No performance hit. I disabled the frame counter but only after these shots too :/

Well, I deleted my ini and let the game rebuilt it - I swear it wasn't 1,500 lines long before! - but the LEVEL UP thing is still there, even when starting a new game. I'm going to assume it's some Scaleform issue, though I'm not sure it's a common enough issue to get patched any time soon.

Okay, the 'LEVEL UP' thing is a resolution issue. I tried dropping down to 1080p and it went away. Back up to 2160p and it's back on-screen again.

Just discovered another problem, though. I can't get the Favourites menu to pop up.

You sir are the man!

I also downloaded ATI Tray Tools and started using 8x SSAA, don't know if that's what anyone else used but I took 2 more shots.

Again, no frame rate hit. But I also can't tell if anyone else can see any edge AA cause that's enabled via the profile too.

This first shot is either a glitch or lol worthy what the hell kind of shit is this. One rock is nice, the other is N64 mode!

wait, you still have a shadows drawing in correct? I mean only shadows in close proximity are shown and the the ones in the distance get drawn in? Atleast that's what happened when I tried lowering the fshadowdistance for sharper shadows.

You mean you want me to check something like a more distant shot?

Gonna try it in another area, back in 10 minutes hopefully.

I'm guessing that's the same an
cient DX9 dll they used as an early fix for New Vegas performance issues. Weren't there a number of issues with using that?

I tried that last night.. it doubled my frame rate.. haven't ran into any issues as yet (6950 2gb)

Any way to implement SSAO? I really don't care about blocky shadows for the dynamic lights, but those seams hurt my eyes.

Mine is on four, but it takes about 20-30% of a core.
That probably just means that windows is re-scheduling the thread across different cores.

In Whiterun, the game never goes over 50-60% cpu usage and I get below 30fps.
See above.

KKRT00 said:
Lol, there is hotkeying in this game!
Of course there is. It actually works really well with spells, since you can easily get to dual-casting a particular spell by hitting its hot key twice.

Just uninstalled the game and going to try a clean install. Don't recall the name. Found it right after encountering the
stray dog
that is following me around. One wolf right at the entrance along with a single body.

If it's blue and icy inside then that's it. There's a wolf next to a body and then another wolf round the corner. The game would always crash for me when you round the corner and the next wolf loads.

edit: It's a known issue apparently. The game crashes when the Icewolf appears. The solution is to run the game in windowed mode just for that bit.

Yeah, I think the first time the SSAA I got FR's in the teens. Was not working so I went back to MSAA and FR is normal. Corky shadows aren't drawn from far. I have to tweak that in the ini in a sec then I'm off to take some shots. It has like a ring around me like the detection is low. So when I move across I see this circle around me that renders the shadows there, weird.

I don't think changing the shadow resolution to 8192 does anything. I tried comparing them but don't see much of a difference. I've gotten the shadows to stop shimmering by implementing just the shadow distance tweak.

Also through testing I've come to the conclusion that increasing faudiomastervolume doesn't do shit.

I can confirm that, going above 4096 doesn't seem to make a difference. My settings now are 4096 and distance 2000 interior / 4000 exterior. Outside of a few corner cases I've been really happy with that.

I have a new suggestion for people with good systems that feel like the game should perform better:
If you have more than 8GB of RAM, try disabling your page file.

I fiddled with the lower values of shadow draw distance last night, but ended up setting it back to 8000 as the noticeable side-effect of shadows fading in was too much of a distraction.

Edit: I'm referring to exterior shadows in particular.

I took my interior down just now. I put it up to 8000 and got sporadic jumps from further shadows loading or something. The view distance was far but I'm going back in with it at 1000.

Can anyone tell me what AMD's lag time tends to be on official Crossfire support? For instance, are Rage users still waiting, or did they release a driver update finally?

The performance sucks and there seems to be a huge issue with Crossfire. With Crossfire enabled I get framerates in the teens, I didn't think it'd be worse even if it's not supported. Even with it running on single 6970 it randomly chugs even when looking at rock faces and walls. This is also on a stock 2600K with 16 GB of RAM. I don't understand.

Lower values for interiors are fine since the larger areas (i.e. dungeons) are primarily composed of twists and turns, and even the more open subsections peppered along these paths aren't particularly long or wide.

