The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Thanks. Are you using the blue one or the colour one?

Default. The colorful one wasn't available when I installed so maybe I should try it out.

Cheers. I'll try both out and see which one I like. That is when skyrimnexus is working again. It won't let me download anything at the moment. Gets to the server select screen for a split second and then that turns blank.

Let us know which one you prefer. :)

Yeah, the servers are getting hammered. Nexus site news two days ago:

The Nexus sites alone are pushing over 600mbit/second at the moment. The file servers are pushing 1Gbit. So put the two together and the network is pushing some 1.6Gbits of traffic a second (that's 205 Megabytes of bandwidth a second)

AO can be jaw dropping and awful.

Everything under water looks like dog crap but some of the areas are movie quality.

This game is SOOO good that I feel like it's unfair to make games THIS good because you know, other games might get seriously jealous :p

The cities are WONDERFUL and the side quests are FANTASTIC, I just have no idea how they can come with this large amounts of HQ SQ !

Yea, that's all old and busted. I'll try and compile everything and update it.

Edit: Here you go...

Test Area Shot (Water, Mountains, Distance Details, uGrids, Shadows, etc): http://h11.abload.de/img/tesv2011-11-2718-25-0rqjke.png

SkyrimPrefs.ini: http://pastebin.com/fPXJu7v1
Skyrim.ini: http://pastebin.com/KkAjNGZB

In the end I turned on FXAA as there was too much sharpening from all the AA. With the HQ AF the blur was lessened and it came out just about right. Still can't do anything about those shitty shadowing crawls on some surfaces, however.

Thanks man. I'm bascially copying you as your settings work out quite well for me :)

For now, I'm resisting the urges to do any mods as I want to play with artistic direction intended by the developer. However the ini's changes (from what I can tell) just enhance the experience already there vs modifying the art style and direction.

Major props to everyone contributing in this thread. Community interaction like this really overshadows the challenges presented sometimes with modifying PC games.

Every time I install the new AMD drivers it causes Skyrim to crash to a white screen after 2=5 minutes of play.

Pretty lame considering the whole reason I installed them was for Skyrim...

Everything else is stable as hell.

Anyone else having this issue? Time to roll back again...

Thanks for the shots Marsi.

Vanilla looks like crap but the other two look fairly equal. Might have to try out the HLP one.

Start by turning down shadows and general LOD settings and terrain map distances. If you're really struggling, turn down shadow res to 2048 (default is 4096). Exterior shadow distance to 2000 and shadow filter to 2. Consider also turning off tree shadows and land shadows. It's compromises but you gotta do what you gotta do.

You see, I don't think it about compromise... that Laptop can run Crysis 2 with everything on Ultra and DX11 and has a better framerate than Skyrim on low.
Like I said a Pc with just a GTX 260 and 3GB of DDR2 RAM runs better than a GTX560M with 8GB of DDR3 RAM... its not normal!

The rings, or whatever you want to call them, that form the skybox are much more evident in the HLP sky it seems

I downloaded that improved night sky mod but every night I haven't been able to get a great look at them because of the clouds. Maybe it's because I don't play much at night and don't pay attention to the sky but there seems to be a lot of clouds.

Welp I fixed it... apparently all I had to do was to put "high performance" on the control panel.

Had to turn off SSAO again. Looks great in screenshots but whenever you move, it flickers or pulses in some way, hard to explain - Looks horrific. Think I'll stay vanilla until a better solution appears.

Anyone have a solution for this?

I have the hardware to run high quality AO but that flickering is just hideous.

It was flickering in that fashion for me when I tested it on Performance. Bumped it up to Quality and it was fine. I imagine High Quality is also solid.

Using Fallout 3 Compatibility.

Anyone here with a GTX 590 ? What framerate are you getting, and which settings / mods are you using ? I'm thinking of upgrading from crossfire 6870.

I absolutely hate AMD.

Im using the Oblivion setting, set on Quality, and get no flickering. If its set to performance I get massive flickering. What settings are you using in Nvidia Inspector?

Looks like I had it just set to Quality. Going to High Quality fixed it.

It would appear I do NOT have the hardware to handle it though. Ridiculous how much of a performance hit AO is. Went back to Riverwood and was running at like 30fps. Which would normally be alright for me, being raised as a console peasant and all, but in this game 30fps means stuttering all over the place.

I advise against getting a 590: it gets no love from NVIDIA and its performance does not correspond with its make-up, that being two 580s smushed together. Instead, go for 2 580s or 570s. And if you're really wanting the best try to get 3GB 580s (wish I had some).

I'd really like to see some before and afters of these specific scenes please. with and without AO.

Very brief and unscientific testing of the 11.11b drivers has convinced me that I'm not seeing any kind of performance gain. I really don't want to go back to overclocking my CPU. I never could get it all that stable at anything significantly higher than stock settings before. I think my PSU is just a piece of shit.

The drivers seem to be the same minus the supposed CF stuff which is not working for everyone it seems.

Did anyone ever decide which preset in the enhanced shader mod is best or do people find the fxaa injector mod better?

I'm getting more and more missing or broke textures, this is a bit silly:

Did you changed "ugridstoload.general" via console? If so, you have to delete the skyrim.ini and then add your actual value for ugridstoload in the skyrim.ini again.

When you change the value via console the skyrim.ini (not the skyrimprefs.ini) will blow up with useless commands thus creating those red textures on the loading screen and so on.

No I changed ugrids in skyrim.ini. It only happened once on the menu screen but I got it a lot in other places before I changed it.

So if I just wanted a mod that adds points and lets me level instantly, can anyone point me to something like that? Yeah, asking for cheat codes basically. I'd like to run around with a level 50 caster, while maintaining the awesomeness of my legit melee dude. Just don't have time for both.
