The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I installed the HD texture pack but its quite disappointing at this stage. Mostly I notice the "improved" rocks. I am not sure I like them though.

It looks awful from the screens I've seen.

Really ugly, different from the original and over sharpened. Lots of textures look like complete crap.

Damn... took me ages to make that post.

Do you want me to remove it?

Heck no. It's well done. In truth, there aren't even 10 mods worth truly gawking over yet. That's why I was holding off on a similar post. It will happen at some point though. If you want to work with me on that, I would not object. This is a bigger task than it seems :P

Why I left it out for this whole time and have the tech still leading the thread :P

Yeah be wary of some of these early texture packs. Vurt's foliage mod is probably the best so far.

Totally agree. I put it in the up and coming or WIP section due to that.

And thank you for testing that Aeana. It seems like the problems are like they say. I'm going to try and find and alternative one.

Nope.

At least not normal modding that I'm aware of.

Yes. The only thing that disables them are the workaround ones that mainly use the dx9 DLL add on or custom launchers. That's why I stayed away from that one Durante posted earlier on inventory management as it said you launch it from it's own custom exe. I was actually going to ask durante about that as I can't find the post so I will have to skim back to find it.

Another neat mod to try is Skyrim-Macrogamer. Taken from the description- Those scripts will auto-play for you and easy the task of skills grinding without using cheats.

This Nexus Mod Manager seems not so good. I'm trying to activate a mod (the crafting meltdown) and it's saying it can't find the .esm for another mod (lost art of blacksmith.) The meltdown mod does not require the lost art mod I don't think. But okay, fine, I try to activate the lost art mod, it says it can't activate because it can't find the .esm for the Meltdown mod.

So I deleted all the mods and then just added Vals Crafting Meltdown. Now it says "A problem occurred during install: Reset action must be initialized with no changed items. Parameter name: action The mod was not installed."

Edit: Since all three of the mods it was having trouble with were single file .esm's, I just put those in myself. I do like having a mod manager for the multi-file texture mods and what not, hope this program gets improved rapidly.

Sadly, I'm heading off to bed and my eyes are too fuzzy to see what is going on, but so far the only thing I've noticed is that I am no longer able to force supersampling.

Edit: Morphological destroys performance (almost 20fps loss) unless I force Oblivion/AFR in Radeonpro. :/

KB&M have terrible implementation in Skyrim, it's much better to play with a pad. Also, I play in 3rd person, so don't need uber 180-degrees turns.

true I forgot that the developers gimped the PC feel for Skyrim as I have yet to play it, still waiting for those oh-so-good PC mods.

I don't even understand why we need a mod to fix the mouse in menu issue, a cost cutting measure more than laziness I presume but for a series that is so PC central it is really annoying that I have to wait for some guy in his free time to make a mod rather than play the game it should be right out the box.

I had the same issue. That is, after about 72840608639 crashes just trying to download them. I decided to do things manually.

The newer patch actually took away all program breaking crashes. I still get an error rarely but the program doesn't shut down like it did before. And every DL has started successfully on the first try. Still, there is room for improvement and it's too early to cast it aside.

So tonight I was overclocking my i7 2600k for the first time, wanting to get some extra fps out of skyrim after all the new mods... and I kept noticing my temps hitting 96c after running some prime 95 stress test!!!! And the CPU was throttling it self wayyy down to keep it self alive. Keep in mind I built this rig about 4 months ago and havnt actually taken the time to watch my temps at all....

Needless to say I knew something was f-d up, so I did things like under clocking it, disable hyperthreading, updating the motherboard bios (in case of a temp misreading). I looked at the Heatsink to make sure it was tightened tight on (aftermarket Dark Knight HSF).

Kept scratching my head, so finally i got fed up and desided to tear apart the whole rig.... and guess what I found still attached the bottom of my heatsink...

Yup... I never removed the protective thick plastic sticker from the bottom of the heat sink... Sometimes my stupidity astounds me.

Now that its all back assembled, I have her running at 4.7ghz, at 65degrees after an hour of stress testing.

