"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Hehe...I also said I ran that BAT file ;P. I appreciate the help efforts, but I'm sure I have seen everything you are seeing from "searches". My ONLY hope is that Valve solves it, or I run into someone who has had same problem and has a solution.

You guys will have to fill this thread with info on how fun the games are until I get to play ;P

So much for the reviews. You'd think they would ave gotten them out early for people on the fence about getting it for steam or a console. Anyway enjoy everyone who will be unlocking on steam. I work my 8-5 job as usual so i will be picking this up after work.

So I'm going to pick up my copy tomorrow, but I don't exactly want to make two trips. Is Orange Box already at retailers, or do I have to wait until the evening?

I'd call or check online before you head out to pick it up.

I got Orange Box today for 360.

Half-Life 2 looks great overall, I'm not sure where the Xbox1 port idea comes from, it's clearly the PC version (the Xbox 1 version has a lot fewer people/objects in the opening, the 360 version has everything the PC has, plus the HDR lighting).

However it seems to load the levels like the Xbox1 port, I'm reinstalling my old PC copy of HL2 now to see if the PC does the same thing.

I haven't been paying attention to the previews (avoiding them for the most part), but does it run at 60 or 30?

Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One replays COMPLETE!

I started replaying HL back in August and decided to continue on. I was about halfway through my HL2 replay when the TF2 beta came out, so I took a break. Then I moved home. So, over the past 2 days I've put in about 15 hours of Half-Life goodness and I'm fucking pumped for Episode 2 and Portal. I was going to play Portal first, but having just finished Episode 1 again, I really want to jump right back into it, so I'll definitely be firing up E2 as soon as possible.

That said, I predict disastrous results for Valve's servers, so I'll see you all in the morning.

I might be able to post some comparison pics between 360 and plain jane HL2 on PC at 720p in a little bit.

All depends on how well the PC install goes :lol

Lasting Appeal 9.5
Around 30 hours of single player gaming (if you include HL2 and Ep 1, which we are)

Fuck the sun. Fuck it in its boiling hot anus.

I'm playing it right now and I see the same thing. I finished HL2 PC twice and HL2 on the XBOX. No way is this a port of the XBOX version. And the load times are not bad for me. They are on par with the PC version and in some cases better. Maybe they can be the same and the only reason I think the 360 version is better is because it shows you an actual progress bar. It's too bad they couldn't get the sections to load faster with this release.

well this is IGN we are talking about here....they did a head-to-head for DiRT a few weeks back and proclaimed the 360 version superior to the PS3 version basically because of rumble.....despite it running worse, loadtimes taking longer, etc.

Oh wow, cool. I didn't know in Steam you could right click on a game that is pre-loaded (view pre-load info) and see a countdown to when it's unlocked.

Steam says: 52 minutes until EP2 and Portal are playable.

Oh fuck me, an hour and I haven't even started my two 3-page papers :lol Fuck this is gonna be a long night, the race to finish two papers before 3am begins...

What countdown, aren't you guys playing Orange box (at least the 360 version is out). Apologies to the European players of course saw the extension on your release date :(

We have been playing TF2, but Portal and Episode Two unlock on Steam in 35 minutes.

The countdown until the next stage is done loading. Almost halfway now!

I'm really digging Episode 2 so far. Really impressive visuals, and a lot of action.
First part with the ant lions is a little too long though.

I'll check out TF2 and Portal tomorrow.

Four hours of incredible boredom with scattered pockets of nice, that's Ep1 in a nutshell. Hopefully Ep2 will be good enough to make me forget that terrible experience.

Here's our Portal review:

http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=612

From the moment you start playing, the game's immersive, self-contained story unfolds without a break in the action, in signature Valve style. A feminine robotic voice greets you when you awake in a sterile, gray observation room and guides you from one test chamber to the next. This seemingly innocuous guide quickly gains a sort of benevolent taskmaster personality and becomes the game's central narrative device, lending encouragement or even humorous discouragement in some cases. "The enrichment center regrets to inform you that this next test is impossible," the voice says at one stage's outset. "Make no attempt to solve it." Though the comedic elements are a welcome addition, the tidbits of information offered by the monotonous voice actually reveal much about why you're running through this obstacle course of sorts inside the so-called Aperture Laboratories in the first place.
Portal's 19 test chambers in its 10 chapters are a perfectly encapsulated gameplay experience, with each new test increased in length, and building on prior challenges an expertly tuned pace. The final chapter culminates in a thrilling test combining all prior exercises and wrapping up the surprisingly fleshed-out story as well. Still, despite Portal being a perfect slice of innovative gameplay, its two to three hours of gameplay end far too quickly.
Whichever version you play, you're going to be impressed again by Valve's commitment to innovation--not to mention the game's ending sequence, which I have no reservations in saying features the greatest original musical composition--courtesy of Jonathan Colton--ever included in a video game to date. The song is equal parts triumphant, humorous, and enjoyable--a fitting end to a game summed up by all three.

(Episode Two review went up earlier: http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=610 )

Its 3 a.m. over here in Hamilton, Ontario. There will be no waiting till tomorrow. I will have my Orange Box soon! :D :D :D 7 min left!!

Yeah this could all end in tears for sure, Steam has had problems in the past on big release days with unlocking, lets hope it goes smooth

I'll be playing Episode Two first now, simply because I don't feel like using my brain this early in the morning. :lol (Even a little bit)
