The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Wrong settting.

If your HDTV/monitor supports 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, go to Adjust Desktop color settings in Nvidia Control Panel, change Digital Color Format from RGB to YCbCr 444.

Here's mine for example:

Maybe it's because the game has hardly any underwater stuff? I've spent maybe 3 minutes underwater, and 2 of those mins were spent getting raped by slaughterfish.

What driver version are you using? I have never seen these settings before.

Doing that doesn't fit my play style unfortunately.

I wish it was region locked like New Vegas.

Just my preference of course, I don't dock the game too much for it.

I feel like that argument misses the point of a TES game. I can only speak to Morrowind and newer, but the greatness of these games is that they throw you into a world, without any hand holding, and let you create the story of your character. A big part of the game, especially for me, is exploring the world and finding a scary new place where the enemies are just super powerful and imagining what awesome stuff they could be guarding, and having to put it on the back burner until I'm powerful enough. The sense of accomplishment is really great when you can come back to that area that was out of the question before, and totally F stuff up.

If they locked you out of areas, it just wouldn't feel like a TES game.

I just checked it out... the water kind of flickers, but only when in 3rd person mode. After moving the camera around a bit it stops. I didn't notice this before the mod.

Hmm, you know what dude, it kind of does it without the mod installed as well. This is around Riverwood. It looks like the reflections on the water are just flickering, and then it stops.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Water surface flickering? I get it too once in a while and I have no idea what causes it.

Same here... how interesting. Im very curious why you have those options when most others dont.

It might only show up for displays detected as being TVs.
I just changed it for my TV.

Well I'll be, Good job nvidia. Removed the EDID fix and reinstalled the drivers and up pops that options. I wonder when they officially added it in.

Uhhhh WTF yall I turned off FXAA and it's running twice as well. I thought it wasn't supposed to hurt performance much? Can't believe I could have been playing like this all this time.

I think I noticed a pretty substantial hit from it too, and it really appeared more fuzzy than it should have. I'd rather just use 2x AA or none at all than what I saw when trying out FXAA.

I'm only getting like 1-2 fps hit. Are you guys using post sharpen or something?

I've read the OP, but I'm not clear about something. The LAA/4GB fix. Do I still need to change something in my ini files when I apply the fix? I only have 4 gigs of RAM so I'm not sure. Would just applying the fix be enough?

Same here, sounds like the guys are using some obscure setting that I'm not.
Just the game's normal settings. But it does really look way better without it, too. I don't even know if I would call the FXAA blurring rather than dampening.

My bad, thought you were talking about FXAA injector, not that shitty FXAA setting.

I'm getting some weird transparent textures on trolls and cattle. I think I saw a fix somewhere before I got the game, but didn't see it in the OP when I checked recently. Did I skim over it or did I see it somewhere else?

Is even 4xMSAA killing some machines or something? I want to go with 4xSSAA but I hit 28 in some spots and I don't really want to go that low so I set RadeonPro to 8xEQMSAA. I get no hit going from 4,8, or 8xEQ so it's the right fit. I really like Adaptive MSAA BUT I get small texture pop in and texture layer issues even though I take not hit going from 8xMSAA and 8xAdaptive MSAA.

I'm not entirely sure what major change outside of tinkering with AA there is for that. I get them too but it's all dependant on which type of AA I'm using.

This game is definitely not designed around chars using enchanting, alchemy and smithing together.

Here's what i have crafted with alchemy on 60, smithing on 80 and enchanting on 80.

Actually with smithing on 60, alchemy on 40 and enchanting on 50 You can easy enhance low level items that will pwn everything in the world.
How'd you get the base damage so high? On Legendary I can only get my glass sword to do 78 damage and that's with the smithing perk and smithing at 100.

Also hurray for the inventory sorting mod, all I want is equipped items on top now =D

Enchant a set of equipment with fortify smithing and take blacksmith potions. I actually like that you can boost low level stuff to be viable through out the game. It gives you more options and I like the look of lower level armor.

