The Evil Within 2 |OT| "Something not quite right"

Like I said many times, Survival Horror games are at their best when they are played in hardest difficulty. I barely surviving each encounter in Nightmare difficulty and Im alway low in both health and ammo and fucking loving it.

The first game was so unbalanced that I was concerned EW2 would be a chore on Nightmare. I know they discussed Survivor being toned down pre-release, but I didn't expect it to be this much easier.

I'm playing the game conservatively to simulate more of the Nightmare experience, but I think I could pretty realistically go full frontal assault on most encounters if I had the inclination to do so.

Okay, no matter what I do, the gunplay with pistols seems super fucked up, it feels like when you go into aiming mode, your depth perception goes all fucky

The aiming with the pistol is horrid, one of the worst I've seen in a game that isn't otherwise terrible. I can't figure out if they were going for a more nerve-wracking, realistic combat experience, or if it's just jank. I'm inclined to think it's jank, partially because aiming a pistol in real life is not even remotely this difficult, especially if you factor in Sebastian being a seasoned cop.

One tip I have is that, once you have the reticule lined up vertically, it's easier to just move Sebastian with the left stick than it is to aim with the right stick. Sebastian moves slower and it makes it easier to fine-tune the horizontal line up.

Chapter 11: What's the trick for fighting these
flamethrower guys
?

They're immune to stealth and it took me like 7 rifle headshots to kill one.

This game is the hottest garbage I've played all year, and that's as a major TEW1 fan. I'm about 2 hours in and I'm horrendously bored.

The first game had some well crafted level design and progression of gameplay and item advancement. This shit is all over the place. Union is a garbage area. The first three hours of this game and the Möbius members side quests feel like a low budget TLOU. I don't know what is supposed to feel scary yet, what is even worth going for or doing. The gameplay feels grossly unpolished (quick turn doesn't turn the camera around?) and unbalanced and I haven't seen a fraction of the cool horror ideas in doing the content here in Union that I had in 10 minutes of TEW1. Not to mention the sci fi and daughter angle here are even more garbage and contrived than anything from the first game. I don't know what I'm even supposed to fear here.

I'm so disappointed

So... you're in chapter 3? Like, I'll give the game crap, but you guys do remember, like, a whole third of the first game was in that shite city, right?

I'm playing on the default difficulty and I'm having a hard time. I'm loving the game but I'm struggling (just finished chapter 3). Almost no ammunition and first aid. Guess I must explore more but the mobs are tough!

You're two hours in but you're remarking on the first three hours? Which is it? The first hour is walk-and-talk and expository context. The second hour is a tutorial and the beginning of chapter 3.

Give it some time.

Quick turn is back + cover button, and it definitely spins the camera around. Trick or Treating the houses to find spooky horror vignettes was a lot of fun for me. At the two hour mark, I think I may have explored one house.

I didn't mind the beginning of TEW1 at all. It had a sense of progression and tight level design. This has none of that.

The beginning of TEW1 had that walk and talk and awful stealth sequence.

I wasn't sure I was gonna like the more open-ended style gameplay, but so far it's fun. I'm playing on Nightmare and it's pretty easy, but also pretty tense. At first you're kind of learning how enemies move and after that you can easily stealth-kill most of them without problem, even in areas where there's a bunch of them together. The chapter 3 area is fun, but honestly a bit bland visually, which is so far my main issue with the game. TEW1 was very distinct and rancid; you almost feel dirty just looking at the screen, but this is all very toned down. I hope they ramp it up visually in future chapters.

Still though I'm having fun and it seems a worthy follow-up.

I've explored two radio signals in union, gotten the weapons, and finished the next story marker at the restaurant. The entire experience thus far has been shite, worse than any game design in the first game.

Also the stealth sequence at the beginning of TEW1 was nowhere near as bad as trying to avoid the stupid zombies in Union

Why the fuck did they remove the ability to disarm like 90% of the wires? There's a shitload of scripted ones that are plainly visible that Seb is too stupid to go around

I really didn't like the former and didn't find the latter difficult at all. In that first area before O'Neil, just break left.

Tough luck though, man. I liked aspects of the first (combat and chapter 9 especially), but structurally I find this game way more engrossing.

I've been playing around with the
shooting range
and I genuinely can't tell why the pistols are so messed up. even with the moving targets it's fine in the range, it seems like there's a certain distance (E.G. the distance in which you're always ambushed from) in which the aiming system just fucking breaks.

Quick question,

Whats the deal with the fog lady, that you find in cedar house 336? I escaped the house but now she shows up randomly and I don't know how to make her go away.
Can I kill her?

When she shows up, just run in the opposite direction as the one you came, she'll disappear after a few seconds.

