The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Just wanted to pop in and say that this game runs like a dream 95% of the time on my mid-level, 2008 era rig. I've got everything on high @ 1080p (16x AF, 0 AA) and get locked 60 FPS indoors, 50-60 FPS outdoors, and around 30-40 in most towns.

And that's running on:
AMD Phenom II X2 550 @3.4 ghz
ATI 4850 512 MB
4 GB DDR2

(which could be built nowadays for about $200).

I was all set to build a new rig for this game, but even on high and with no AA, I still think it looks fucking gorgeous. I think I'm set for another year at least.

Good to hear, should run great on the rig I built for my friend then
Intel q9550
Amd 4870
8GB Ram

I was worried he would get sub par performance.

No no no no no no. This does NOT work.

And people who say it sticks after you type it into the console, NO it doesn't. It resets after loading certain areas.

It's weird. I've had it stick plenty of times, but it's also reset *some times* after I went and messed with my ini settings.

Im also using Motionjoy but Im having a problem with my ps3 turning on when I disconnect the controller after playing, Its probably because the controller is paired with the ps3, is there a way around it?
Yes. You have to click Disconnect in the Motioninjoy program. You should hear the USB unplugged noise, and the lights of the DS3/sixaxis should turn off. You can then unplug the controller without your PS3 turning on. You need to remember to do this when shutting down your PC too, even if you're leaving the controller plugged in, it'll try to turn on the PS3.

I get no improvement when testing just outside of Riverwood, looking towards the buildings. 34fps with or without RadeonPro.

Ultra Settings @ 1440x900
5870 1GB
i7 920 @ 3.5GHz
6GB 1333MHz RAM
750GB 7200RPM HDD

Meh, tried this and it crashed/froze my PC entirely within 2 minutes of gameplay. (Has not happened at all before).

Thanks for the thought though!

Did anyone find a solution to the stuttering you get when looking left and right?

Specifically, I'm using the 360 pad and when I uncap my framerate and let it go up to 60 I get annoying stuttering while I'm turning. However, if I cap my framerate at 30fps, which is how I've been playing since launch, I get totally smooth turning.

I get a boost in fps with my 6950 but end up with weird texture glitches.

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/isoku/ScreenShot10.jpg

Walls covered in leaves is one example.

Edit: After playing around with it I realized I still get the fps boost with texturing filtering and mipmap quality unchecked. I then changed anti-aliasing mode to multi-sample and the texture problem is fixed and I still have the fps boost!

What's the verdict on PC.... K&M or 360 Controller?

I also would like to hear peoples opinions on this, would love to get this game, but if theres 1 thing that angers me about PC versions, its fucked up keyboard and mouse controls combined with a crappy UI that doesnt fit them.

So my current PC has a 3.3 GHz Wolfdale CPU and a GeForce 9800 GTX+. I have some money saved up, but the question is how I want to spend.

I'm considering buying a GeForce GTX 590 and recycling my 9800 GTX+ as a physics card. Would this be enough to reach Ultra settings smoothly?

This made things a *little* better for me, but somehow I think with a 5850 and a core 2 oc'd to 3.5ghz, I should be getting better than 20fps on medium

Just by looking at people getting much better framerates on high, with less powerful video cards tells me I'm doing *something* wrong

hated kb/m at first so I switched to controller. It was a welcomed change, however, once I read that you could hotkey your spells/weapons to the keyboard and once I got a little more familiar with the menu system I switched back to kb/m and have loved it ever since (even better then the controller)! So to sum it up, both work well so just play with whichever one you prefer.

If you're playing a class that switches between skills a lot, keyboard for certain. I've played both ways for a few hours and my mage was a lot more annoying on a pad.

Just make sure you're using hotkeys. And it might be a good idea to switch the mouse bindings so left-clicking uses the skill in your left hand.

Mouse and keyboard work fine for me with D3DOverrider and turning off mouse acceleration. I like the option of 1-9 hotkeys, though early on some people have had a glitch where hotkeys get unbound.

Did you use any of the tweaks in the OP? I have stuff set to medium/high, with 4xMSAA, and I usually get 40-60 fps, maybe 25-30 fps in Whiterun. I didn't use many tweaks at all, mostly input stuff.

I have a 5850 and e8400 (core 2 duo 3.0 Ghz).

That's the next thing on my list to mess with.

What resolution are you running at?

Just got this with Newegg credit.