For a complete noob, how do I do this and what can I expect with 12gb of ram?

That shadow fix doesn't increase the resolution of those occasional pitiful light-sourced shadows, does it? The fire pit in my Whiterun house is a joke.

Sutton Dagger said:
As some people are claiming a 30-60% CPU usage, can we expect a patch to utilise the CPU better and thus get an increase in frames by like 1/3?
As I said above, I think it's pretty likely that the game is actually mostly single threaded and people are seeing ~30% across multiple cores because Windows is rescheduling the thread. (Yeah, it sometimes does that, I have no idea why, it certainly isn't very cache friendly)

Alright, I'm still getting just a couple of random dips which seem to be due to be like more map or shadows are loading but these settings here render the shadows further and when I don't get the weird drop, the game is as it was before, frame rate wise.

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1
fInteriorShadowDistance=8000.0000
fShadowDistance=6000.0000

tesv2011-11-1315-12-3xt89r.png

Notice the difference in the first shot with the tree's not loading but I moved up another 10 feet or so and then you can see the shadows come into view. I personally would not suggest tinkering any farther as the dips are more frequent. I may have to go lower on the shadowdistance but as I said, the drops were less frequent and my FR was as it was before. I want to go back and tinker more as I want to see if the odd drops can be stopped.

so guys this is my prefs file is there anything wrong with it....
Also I have a i5 2.7 R5870 8gb... not one crash but I still get popin a little ... but anything else I could change or is it ok.

aslo two bugs that are driving me crazy... is I changed my shout to X so if I want to drop an item I have to change it back to RB..... I like sprint on RB..

And the fov Is there a fix or does it just reset everytime you load... I have to type fov 90 alot... :(

Basically, with 12 GB you shouldn't have a page file period (even disregarding Skyrim). What you can expect is less disk use, and much faster switching between applications that you haven't opened for a while.
Regarding Skyrim specifically, I don't know if it will help, it's just one thing that came to my mind when thinking about how my configuration could differ from that of people having problems.

As for how to change it:
pagefile40c80.png

Just set it to "none" for all drives, and ignore Windows warning you. (Also ignore my insane volume names)

I'm partially responsible for it getting there in the first place, but I confirmed that it doesn't work 20 or so pages back. Please remove it from the OP!

I fixed the problem with the 'LEVEL UP' label. You can just delete the string from the interface localisation file. Removes it from other instances but still worth it.

The problem with not being able to open the favourites menu was me being a dumbass.

Now the game crashes whenever I try and open the map!

I skimmed through it again and removed. I just basically reshuffled and knew it was there but missed it. I did edit out the one I have in the tips section but missed yours as I've been doing tons of editing and research. It's fixed now though so thanks to the one who found it!

And whats Your iShadowMapResolution ? Because changing those 3 variables only changes shadow distance and dont change resolution at all [secondary and primary dont work] as i described here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=32659646&postcount=2013

This setting is awesome if You dont care about 'distant' shadows, because proximity is very low for 1000.

Ok, I went back in and used these settings

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1
fInteriorShadowDistance=8000.0000
fShadowDistance=5000.0000
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096
iShadowSplitCount=2

No more stutters and shadows render decently far but not into the horizon so I hope some aren't looking for that level. GPU usage is at 99% now with these settings too btw. It was at 50% before any tweaking.

2500k@4.5
6970@950/1450
8GB RAM
W7x64

This one will go in the OP.

I will check interiors in a second. Sorry, I was totally focused on outside areas as we were originally talking about that earlier on the page.

Wazzim said:
Looking at those screenshots the original seems much better. It only seems to increase the depth of the normal maps which lead to ugly artifacts and an overly "sharp" look.

I think real texture packs will take a bit longer.

Yeah, 5000 should be pretty good, I settled on 4000 for outside now but I think I'll increase it slightly.

I'm gonna check out the interior and do some comparison, should be about 20 minutes I hope, or less.

This may due to my ignorance on PC technicalities but if the game is barely using the power of high performance CPUs/GPUs, why does the FPS dip? Is it the poor optimization? Is it based on NPCs and stuff?