She's a pain but easily avoidable. Pretty sure you can't kill her.

first impressions

I wasn't too hot on the game at first either. Give it a little more time and see what you think. I still have a number of big issues with it, but as I played more I started to get a better perspective on what it does well.

The horror vibe gets stronger as it goes on. Still not at the level of the first game unfortunately, but getting there.

are you really that mad mikami isn't doing this

like cmon lmao

Got it last night and I've spent about 6 hours playing it and I'm still in chapter 3. Crazy just how big this area is... I have some concerns and the game is buggy-as-fuck (I know Bethesda is infamous for their lack of bug testing but holy shit, this is way buggier than the first game!) but I'm still having fun.

One thing I'm now having trouble with are these
crawling
enemies that first show up once I got out of the
gas station
. These things have loads of health, despite their appearance, and I'm having difficulty dodging their attacks. Any tips on how to deal with them?

Just avoid them. Go around the far side of the station and you can walk down the hill without even triggering their appearance. They're shitty enemies anyway.

Headshot puts them in a sligthly stunned state which lets you shoot at them freely for a few seconds, i found the big red open flesh on their back to do the most damage. After that they go at you with their rear for an attack that puts them on their regular position again, bait that attack out by just moving back and then repeat the heatshot to get them stunned again.

Edit: dont skip them lmao, they give good green gel

I have gotten used to them, they are still bad. Just because the sprint gauge is longer doesn't mea n Seb is faster. He feels exactly the same speed, save for running out of stamina, but that means nothing when enemies are constantly strapped to his ass.

Maybe you're play through is a miracle and it just somehow works for you. Maybe stop literally telling people to "Get good lol". Most of the people HACE gotten used to it. This isn't about understanding or learning, its about not liking it and thinking its bad.

Nah, you keep on calling something 'bad' without describing why and I'll keep dismissing it as just being salty that you can't fend off the enemies. It's not RE4 anymore, enemies aren't just going to shamble single file at you at slow speeds while you spend forever popping heads. Adapt or die.

It's a survival horror game, the enemies are supposed to be threatening.

Lol it's not that hard to outrun or outflank enemies at all. There's a reason people have been saying it's easy to cheese mobs in the open areas.

So I've spent like 5 hours doing everything in Ch 3, to the point that there's not a single enemy left. I'm guessing that new enemies will appear as the game progresses, but will there be new side quests and side areas to explore in the town area later on? I'm a bit worried that I did all side content.

I especially enjoyed the small one-off stories in the various houses, so I'm hoping there will be more of that.

it's been a shit game so far

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it basically plays exactly as the first game, with a visual update and some gameplay elements replacing the matches from 1. I just have a hard time picturing how someone can go from a such identical games (art direction aside, it's not nearly as gothic horror as the first, which makes sense in the plot imo) and instantly having such a hateboner for it.

Beginning in the first game was like 1-2 hours compared to 4+ hour "beginning" in the second.

Yeah, hopefully it gets a lot better. I don't think the game is trash, but the first 5 hours so far feels about 7/10 run of the mill game that's just barely worth the time to play. Not much feels particularly interesting. Feels like everything the first game did right to make it stand out as interesting (even though I think the first game overall is kinda bad) is gone. Is Masafumi Takada even doing the music anymore? The only music that sticks out early on is the piano theme from the first game.

I find the Silent Hill Downpour comparisons pretty apt, though I like Downpour more than the first 3 chapters here (I don't remember Downpour being particularly boring, plus it was creepier) but I'm a bit biased on SH. Still would consider Downpour about a 7/10 kinda game that's a lot generic as well.

In the first game I stole a key from a butcher and wandered a farm house to fight a dude with a chainsaw.

Right now it's been nothing but 1 chase scene + several idiotic TLOU zombie rejects and wandering a really bad open level with shit design.

I'm probably just gonna trade in this in tonight if it doesn't pick up.

You do you, man.
I'm personally enjoying this game a lot. Love exploring the world and discovering all the weird scripted events and small self contained stories in the town.

I'd say get the weapons, and speed through that area. Second half of the game feels a lot closer to the first game. Much better too.

Looks reception for this game will be same as first, divided. Fans of the first game will likely hate this one, while people who hated the first will love it.

That's sad to hear actually, I love chapter 3 and I hope there is more like it later on. I didn't like how linear the first game was and how much it took control off the player.

The first game felt like that too. Once something is close enough you’re running or melee’ing.

Yeah, hit detection is just as wonky as the first game.

I think the hit detection itself is acceptable, but the hitboxes are too precise. You literally have to hit a zombie's head exactly. I've missed by millimeters many times already.

It's doubly frustrating because the headshots are best in class. So visceral and punchy, some of my all time favorite headshots. A little tear falls from my eye every time I whiff one by a hair.
