"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

once per four hours of tf2? oh, well i haven't played it nearly that long.

Yeah, I think I've played a bit too much. :lol

(Sorry about the other night- I know I'd said I would play a few rounds, but a roach showed up in my dorm room and I can't stand having them in the room, so I ended up spending 30 minutes ripping furniture away from the walls just to kill it. :lol When I got back, you'd logged off.)

the cake is a lie

I only played the few levels of Portal too :( both my roommates play it nonstop and one just beat it (I purposely avoided the end video). It pretty much alone sold them on The Orange Box.

Valve fucking rocks.

Just a few years late I finally completed Half-Life 2. :D

Replaying through it now. Currently at Ravenholm.

Can't say much about the Combine AI but the zombie bits are totally great.

Also, this game is still just as fun and compelling even though... again, the Combine AI is weak. Soldiers will charge me non-stop. The ol' bait them through the door and shoot them one by one as they come in trick works wonders in HL2.

HL2 also looks great with motion blur, real-time shadows and HDR (I played through it pre-Lost Coast).

I bought it yesterday and haven't touched the HL2 stuff yet but I've finished Portal and played somewhere around 6-7 hours straight of TF2 last night, so far so great. TF2 makes the package for me - it's freakin' awesome. This is the type of game XBL has been missing - purely team-based objective multiplayer. Not even an option for deathmatch crap. Love it.

the fact that episode 1 is beatable by only using the grav gun emphasizes in my mind that half-life, as a franchise, has always been about something other than gunplay.

Indeed. The game looks very crisp at all times. Reason I never finished the game was due to ditching my PC to purchase a Apple computer at the time. The XBOX version while impressive for the hardware it was running on was just too much of a downgrade for me to fully enjoy.

I now can't wait to fully get into Portal and then continue the story in the two episodes.

The Game was great. I got to the
antlion boss fight
and then called it a day. The next day I couldnt get into my account or recover it. It was stolen!!! Now I am stuck waiting for valve to get back to me through the online questioning since they don't have a number to call. Its been multiple days...

Did they say for sure that somebody else is using it? My account stopped working for eight months until they realized it was a problem on their end and gave me a new password after I gave them all my transaction numbers. I honestly think the service has gotten worse since '04. Never used to have any problems with it.

awwww i was hoping for an episode 3 trailer at the end of ep2 :(

I was kind of as well, but let's remember that a lot of the story stuff for the ep2 trailer was changed i.e. alyx falling from the train. They're probably just trying to avoid something like that happening again.

Got The Orange Box today at home! After some trade in's it only cost me $20. What a steal. Can't play it until I go back to school tomorrow though. I'll probably dive right into playing the HL2 portions in order starting with HL2.

Anyone know what that update for the 360 did? I was having mild lag on TF2 the day before, but when I tried to play last nite after the update, it booted me out of nearly all my matches even though there wasn't any lag and every match that I was able to get in on where I was able to stay, it lagged like there was no tommorrow.

It is. It's much more about puzzling your way through the environment than just shooting it to pieces, which is probably why Portal is such a great fit for the package.

Just finished Episode 1 for the first time. Fantastic experience, if a little bit weaker than the original. I can also see where the cramped level complaints come from. My thoughts:

-WTF is up with the beginning? Kinda copout-ish. I really wanted to know what exactly happened right after the portal collapsed.
-Alyx has got to be one of the, if not the, best characters in all of gaming. Simply phenomenal.
-Zombines are hilarious. First time I saw one, my mind immediately jumped to the picture of the walrus with the bucket and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. :lol
-Lowlife was the best level. The requirement of the flashlight, excellent sound design, and limited weaponry and ammunition made for some really tense moments.

I'll be starting (and maybe even finishing) Ep. 2 later tonight. Can't wait to see what happened right after that explosion.

Hey guys, I have a semi-offtopic question about this package:

If I buy this for the PC, do I also have access to a free download of Counter-Strike Source?

