Logic tells me that it's using the mics  to get the general direction of your TV but it's still a little mind blowing.
My bedroom TV is on a swivel so I turned my TV in a completely different direction to confuse it , it seemed that it was going to throw it off track but soon as I paused & unpaused Astro Bot the onscreen controller became completely aligned with my controller again.
Edit: it's just recentering it's self whenever you start or pause a game knowing that you will most likely be pointing at the TV when you start the game.