A true testament to this i7, its basically been running with no HSF for the last few months and still been playing games and running at stock speed without much of a problem! Amazing. Not only that, Skyrim truely is CPU bound, The game is running silky smooth now.[/QUOTE]

Not laughing at you, just laughing with you. That sounds like something I'd do. I'm actually about to start doing the same thing (overclocking my CPU for Skyrim)

Liking that noise, really looks pimp and makes the game look like there's detail far off (even though it won't show up normally).

Nexus Mod Manager keeps launching with the normal Skyrim.exe which autodetects my setup and erases my ini files. How do I prevent this?

Yah, it was constantly crashing on me as well.

I just downloaded it this morning and it was crashing constantly, sometimes when downloading and sometimes when not. I hope someone is working on a better version like oblivion mod manager or the fallout one.

You guys should try that. Only downside is that it doesn't tell you when updates are out. Zero crashes though and great sorting. No files even touch the Skyrim install folder.

Yeah it helps a lot, no more polished plains. Aesthetic balance is very important.

has anyone had the problem that no matter what AA setting you choose (except for FXAA) the load screens/title screen dont seem to recieve any AA? The actuall game is beautiful and jaggie free, but the load screens are a jagged nightmare

So my excessively loud, yet reliable 8800GT has finally choked on this game. It can run the game fine, but once in a while I get artifacts and my 8800GT overheats like crazy.

My furmark score: http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/furmark_score_190.php?id=11581

Basically it's time for me to get a new graphics card, but I've been out of the loop since the 4870 days. Any recommendations for a mid-range card which is also quiet? I'm not looking to spend a lot though. My PC is nearly 5 years old and last thing I want to do is continually upgrade on an out of date motherboard. CPU is an e6750 OC'd at 3.3 Ghz.

My GTX560 (non-Ti, with the stock fan) is pretty quiet despite being overclocked to 915mhz. It pairs well with my e7200@3.5ghz and replaced a much noisier 8800GT.

Skyrim runs happily at 30-60fps on mostly Ultra settings (shadows on high, decals on medium, all view distances at maximum, FXAA and 2x AA, tree and terrain shadows on, no other mods) at 1680x1050, settling around 45-60fps outside and 30fps in towns (except that one town on the left of the map where I get under 30 sometimes).

I've had nothing but good experiences all round with the card. It's allowed me to put off hauling my old Core 2 Duo system into the modern age and will probably do so for a while yet.

You've reminded me of playing Episode 2 on a 7900GT with the case off and a desk fan pointed right at it, trying to play for as long as possible before everything went bananas.

Just uploaded a video (off-screen) of the random bit of the outside world I'm in now so you can see how it runs. PM me if there's any other games you're interested in; if I've got them I'll let you know how they run.

Anyone else have a problem where if they load a save game the frame rate halves? If they load a save game again it halves again??

And is there STILL no Crossfire support?

I'm sick of playing the game at 30fps or less at 1080p there is no excuse for this.

Yeah, just confirming what others have already said, but this game really benefits from higher CPU speeds. I finally overclocked my 2500k to 4.2ghz and I'm seeing quite a decent improvement in performance.

Nope, have not seen this.

Post 5256 above you (same page...)

If you are getting sub 30fps you may want to redirect some (read: all) of that blame at your processor.

The same CPU that is likely monster overclocked like mine and doesn't even use but about 44% of it. AMD needs to fix the CF scaling like last week.

Holy crap..

Just did the ini tweaks in the OP and some tweaks from the geforce guide and the game looks jaw dropping. The ambient occlusion is HUGE. Sadly it makes the game too laggy (factory OC 580 and 3.2 CPU).

This isn't my picture but:

I thought that was on by default? Interesting.

The QD inventory mod is pretty awesome, but it keeps breaking for me. While in enchanting/smithing menus the item I highlight to craft/disenchant/enchant/etc. is not the item that shows up in the preview pane. And if I select it it is the item in the window pane that actually gets selected, not the item I highlighted.

So it's rather unuseable at the moment, but I hope he gets it fixed because I love being able to sort by weight, see lots of items at once, etc.