I haven't used Steam or played CS since the CS 1.6 days because of my crappy computer. I was going to get The Orange Box for the Xbox360, but since I'm putting a new computer together soon, I figured I should pick this up for the PC instead. If this doesn't include a free download of CS:Source, then I'll have to purchase that separately because I do miss playing it.

Thanks

so far I beat Portal (2hr) and Ep 1 (4hr) and tomorrow ill probably get stuck into EP2 before going back over the three i've beaten with commentary on and going for the achievements I missed.

Vortigaunts, using their powers, grabbed Alyx from the tower, and you from the Gman's stasis dimension thingy. You both ended up outside, away from the explosion.

Nope. CS:S does not come with it.

Is it ever explained any more than that? That seems kinda weak. (and even contradictory- I thought the
Gman took you somewhere else at the end of HL2?)

Well, the Vortigaunts are shown to be moving you from that place against the Gman's will.

Played a good deal of TF2 last night and today. The game is freaking awesome, except for the awful lag/disconnect/freeze problems and the fact that everyone wants to play on 2Fort.

Also, I don't have a gaming PC and only played HL2 on Xbox when it first came out. I've started HL2 from the beginning, and I was frankly stunned at how well the graphical upgrade highlighted the wonderful art design.

damn TF2 is practically unplayable. I've tried playing it like 10 times and everytime it lags like crazy and eventually disconnects. And i've never had any real problems on Live before. HOpefully the fix it cause the game looks fun as hell.

TF2 runs nicely for me if I only play 12 player games.

I was getting owznored as offense and defense, but medic I am good at because I am persistent and spy I was doing okay, but the characters move so quickly that I get owned trying to backstab.

Holy shit I just beat Portal and that shit was amazing. The dialog from the computer was perfect :lol The song at the end was awesome to lolol. So worth the orange box all together.

Wait, the PC version has achievements?
People already answered this however I have a different take.

In one word "Yes." But in all reality it truly doesn't matter. The achievements on the 360 are what really matter. That's where you compare your gamer score to everyone else and its very easily seen because everyone uses the same platform..

Checking someone else's steam account for achievements? Please... They just threw that in there so the 4 people that could potentially care can't bitch.

seriously...unless Valve releases a update, TF2 will just end up being completely unplayed by me =/

....its that bad

Me too. When it plays it's fun as hell, but having it freeze four or five times in an hour and a half fucking sucks.

I wish they let you chose what game you want to give as a "gift" through Steam. It would be a lot more useful to be able to give somebody CSS or DoD Source instead of a single player game that they either A) played when it came out, B) Own if they bought Orange Box, or C) Probably are going to play on 360 or not at all. I guess you could play HL2DM with them but Valve stopped supporting that a while ago and it's not good for people that aren't used to using the gravity gun.

Anybody know if Circuit City is still likely to have copies? They're still advertising the $40 price, so I assume that'll hold for at least a few more days.

Anyone up to the Bonus maps in Portal yet? I like the "fewest portal" challenges. It's freaking crazy what it takes to get "gold" on some of those levels. I was able to get Gold on a few and Silver on most, but some have me totally puzzled on how you beat them with a ridiculously few amount of portals.

Damn Portal was an awesome ride I can't wait until we get some user created maps. Sad thing is I haven't even touched Episode 2 yet and that was the main reason I got the orange box!

As posted in the HL2:Ep. 2 thread:

"Just ran through Ep. 1 and 2 back to back for the first time ever in an all day gaming marathon....holy crap. I already posted my thoughts on Ep. 1 (loved it- but found it weaker than HL2 and a little too short) so I won't fully reiterate them here. On to Ep. 2...

