The Evil Within 2 |OT| "Something not quite right"

I'm going to restart on Survival and see if the gameplay balance is better to me.

The gunplay just doesn't make a whole lot of sense at the moment (just beat
City Hall
on Nightmare). I want to see if aim assist and a lot more ammo make it feel more cohesive. The burst handgun is completely useless in this mode and stealth seems to be OP.
Are you doing the side quests? You can pretty much max out your HP before even attempting the main story missions if you do the side quests.

Ok, so last night when I spent like 3 hours playing Chapter 3 sneaking around slowly exploring every house, train car, whatever and not fighting zombies unless I had to, and exploring all the sidequest markers, it was fun for a bit and then just got tedious and boring and felt like an ubisoft marking off the checkbox (there's another house down) game. It wasn't really scary or tense, it was just slow and tedious filling out the map while walking/crawling.

Was playing it on PC at 1620p ultra, locked 30fps with a gamepad and couldn't aim for shit which is part of why I was avoiding encounters and playing stealth as much as I could.

This morning after reading the last few pages of this thread I decided to say fuck it and play it like an action RE4/RE5 game since there's plenty of ammo and enemies go down quick on normal. Turned down the visuals to 1080p/60fps, switched to KB+M, started sprinting everyone instead of walking/crawling and everytime I saw zombies I'd run up to them and headshot them with pistol or shotgun. Covered about the same amount of ground as the 3 hours last night in about 30 mins today. Was much more fun and exciting.

So yeah, last night was trying to play it like TEW1/RE7/SH as a survival horror game and it just wasn't clicking for me, but as an RE5-style action shooter with loot and upgrades I'm enjoying it now.

Yeah, the strength of stealth attacks coupled with the poor AI make the gun play seem underwhelming in comparison. Which is a shame, because the guns pack a lot of punch in audio and visuals, the shotgun most of all.

Is the performing sneak kills while in cover worth it? I feel like it is, but just wondering if anyone is against it for whatever reason?
Default difficulty setting as it probably matters.
Playing this afternoon definitely getting more into a groove. More or less cleared out the area by the
second safe house in Chapter 3
Felt damn good taking all those fuckers out.

I would think so, the main worry with stealth kills is that nearby enemies see you

Yeah, I did them all. I even switched from gamepad to M&K to do all of the
shooting gallery
rewards (except for the bejeweled ones).

It's fun and I enjoy the challenge, but it feels kind of jankier than it should. In the
Marrow
fight, the knife girl was like a gigantic difficulty spike, prompting me to retry three times -- after I knee-capped, kicked, and stomped all of the other enemies really easily. I think more ammo, less health loss, and aim assist would have made the encounter smoother and that enemy feel like a proper difficulty cap to the encounter rather than a difficulty spike.

It just reminds me of Elder Scrolls in some ways, when fighting enemies on higher difficulties when you're underpowered. Like, hitting them and then running super far away. It's ridiculous and feels wrong. I feel like Nightmare would be smoother if I was attempting the game a second time, with more of a game plan in terms of upgrades.

On Nightmare it's op. You can sit in the open and bait a zombie to run to your location. Then, you can promptly hide behind cover and use the move.

Just starting chapter 4 and wondering whether I should have picked hard, which I almost never do. The game seems kind of difficult initially when you only have a knife, pistol and hardly any ammo, but now I'm fully kitted out with weapons, have lots of ammo and have tons of herbs in my inventory. Over the course of chapter 3 it feels like the scales have tipped maybe a little too much in my favour.

No way I'm restarting though. I'm enjoying it but the thought of scouring every inch of chapter 3 all over again doesn't appeal at all right now.

So I'm about 3 hours on chapter 3 and while I was initially a little bored with the opening chapter and sab's semi awkward running animation kinda turned me off a bit, I really like how things have opened up in chapter 3.

Just sneaking around and exploring different houses is pretty fun and sneak miles are satisfying as always. I pretty excited to keep on going to see what crazy shit the game will throw at me next.

5 hours and still in Chapter 3. Love the exploration and atmosphere. So different from the first game. I like that change.

Nightmare difficulty is great. Hard but fair. Like old survival-horror games. You really have to search the city for ressources.

Wow autosave just saved my ass, would've lost about an hour of progress on a sudden crash. PS4.

Not sure if it's just coincidence, but I seem to be having a lot more technical issues in the second half. Not just a hard crash, but also texture pop-in and jank moments.