Anyone using a no weight mod? Don't know if there's a preferred one.

I like how they go for (semi) realism with the limit but you can carry dozens of potions, books, crystals, and junk ><

Anyone had there performance turn to shit after entering and exiting forts reguarly ? Ive had it happen in 2 forts ive been clearing out recently, i would be going in and out of the fort / skyrim, and when at some point when i come out of the fort back into Skyrim, the performance turns to shit (<10 FPS), which i can only sort out by restarting the game.

Exact problem I am having

Sounds like you need the LAA patch.
Don't know what could be causing that besides a lack of access to RAM.

What? How?

No idea. I was pretty surprised too. I'll have to double check.

I don't have too many mods but the ones I have I love. The best are the enhanced sky, glowing ores and faster horse. Lots of good ones though.

edit: I messed up. I accidentally counted official Skyrim files. I don't even have 1GB of mods which I guess is good.

Use the console command and set it to however much you want!

I overlooked that one. I'm gonna be honest, I only started using the console yesterday. I will use that one right away though.

So far I've only used the fov switch and nothing else. I haven't even fast traveled yet about 20 hours in ><

Just trying to play clean and I did this in The Witcher 2 but no other "cheats". I will definitely be increasing it to about 1000 when I get to it today.

I was sure my accidental increase to a carrying capacity of 1300 would suffice, but I soon found myself gradually increasing the value every time I became overburdened while in the middle of nowhere... and now:

In regard to fast travelling, I only use it to travel between areas I've explored thoroughly. Otherwise, I hike, as there's a certain beauty to stumbling upon new areas such as ruins and caves.

There are 13 Guardian stones around the map. The Steed one adds +100 to carry weight and makes heavy armor weigh nothing. Doubly nice for you warrior types.
Yeah, definitely haven't ran into them yet nor have I looked at a map to cheat my way to them yet but I would rather do it legit. I will into it later.

Dude wtf do you have in your inventory? :lol

Doing the Septimus (and main quest?) quest where you enter the dwemer ruins to Blackreach. Just after enting the Dwemer ruins, I get a persistent CTD at an early point along the glacial cave. Any ideas as how to avoid it?
It's my first CTD experience outside of when I was experimenting with tweaks.

e: bypassed the problem area with noclip

Dude wtf do you have in your inventory? :lol

I haven't sold anything for a little while now, but even my idle carry weight is in the 2000 ballpark; presumably because I haven't sold a single book, item of food, ingredient, or potion since I began playing. :p

OK, there is something wrong with the character movement in this game. It's driving me crazy.

Basically, there is now a rather annoying choppiness to all character movement regardless of framerate. If I'm getting a perfect 60 fps it should be smooth, but it's not. When looking down and walking around there is a jerkiness in the movement reminiscent of a lower framerate. Obviously, when slowdown DOES occur, this movement becomes much jerkier.

What's odd is that this problem wasn't really apparent when I first had the game, but in the past week this has become a problem that has prevented me from enjoying it as the game NEVER looks smooth even when the framerate is perfect.

What exactly is going on here? Is there a fix? Did the patch break something? I'd love to see this resolved but it's not really an easy thing to communicate.

Drove me crazy too, but I implemented the FPS limiter to 45fps and now I don't get that anymore. Oddly enough the mod is "under review" at Skyrim Nexus for some reason.

Hey, is there a way for us already-patched Skyrim peeps to get the LAA patch still?

When Im using the injector my FPS completely crash. I thought there wasn't supposed to be a performance hit? I'm using preset 4 by the way.

Dude, I'm at 10000 now :lol I could sell a shitton of stuff I'm just lazy to do it and I always say "Hmm maybe I'll need it later on". I never do.

I sell weapons, apparel, and some misc. items (e.g. plates and such), but literally nothing else. When I'm done with the game I'll have to remember to empty my entire inventory while inside my house and see how much of the space I can fill. :p
