Newtype was always my choice for magazine because it had news on both Japanese games and anime.

GAMEFAN needs to jump on something like this. Might be a little awkward with the recent Nick Rox accusations, but I would pledge day one for sure. Bitches still owe me a cap!

One of the authors behind this one is the dude that used to be Shidoshi at Gamefan, so... I wouldn't be surprised if we saw something similar for that, especially given how well this campaign is doing.

Read it religiously back in the day and my fave of all the gaming mags (also read Gamefan, GamePro, OPM etc), still the best review system with originally 4 members reviewing a game (later turned to 3) so you get multiple perspectives. Shout-out to the homie Sushi-X, if you know you know.
When i see EGM, Sushi-X is the first thing that comes to mind. I was always an EGM fan while my friend was a GameFan fan.

TIL that Nick Rox is a pedo and his dad was Murdoc in MacGyver? wtf?

Okay, somehow, that doesn't surprise me. I remember on that podcast he was on way back (Warning A Huge Podcast), there was one episode towards the end of it where he came out as being a furry and went on this long exploration of fursonas and other weird shit. So... yeah. Anyone coulda seen that coming.

I know he mentioned his dad was in a rock band at some point or something, so that's kinda cool.

I completely lost track of the guy past GameFan in the 90s so I didn't know him beyond a street fighter cartoon avatar in the magazine. I thankfully had never even heard of furries at that point in my life. Ahhh to go back to those good old days...

I would pledge to even kickstart a Gamefan campaign, pledge the max amount to get everything and pledge again to push it across the finish line. I loved EGM but I was the ‘DIE HARD’ sycophant for Gamefan.
And yes, EGM had an obvious Anti Sega thing going in the Genesis era. While I owned both, I was a Sega kid and I appreciated Gamefans appreciation for the platform.
They were responsible for my buying SO many PSX and Saturn imports.

A neat idea but I would like to see compendiums released of the actual issues.
Comicbooks release tons of compendium volumes per series - the same could happen for gaming magazines.

Of all of the video game magazines, Electronic Gaming Monthly (and EGM2) was by far the best I've read over the years. Always loved the insight from Dan Hsu and Sushi-X. I had no hesitation backing this.

this but i think its just to much work.
You're probably right - but maybe one day.
When I first read this thread's title - thats the first thing that popped into my head. Something I never even thought before - and if comicbook compendiums sell so well to allow even the most obscure titles to see print - gaming magazines could work.

The amount of support that we've seen today for both this project and EGM as a whole has really blown us away. It’s always a little terrifying when you finally reveal to the world something that you’ve been working hard on, so to now see so many of you as excited to check out The EGM Compendium and its companion digital archive as we are to be bringing them to you is incredibly heartwarming.

And, speaking of being blown away, we’ve blown through another three stretch goals!

• Everyone who backs a physical copy of the book will now receive a set of eight exclusive bookmarks honoring some of the most iconic games to ever be judged by the EGM Review Crew. We think we’ve picked some great games to help mark your book (in a non-destructive way), and we’ll be giving you a sneak peek at what they look like very soon.
• Another set of extra pages are being added to The EGM Compendium, this time focusing on the weird and wild world of licensed games that appeared in the pages of EGM during its run. And, for some extra fun, you—yes, you—will get to vote on which brands we cover. You could have us talk about those shining examples of licensed games that broke out beyond expectations, or you could torture us by making us cover some of the worst shovelware to sneak into the magazine.
• And then, if giving our backers one chance to decide the fate of an additional section of the book wasn’t enough, we’ll now be adding a second Backer’s Choice block of extra pages focused on some of the most-covered gaming franchises to appear throughout EGM’s lifespan We ourselves have picked 10 non-licensed franchises to make the initial cut, but it’ll be up to you to decide what gets included from there. We’re just going to say it: This could be the most important vote you cast this year.

As we move into the evening of our first day, we can’t thank you enough for the support you’ve shown toward The EGM Compendium so far. There’s still many more days ahead and a lot more we’ve got planned for this project, so keep checking back for future updates, and help us spread the word to anyone you think might be interested. We couldn’t do this without you.

We're pretty much speechless at this point, and certainly running out of fun new ways to say thank you. But thank you. Again.

Before we launched, we figured, if we were really lucky, we might hit the six-digit milestone toward the end of the campaign. We got there in about 10 hours. We don't want to jinx anything, so we'll just say that big, exciting things that felt like pipe dreams might not be so pipe-dreamy anymore.

With this latest stretch goal unlocked, we'll be expanding the Digital Archive issue with even more content from the EGM Cinematic Universe™ (ECU™), with the 49 issues of EGM² being the single biggest addition. Worlds will collide.

Keep spreading the word, but if you'll excuse us, we're going to log off for the night, get some rest, see if our families remember what our faces look like, etc. We'll be back with more updates tomorrow morning—including the reveal of that final secret stretch goal, if you manage to unlock it while we're away. Plus, we've got even more exciting things lined up to share with you this week.