I probably should've played on Nightmare too, but I guess it's nice not constantly worrying about dying and losing progress. There's still a decent amount of tension if I pretend like I have low ammo, even though I'm packing a decent amount.

Huge bummer in Chapter 5

the timed fight against Obscura just... didn't work. It bugged out and she spent the entire time stuck inside a shelf. I just sat around and let time expire. Felt good saving all that ammo but I feel robbed of a really cool setpiece.

Really loving the game so far otherwise. 8 hours and still on Chapter 5, definitely got my money's worth.

Am I missing some painfully obvious trick to the first real boss
Chapter 5
other than simply unloading all ammo into its face?

Otherwise, fuck this game, because this fight personifies everything wrong with the combat.

While I did just pump shit in it's face, I looked around afterwards and there are quite a few environmental traps to lead it into.

And there's a way to
avoid
the fight entirely, according to an achievement.

You actually can sneak skill them. You just have to do it twice. Compared to the first game, Stealth is OP as fuck.
Stealth is indeed OP than first game. Too many ammo and health if you play conservative.

I can't seem to get the bottles to reliably distract enemies, is there something else I need to do beyond getting them in the aoe?
Bottles are pretty useless other than to escape grabs. I had many instances where i threw the bottle nearby and enemies would not even react.
I'm only three chapters in but so far there's no way this is better than the first Evil Within for me. It isn't tense/scary at all and it just drags. And man, if Sebastian says "What the hell" one more damn time. Keep in mind, I don't hate the game at all, and I've a lot left to play, but right now it's just a pale imitation of the original.
It does stretch out a bit in the beginning, but the second half has much more vibes of the original.

There are some barrels around... pretty sure there is a YT vid defeating said boss without using ammo.

OH man, I forgot about this. Think I might turn up the FOV and turn on the good old black bars.
I had to do it because I played the original with black bars, and well exploring Union kinda felt like alan wake without the bars.

Are you using all the traps around the area? There's also more traps on the far right side which I didn't find until after the fight, and I think an explosive crossbow bolt near the front entrance ahead. Otherwise yeah, unload.

You can
use the camera traps to trigger ZA WARUDO the slow time zone or you can just avoid that fight all together, on the left side there is a truck with boxed and a barrel, shoot the barrel and follow the path until you see a door that you can use to enter the City Hall.

Wow, I didn't know you could avoid the fight all together!!! I ended up killing her.

Not sure about Nightmare, but on Survivor I just hit her point blank with the shotgun about 8-10 times, strafing her in a way that made her rotate between two easily avoidable attacks, one of which left her head completely exposed. Ended up beating her and only getting hit once at the beginning, wonder how the fight plays on Nightmare.

fight is a blast on Nightmare. Low on ammo, running like hell, finding and using traps. Tons of fun.

Really wish I could adjust the difficulty upwards...I'll probably run through up to Chapter 6 on Nightmare after I beat it on Survivor, to see how different it is.

After I beat her I looked around the arena and saw all the traps, it did seem like it'd be a fun fight to play around with. I have a save file right before it, maybe I'll do it over and try to beat her using as little ammo as possible.

Like I said many times, Survival Horror games are at their best when they are played in hardest difficulty. I barely surviving each encounter in Nightmare difficulty and Im alway low in both health and ammo and fucking loving it.

Guns on nightmare feel useless anyway. Headshotted one of the knife ladies 4 times and she didn’t go down.

Nightmare difficulty is essentially a stealth game.

the fight entirely, according to an achievement.

I beat it on my fifth try (which overall didn't take too terribly long), and I accidentally found out about the two
camera traps on my second attempt, and then there was also the obvious oil to ignite, but it didn't seem to do much.

In the end, it was just an ammo dump fight. I actually almost beat it my first two attempts, but didn't realize that I should just shoot 3-4x more to finish it. Regardless, it felt mechanically cheap. You could avoid attacks, but it ate all of your stamina after two times, and then you had to just get lucky and hope that you could stall long enough for it to regenerate.

Obscura
on the other hand was comparably easy and I beat that on my first try.

After my second death, I wondered if I was even supposed to be fighting it yet, or
avoid it like at the start of the game.

really hated my time with the first game mainly because of the shit performance but i am really enjoying the 2nd game so far. I like the open ended areas also have killed every enemy so far by just using stealth so i have a lot of ammo saved up.