This could very well be my GOTY. (God, this is getting tossed around a lot these days.) Easily my favorite HL game, it's just superb from start to finish. (Especially the finish) Some notes:

-Hunters are BY FAR the most fun HL enemy to fight. (Keep in mind I've never played the first one, so I dunno what the marines are like.) Not to mention their design is wonderful, animations perfect, and sound incredibly distinctive.
-Having just come from Ep. 1, Ep. 2 seemed a lot more story heavy. I do agree with the sentiment that Valve isn't quite pushing it out fast enough. What is the plan for the series? Finish HL2 with Ep. 3 and then conclude the series with HL3? Or just keep putting them out indefinitely?
-Pacing was even better than the original HL2. It literally feels like they took all the showstopping moments in a full featured game and just strung them together with nothing inbetween. I played for 5 hours straight (having come from playing Ep. 1 for 3 hours straight) and didn't feel interested in stopping once.
-What's the big deal with the
Borealis
? I read a HL story synopsis before I played HL2 for the first time back when it came out and I can't recall ever hearing/seeing/reading about it, yet it seems like we're supposed to know what it is.
-The final battle is the single greatest encounter/fight I've played in a long time. It really does make use of everything you've learned (Dynamic gun fights with enemies at close to mid range, using the gravity gun to throw things, driving, etc.) and, more importantly, it does so in a way that makes sense to the game. By avoiding some hackneyed final boss encounter, it avoided one of the few pitfalls that Bioshock, as much as I love it, hit.
-Final story sequence was more of an ending than both HL2's and Ep. 1's. Action filled, intriguing, and even a bit moving, it hints at extremely interesting (maybe a better choice of words unforseen) consequences in Ep. 3.
Eli's death was quite predictable though. I literally asked out loud "Is Eli going to die or something?" when he turned to Gordon after the launch of the rocket and gave him his final speech.

Valve, get that Ep. 3 trailer out there. Or, better yet, get Ep. 3 out here!"

I just finished portal, finished ep 1 and 2 yesterday

Where Eli dies, so sad

Ep1 took me three hours, Ep 2 (which looks fantastic on 360) took me around 5 hours
(the mission with taking down the striders was intense

Definitely. I was afraid I wasn't going to encounter a whole lot of them. But man was I wrong. X)

It loosely ties in with Portal, so it might be more meaningful if you've played that. The Borealis was operated by Aperture Science, who was competing with Black Mesa to create portal technology. The Combine is interested in acquiring this technology and the resistance wants to destroy it to make sure they never get it. I'm pretty sure Eli was also concerned about it leading to another resonance cascade.

That's certainly a matter of perspective...

I'm glad I played Portal first cause I don't know if I'd catch the
aperture science
references. Very awesome though.

I think we'll see the portal gun in ep 3 :)

back someone provide a back story on the Vortigaunts. I never played HL1 and i wanna know why they are so powerful!
Vortigaunts were psychic alien slaves from a dimension called Xen. They were slaves of something called the Nihilanth, which was essentially the Xen version of Dr. Breen.

In HL1, Gordon killed the Nihilanth, freeing the Vortigaunts from its powerful psychic control. But they were still enslaved by the "greater master," the Combine.

Sorry if this has been asked, but:

Is HL2 rendering native in 1080p on the 360?

I have my 360 set to upscale all my games to 1080p, but in the settings menu of HL2 it reports the res as 1920 x 1080 which I though was a wierd thing for the game to list. Meaning, wouldn't the upscaling being done outside of the game itself, and thus game game would report a resolution of near 720p?

Is HL2 running native 1080p? Can't really test the difference visually right now, but if noone knows I can check later.

Actually, Kliener wants the technology to use it. Eli wanted it destroyed which is why he died. Think about it. G-Man probably wants the resistance to get the technology for his personal reasons, and Eli stood in the way. G-Man knew Eli was gonna die, that's why he sent the "Prepare for unforeseen consequences" message when Eli refused to follow his plans and attempt to have Gordon and Alyx destroy the borealis.

They haven't said anything for sure since I am still waiting for them to reply to my original submission. I am basing this on their sheet of when to contact them if you had an account stolen. The fact that I can't login and that it won't send me an email to switch passwords.