Did we say thank you?

Over a $100,000 but hopefully they have the book mostly done and just need to get a printer to publish.

So, the $75 version says it includes the 'digital archive' but right below that particular version (with four items) it lists the $10 'digital archive' as an add on. Is that something different? Does the $75 one include the whole digital archive?

Kickstarter over $140k now

EDIT: Based on the developers comments, it does include the digital content.

Thanks for pointing this out OP.

Will back soon!

P.S. What's with the Sushi X tier being only 12 openings? Of course they're sold out. Seems a bit weird and only comes across
as a special "VIP" club type tier.

Anyways, welcome back EGM(kinda). :messenger_heart:

I still have like the first 70ish issues in pretty mint condition…. well, except the StarFox issue got fucked up somehow.
I used to love reading the tech articles….

It’s how I learned about the SNES CD. It took up a few pages and the diagrams they were showing and the whole thing about the CD caddie..

I backed it. It's at 162k now and keeps unlocking stretch goals....and keep adding more pages and adding EGM2 to the digital archive too.

EGM2 getting added in is cool. I never got to read that one back in the day, but I'd always wanted to. Making up for lost time, I guess.

I had basically every EGM mag from 1996 to 2001 that archive is going to really be awesome
getting a 300 or so page TOMB of gaming goodness every month was amazing!

Those names took me back! Me and my friends spent so much time on seanbabys legendary website
mostly because of the camgirl section lol the internet/world was so different back then feels like a different reality
some of the camgirls from that era are very famous now if people only knew lol

Hopefully the EGM2 archive includes the Expert Gamer years I had every single issue.
As good as EGM was EGM2/XG was even better.

They mentioned adding EGM2 issues in the digital archive. Any other magazines titles being added?

No, but it does say EGM2 "and more" so there's always potential. I'm not sure how the licensing works. They could go into OPM, and EGM2 never really went away, it just converted into "Expert Gamer" so maybe that's possible.

Goal crushed:

When we were planning this Kickstarter, our goal was to not only deliver a detailed history of video games as seen through the lens of EGM, but also to create an archive to preserve and protect the legacy of the magazine. We thought it would also be exciting to create a stretch goal that, while likely unattainable, would give us something to push for in the home stretch. Creating a brand new issue of EGM was that goal.

Little did we know that EGM fans like you would be so generous and supportive of this campaign that in under three days this goal would become a reality.

In 2025 a new issue of EGM will be in your hands.

We want to thank each and every backer. We also want to thank each and every person who helped build the EGM legacy over the past 36 years: the editors, the art directors, the illustrators, the interns, the contributors, the production staff, and anyone we forgot. Whether you knew their names or not, they're the ones who made you a fan in the first place.

We're not going to get ahead of ourselves. We're committed to finishing up The EGM Compendium and the Digital Archive before we even start work on EGM #265. And we're going to make sure the book and archive are the best they can possibly be.

But let's be real: Of course we're already thinking about all the exciting things we could do with this new issue. We bet you are too.

Just because we've unlocked the last of our initial stretch goals, that doesn't mean this campaign is over, either. Ever since we blew past our funding target, we've been brainstorming ideas for new stretch goals that might be worthy of pushing the campaign past the monumental achievement of bringing EGM back to life.

We think we've found another big idea that's just as cool and just as ambitious as a new issue of EGM. But we got here so much quicker than we ever expected, so we'll need a bit more time before we're ready to share more. Until then, just know that all our energy will go toward making this project—the book, the archive, and issue #265—that much better.

We can't thank you enough, but we're sure going to keep trying.

The magazines I had as a kid were Gamepro and PC Gamer but I backed it anyway. I remember reading through game walkthroughs (Resident Evil 1 was one of them) while not even having that game. This was apparently a thing that was worth doing to my dumbass kid brain.

Oh, I would lose my damn mind if they included OPM in there... but I can't see it happening. Between EGM2 and Expert Gamer, that's a lot of content, though. And they'll include the buyers guides and that fun stuff.

Like, I know that most of this is already scanned and on Retromags, but a high-effort approach to this just makes me happy. To me, that's absolutely worth throwing money at.

I totally forgot about the Buyer’s Guides! Still have one!!

RetroMags does have a lot, but there's a lot missing too and some of the scans are pretty rough.

I never actually bought any of them, but I remember flipping through a few pages back in the day and was always curious. It'll be cool to finally check those out.

It'll also be cool to get back my goddamn EGM #113 issue. I'd mentioned earlier in the thread that I freelanced for 1Up back in the day - well, I did, but the way I got a shot at it as someone with literally no credibility at the time was because Jeremy Parish was looking for a few old issues of EGM and I told him that if he gave me a chance to write a few articles, I'd send him that issue. I did, and he gave me a shot and I never regretted it - honestly, I kind of credit that as my start in the games biz and at some level why I'm doing what I'm doing today. But man, I really miss that magazine. It was the first issue of EGM I ever bought, and was always a favorite.