The sprint makes Seb do a sort of lunge move thats good at getting out of the way and you can do it in any direction. I've found it useful when I miss a shot and an enemy gets in close and is ready to swing. This game like the first is all about crowd control and keeping them away from you so I really don't see whats so different. The enemies now have different patters and their head moves around a lot but that is a good challenge, it means there is more risk for the headshot than before where it was getting a bit too OP anyway.

I also wouldn't consider any regular enemy in this so far 'bullet spongey', if you dump into the chest area it will kill them or knock them down. You can also hit legs etc to knock them down.

Seb is even faster in this game than the first one, you get so much sprint guage to start with and you don't stop moving entirely if you run out like before; now you just slow down to running speed. Really if the enemies weren't fast and savage in close range they wouldn't be threatening at all. I think you just need to get used to them tbh.
I have gotten used to them, they are still bad. Just because the sprint gauge is longer doesn't mea n Seb is faster. He feels exactly the same speed, save for running out of stamina, but that means nothing when enemies are constantly strapped to his ass.

Maybe you're play through is a miracle and it just somehow works for you. Maybe stop literally telling people to "Get good lol". Most of the people HACE gotten used to it. This isn't about understanding or learning, its about not liking it and thinking its bad.

How is this game with jump scares? I love the atmosphere and how creepy it all looks, but I really can’t handle jump scares.

I finished the game and I can't remember a single jump scare. It's a lot like Resident Evil 4 in that it's not really scary, it just uses the horror aspect to create a great spooky atmosphere and messed up enemy designs.

So far I honestly can't even remember any other than one or two that you can actually spot before they happen and then one that's scripted. Otherwise, there are too many sound cues to let you know where everything is most of the time.

Actually, if this game does anything right, it's the sound. I haven't been this impressed with audio since the first Dead Space.

Now I’m being chased by a
ghost
every now and then. The first time I had to solve some puzzle in a house I was trapped in. The second time was the same. The third time it appeared, it just disappeared after a while. What triggers it and what makes it go away? Does it leave with time or do I have to leave an area?

Area. Just run away.

Not really heavy spoilers:

After you trigger it the first time in the scripted sequence, it'll sometimes pop up while you roam around in Union and then disappear after a few seconds. These instances can be safely ignored, just run the other way and the ghost will disappear. You only need to worry about the times that the ghost triggers due to a scripted sequence, but you'll know those since you'll actually be trapped and will have to find an exit.

I am currently on Chapter 3 on regular difficulty and I am asking this sincerely... How were you able to do stealth without using any ammo?

I can provide a few specific scenarios where I feel it would be impossible, but here is one and there are several instances like this...
There is a garage in Chapter 3 that when you walk into it, the door closes and you are faced with a enemy that comes at you. How did you stealth that?
The game does this a few times, I can think of at least one more specific instance
house by the church when you are exploring the signals of the soldiers and the computer for the armory is in the basement.
For the latter I can see running away and coming back, but that first example, cannot see how it is possible to stealth unless I am missing something, and if I am, I would love to learn it!

Oh ok thanks. It’s kinda cool but I hate how items and stuff disappear during it. I had to run back and get some loot I was in the process of picking up.

I already beat the game on Pc on Survival (aka normal difficulty) and i completely disagree with that sentence: crafting materials are really scarce and you need a lot of them to craft ammo. I found myself most of the time with only 3 bullets on my sniper and maybe another 3 on my shotgun.
I dont know if that was intended, but the game really made me feel uncomfortable all the time considering i couldnt defend myself.
I think there was waaaaay more ammo in EW1

Oh ok thanks. It’s kinda cool but I hate how items and stuff disappear during it. I had to run back and get some loot I was in the process of picking up.

Yeah. I thought my game glitched. It wasn't until I saw crates lazily slung in front of a doorway that I usually go through just fine that I got the idea.

Does anyone know how to get into the truck depot? The gates chained from the other side and I can't interact with the boarded up hole.

Chapter 3 enemy encounter:
Damn that knife-wielding girl scares the crap out of me. Thought I had her when i shot both her arms off with the crossbow but that shit started regenerating and the way she ran at me almost gave me a heart attack.

Okay, no matter what I do, the gunplay with pistols seems super fucked up, it feels like when you go into aiming mode, your depth perception goes all fucky

most cases running away has been working for me. in the armory where you get the sawn off there is a section where you need to crouch through the wall. I used that to lure and stealth the enemies.

also in some cases if i have been seen in a small area running around and crouching behind objects seems to work but i think i was bugging out those enemies
