Last year's winner was the first time I liked an Eurovision winner song. This year looks to be an even bigger freak fest than usual though, any "good" songs on that list? I don't have the willpower to go through this right now, someone needs to make a sacrifice here.

I don't want to see and laugh at these until the night, but the UK entry is just nothing. It's got no chance.

Cyprus, Femme Fatale

I know. Its not even laughably bad. Its just... meh.

It's the best song we've entered in a long time. :D

Edit: In its favour, it does feature a stereotypical fat, obscenely cheerful, black bassist.

It seems that Russia wants to win this thing again... This year they hired Timbaland to produce their entry: Believe by Dima Bilan.

Latvia

I am so glad Italy dosent participate but sad Ireland do.

At least we are going to win with Dustin, always enjoyed him on the Den.

Brits have gone from embarrassing "humor" pop to lethally boring shit. That girl band in the competition was better.

After a quick listen through..

...The best song is without a shadow of a doubt France and Sebastian Tellier - Divine. I can count on a few fingers Eurosong entries through history which challenge it.

Other decent tunes: Bosnia and Armenia, to a certain degree. Andorras entry is certainly pompous Eurosong cheese, but in a way that makes you feel good about it.

Russia are always professional about this stuff, desperate to win, but I'm disappointed in this year's copycat-every-pop-ballad-ever choice.

Otherwise the keyword for this year unfortunately seems to be "boring".

My country (Belgium) has a véry original song... Watch it.

I like Switzerland too. And Cyprus. Ireland has something interesting, but unlike last year's Verka Serduchka, who was loved everywhere, Ireland probably won't get many points from the Eastern countries.

Holy shit @ the pirate song and Azerbaijan :lol :lol :lol How the hell can those songs be the best their countries have?

Go Finland!

Which girl band? The shit one, or the other shit one?

Too bad Belgium doesn't have many friends in todays ESC. In 2006 one of the best songs of the competition, Kate Ryan - Je t'adore, didn't even get through the semi-final.

I don't like Dustin the Turkey. They try to get points with humor like Verka Serduchka last year, but unlike Verka they don't have a catchy song to back it all up.

The pirate song reminds me of the German entry from 1979... You might recognize it:

Only difference is that Dschinghis Khan ruled.

You know, it's not even that I like Je t'adore that much, but considering the abominations that got through the semi finals, it really is a disgrace that a decent poppy song (it has eurovision written all over it) doesn't get in the finals.

That's the reason why you should point and laugh at the competition, and enjoy the kitsch and stupidity, cause if you watch it for the musical qualities, it becomes frustrating.

Yeah and although it wouldn't have finished on top, it was a pretty decent song, which at least deserved to be in the finals.

On the other hand, we did get second place totally out of the blue in 2003 with Urban Trad.

oh shit I just looked it up: we lost that year only by 2 points. never knew it was so close

Just listened to the French entry. Man that song's incredible and way too good to end up in a kitschfest like Eurosong :p If this contest was still 'find the best pop song' though, then this would win hands down

Hind (Netherlands) is boring as fuck again. After LORDI and Mrs. President we still haven't figured out that freakshows win the Eurovision.

Yeah, Chikilicuatre for the win jajajaja

I've been following Buenafuente's effort to make it from Japan. Screw Eurovision XD

Doesn't France usually send these very strong songs (musically, not very Eurosongy or kitchy, not a lot of hoopla ) to Eurosong?

I like this one too.

Finland is full of good bands and still we manage send the crappy ones to Eurovision :(.

All those countries are full of good bands, or at least better bands than what they send. It's just that if you're good enough, you're above this contest and want no part in it.

the uk guy is so fucking boring, what were they thinking. i swear us brits still dont get the whole thing. we treat it as some sort pop idol finals competition. its all about being over the top and extravagant.

But we usually have some good bands on the preliminary contest but some reason people vote for the bad ones. Well this year we only had bad ones but last year there were some good bands (not first place good but anyway).

It's produced by Guy Manuel De Homem Christo (=half of daft punk) and the engineer on the album this song is on, is Romain Tranchart (= modjo).. Sebastian Tellier does very thematic albums, his last one was about politics, and he recently did a digitally-funky-as-hell soundtrack together with Mr. Oizo and sebastiAn.

I don't like all of his stuff, but it's a damn strong candidate to send to eurosong.

I don't think the good bands would even want to take part.

Yeah and that's the big problem of this contest. It should really be revamped in a way that the best bands from the country battle it out. Then the show would actually be totally awesome and not just a big joke.

Edit: I agree that the Fench entry is really strong.

I really don't like the song, even though I like Modjo and Daft Punk. The song oozes '80s, but not the good kind of eighties. The really really cheap eighties. Jikes, when the song started it made me cringe a bit. :/

Still, a trillion times better than the typical eurovision song.

Eurovision 2008 is going to be an effing freak circus and I for one am going to sit this one out.

The worst part is that Estonia (that's where I live) chose another one of those stupidest things ever to be televised, that Kreisiraadio song is nothing but three tired drunks singing out of their asses.

All the while there could have been a much better song from Estonia, this one.
