some of the settings the patch comes with but I don't feel like messing with it as my game is as good as I want it to be right now.

So I used a third party Large Address Aware "maker" take my TESV.exe and make it large address aware...

Now i'm seeing a TESV.exe.4gb thingy on the nexus... should i go back and change what I did, or do they both do the same thing?

Which is better and what have you guys done who have made your games LAA?

So I'm getting a bunch of random CTDs after playing for a couple of hours, I tried to lower the sounds setting to 24 bit 44100khz, but I only have 16bit 44100khz. Would that alleviate my random crashes or should I try something else? I have 8gb of ram if t helps.

When I use the 4GB loader the map runs much more smoothly but I get no other improvements yet some BAD stutter moments when I sweep to look behind me (then it smooths out) So no go for me.

For the record.. I was getting the same thing and making my game Large Address Aware, SEEMS to have fixed the problem... not a crash since... There are surely other factors at play for many people causing these crashes but I have had luck making the .exe LAA

in my particular case I can only guess that after a couple hours the Ram usage built up to high levels and the game crashed as a result... LAA heightens the ceiling quite a bit and have had no problems... Add that papyrus thing in your .ini as well... posted above on this page .. i've had that there for a while...

I want to use LAA, but I'm afraid of screwing up my save. Has anyone here had any problems using LAA in terms of losing their game save?

I haven't.. and i applied the patch well after i had started the game... I got it off google, just put large address aware exe and it's a small third party thing that does a one time modification to the file...

Well. I managed to go online with Steam yesterday, and set Skyrim to not automatically update before it... updated. Today I sign in and what does it do? Automatically update. I even checked the setting during the update, and it was still set to 'Do not update'.

WTF.

Now I'm getting crashes. YEY PC GAMING.

Anyone playing this on a 27" iMac (Bootcamp) and can tell me how it runs?

I am. What are your system specs?

I have the 3.4ghz i7
6970m
12gb ram

I'm actually using my TV as my monitor, so I'm running at 1080p. I'm also using Liquid ini settings with ugrids at 7, so it's better looking than normal Ultra settings (but more demanding), also using heaps of high res texture mods. I'm getting 30-50 outdoors and 60 indoors. If you ae playing on your actual iMac monitor, then I would prefer to play at native res but with lower settings, you can get 30fps at native with shadows a little lower (shadows are probably the most demanding setting) and it will look incredible.

game only TRULY uses two cores... the other cores are active but are not utilized... so unless you overclock your proc., it's not going to matter.

Yeah I understand. I'm currently using an Athlon II X4 3Ghz. Jumping to the Phenom X6 that can overclock to 4Ghz would make a difference for my setup. Not a super huge difference, but a difference none the less.

Normally that setting resets itself if you launch the game from Steam. If you were running the old TESV.exe I don't know why Steam would automatically update with the setting turned off. That's literally the only thing it's useful for, so it would be funny if it doesn't even do that.

Installed 11.11a, it signifficantly reduced slowdowns in cities, even in Solitude. No more twenties, I've got 30 at that infamous spot in Solitude. All other cities run at 40-60.

Anyone have experience running this on an i5 and Intel HD 3000?

Game runs perfect on my desktop (i7-920, 6gb DDR3, AMD 6970) but I would like to play on my laptop from time to time.

That embedded Intel is not that good. Run it on minimums and low LOD and shadows first then see if you have room for improvement.

Liquid, could you add this console command to the OP, this will change the day/night cycle and more importantly, the flickering of the moving shadows will be non-existant if set to 1 (which will be 24hrs in-game = 24hrs of playtime).

Set Timescale to XX (Replace XX with number, use 1 for 24hour cycle)

Thanks, I missed this post and had to go looking for it. PM me if it's something important. Sometimes I'm gone for hours and things go by the wayside.

Posted this in the other thread as well. During the main quest line, a lot of PC users are apparently experiencing issues with Esbern. He's not talking during 3 of the quests which in turn means broken quests, doors don't open, events don't continue etc. and I just experienced this myself 20 minutes ago.

Here's the fix;

tl;dw it's basically using the Fallout 3 Mod manager and extracting the Skyrim - VoicesExtra.bsa from Data directory into the Data directory as well, as the game seems to have problems reading this .bsa files and does better with the extracted files.

In case anyone runs onto the same issue at some point during the main quest line.

I got it this morning on my Macbook Pro 13" (bootcamp). It runs well on all settings low 800x600, with a tweaked SkyrimPrefs.ini to turn vsync off (as well as a few other things to make it run better). Also I turned the textures up to medium with almsot no performance hit. Runs about 40 fps most of the time, occasionally dips down to 25... but it's perfectly playable. In short, yes it will run.

I usually play on my desktop which runs this game great even without the Radeon Pro settings, but I'm going to visit my parents for the holidays and was wondering how my laptop would fair playing this with the Radeon Pro settings.

Processor
Intel Core i5-540M processor (2.53GHz, 3MB)

Graphics card
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830m

4GB RAM

I'll be playing on 1920x1080

Which Radeon Pro settings should I be using?

I'm just honestly worried about how loud it is going to be and the amount of heat that is going to be generated when trying to play (HP Envy 15).

Also steam automatically puts all of your saves on the cloud right?

So the Skyrim script extender is out (before the toolkit ;)), and there is already a useful plugin:
http://mod.gib.me/skyrim/skse/container_categorization_1_1.zip

It forces the game to always categorize items in containers and not put them in a flat list.

This worked quite nicely. Where was this plugin posted, and are there announcements of any others being worked on? Maybe we can give a vendor 10 million gold now? *crosses fingers*

I don't think Skyrim supports Steam Cloud. You can use Dropbox and symbolic links though.

I did this with Minecraft and it works perfectly. You just need dropbox installed on each computer, you move your saves into a dropbox folder, then you create symbolic links on each machine so your game looks in the dropbox folder for the saves.

Here is a guide for Minecraft, you can just do the same steps but for the Skyrim save folder instead. (which is found in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves)