I'm installing now, but what would I expect with the following setup;

Radeon 6870
Phenom II X4 965
4.GB RAM
Windows Vista 32-bit

1680x1050. What changes did you make? I have 4xMSAA, FXAA off, everything medium besides high textures and I think ultra decals. Shadows are low or medium, I -think- medium.

Make sure you close external programs. I also turned off the Steam community overlay for Skyrim.

Can you guys upping your FOV confirm that if you switch to weilding a bow, your entire left shoulder sticks out an ungodly amount in the lower left corner of the screen? I had to put the fov back down to 65 as it was so distracting. Wondering if it's just me. This is at 1920 x 1080.

I have same GPU and similiar CPU as you(I got a 955) and performance is terrible. But then again performance seems different for everybody regardless of what type of setup they have.

:/

Strange, I get stuttering when I cap at 30, but it runs smooth at 60. It happens to me in most games though, perhaps something is wrong with my graphics card?

Didn't muck around in the ini's (yet)

Tried all those settings, turned off 2nd monitor, all other running programs, and that got me at least above 30fps outdoors (just barely), and I could at least turn around without the framerate shitting the bed.

So that's progress!

(I should probably mention this system currently has 2GB of ram cause one of my chips is being RMA'd at the moment, not sure how much that changes performance)

Just bought the game, but right now i'm only concerned about improving mouse sensitivity, but i dont see anything in the control options of the game??

I'm sorry for asking but I've never heard of Large Adress Aware. I'm on W7 x64, is this app only or more recommended to 32bits users?

But... it does? Sorry it doesn't work for you, but it works fine for me...
If you've entered it via console and saved that probably did more for keeping the fov than the ini change.

I never even touched the console command.

Hell, I've yet to open the console at all outside of using tm once just to try it.

Did anyone try this Crossfire fix yet? It seems pretty innocuous. I think it is a DLL from a prerelease ATi driver package. I would try it myself but I'm stuck at work.

OK, I tried this out, and it WORKS. My Crossfire seems to damn near fully scale with this simple patch. Open areas, dungeons, everything just whips around and is smooth as butter. Still not entirely sure of the source of this, but I'll take it until AMD gets their shit together! My 6870s are pumping out mad frames with this hoss. Didn't have time to FRAPs it though; if somebody else could do the honors, that would be sweet.

No, it's actually targeted at x64 users, whose operating systems are actually capable of accessing all of their memory in the first place.

Just wanted to post that BoobPhysics method of forcing AF settings, etc through RadeonPro worked quite nicely, and I got a nice little bump both indoors/outdoors. Also read on the official forums later that there may be issues using the in-game settings for these things, which is what I'm assuming the method overrides.

Also, the more I play the more I am BAFFLED by the shitty UI decisions made by the team. The placement of things, having deep menus, buttons not always registering, etc etc. I really really hope it gets modified heavily with mods (yay!) - I'd love to see a return to Oblivion style, especially being able to see my character (lots of work I assume).

Well I can't believe we've had 50 pages of people saying it doesn't work, finally got LiquidMetal to remove it from the OP, and you're still saying that it works. You must be the only person in the world who has it working. Or... you think that it's working, but it's not. Sorry to be skeptical, but nobody has got that ini command to work. I would like some proof... maybe you could make a video with a new game that starts immediately with a massive FOV, without having to bring up the console? Pretty please?

At the top of the city looking down at the buildings

The RP settings did not help.

Low Settings: 13fps
High Settings : 6fps
Maxed Settings: 5fps

..................$60 well spent.........

GPU: AMD Radeon 6870
CPU AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.4ghz
Ram: 4GB
OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
Fun: Not having any

If I weren't in class and I cared enough to do all that instead of actually playing the game I'd say sure, but I think you're being a little hostile.

Something's not right. I'm running:

HD6850
Athlon II X4 3Ghz
12GB RAM

Other than RAM you're a touch better than I am and yet I'm just trying to get stuff to stay out of the 30's. I'm averaging mid 30's to 60 frames everywhere I go with High Settings and a little tweaking to the shadows. You should be getting much better than that.

Yep. I even had the profile to start the exe. I'll terminate CCC.exe and start up RP again and try it once more.

Skeptical. Not hostile. Believe me, I want it to be true. I'm totally cheesed off with my FOV randomly resetting in the middle of sessions, as is everyone else. If you could demonstrate your settings, you'd be doing the whole community a favour.
