"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

I'd like to thank you for your detailed impressions. I am at the Water Canal part and am really asking myself if it is worth going on with this game. The 2 main reasons I am holding on to the Orange box is all the praise it gets, and I feel like I have to keep giving it a chance (need to get the gravity gun) to experience the praise others give it. And I am eagerly waiting to see if Valve can patch TF2 and the lag issues it has (it probably is my most favorite multi-player shooter ever).

Other then that, Half-Life 2 is pretty much doing nothing for me at this point.... but as a dedicated gamer, I'll keep trudging along.

Dude, noone is forcing you to play the game. In fact, by how you make the game sound, PLEASE stop playing the game

The bottom line about the game is that a whole lot of us don't get it. we get to the air boat sequence and our brains deflate when presented with a simple and logical puzzles and we are forced to put halo back in the system

:lol It's oddly true.

I actually think that GhaleonEB made the right choice in returning The Orange Box. Personally, I don't even know why he bought it in the first place. Hell, there should be some kind of moratorium on Halo fans talking about Half-Life, because it just doesn't seem to be what they're looking for in a shooter.

5.1 or Stereo?

If it's 5.1, I want proof and tell me how the fuck it works.

5.1. Proof: Helicopter in my TV, center channel. Heli behind me, rear channels. Left, right, back left, back right all separated.

I'm a bit disappointed you didn't end up liking this game as much as I do.
But, from reading your impressions, it's obvious that you gave this game a fair chance.
Also, HL2 is long; so I commend you on playing through the whole game and giving it a fair chance the whole way through. Even when it meant sticking through parts you didn't particularly enjoy (and many parts DO drag on).

Also, I was really impressed by your impressions. There is alot there and I think all of it is extremely valid. I could see where you were coming from in every circumstance. I wish alot more impressions read like that.

Anyways, hope you like the rest of Orange Box. :p

Proof: Picture of your receiver confirming that it's 5.1 when you play HL2?

you didn't read my last post did you.... Go read it and waste your time somewhere else... I still will continue to play this game, regardless of what I posted....

Not my experience with the games. I love Halo. I've played Halo 1 for well over 300 hours (especially at LAN parties), Halo 2 for less, but still a lot, and a ton of Halo 3 (mostly SP). I've also bought HL2 a total of 3 times with packs like this (twice on PC and once on 360), and like playing it a lot.

But to each his/her own, I guess.

Ditto. I actually got kinda bummed when I had to stop the airboat for some on-foot puzzle. Sand Traps and Nova Prospekt are the weakest parts of the whole HL2 experience for me. After that is just gets better and better and better.

Well, I'm not saying it's mutually exclusive to enjoy both. I've played Halo 1 & 2 and enjoyed them! I've just had bad experiences with the Halo fans on this board shitting all over anything that isn't Halo (BioShock, anyone?).

Yeah, but I think that's largely because there has been a large contingent of people here who have bashed Halo fans from the high pedestal of PC FPSes with the same contempt and they saw it as their rightful comeuppance. Hell, even the mods here partake in the Halo bashing!

That is not to say their HL criticism is just, of course; (if that motivation is, indeed, part of the reason behind it) it's just to say that neither side has been exempt from snobbery.

Aside from us sensible folk who love both series. :P

Edit: Having just read many the complaint posts you seem to be referring to, I take back what I said, at least in the context of those posts. Ghaleon's and the others' posts over the past two or so pages seem reasonable enough. (I have no doubt, though, what I wrote is true of others in pages past.)

No, you're right. And I shouldn't be so harsh (I probably even look worse with the HL2 avatar ... but hey, I needed something for Christmas).

I think I've just grown tired of the "gunplay" arguments and other such things that we've heard repeatedly. Are the guns in Half-Life kind of lame? With the exception of the crossbow, pulse rifle and maybe the magnum, yes. Does the game sort of drag on in some areas? Definitely! However, I don't know of anyone who loves HL2 to argue the contrary. Nobody is out there proclaiming HL2 to have the best guns in the world or that the enemies have the most realistic reactions or that the AI. Those are not the strengths of the game(s). The strength of the Half-Life series is in the level design, the depth of the story, the immersion, the interaction with characters, the puzzles, the platforming and the idea that you can build an FPS where directions are not explicitly laid out for the player. Hell, the addition of Alyx has been another strong aspect, showing that you can actually have an AI partner that acts and responds intelligently, not to mention also having a worthwhile personality.

So why continue to argue against the game on the basis of elements that fans of the game mostly agree on, anyway? I know that sounds really pathetic, but honestly, maybe the Half-Life series just isn't for you and perhaps you could have read up on it a bit before jumping in? This isn't any sort of elitist attitude, it's just the typical trade-offs in game design decisions that may or may not fit your interests.

truth. I also acknowledgde these faults, but after finishing HL2 I was just so amazed by the complete package and the way the developers built the game. It says enough that after finishing the game and the episodes, the HL-universe and its characters were stuck in my head for days and I kept wanting to go back. Few other series do that to me. The way the main game ends, how the episodes build on it... awesome.
I love how Valve made me feel I was playing a first person game and not necessarily a fps. People bitch about the beginning of HL2 being too 'slow', but I thought that was one of the best sections in the game. You go from being a Combine monkey's bitch, to running on rooftops trying to be that one free man. I also loved how the evolution in enemies and threats you face. When you go from lvl 1 Combine monkey to a mine-throwing Chopper and airships, you know they're not fucking around anymore.

HL2 is just one of those games you appreciate more when you've finished it and events start to stick in your head and you reflect on them. At least that was the case for me.

I know, what is supposed to be wrong with it? I don't get it.

Another thing I don't get is complaints about the AI. People must stop playing after the roof stop sequence where the AI did just stand there and not bother taking cover. Of course HL2, like every other game ever made does get harder as you go on, and later in the game if you crank that up to hard the combine will peg grenades at you to flush you out, they'll rush you, they'll outflank you. This is not 'simple' AI, it's not revolutionary by any means but it's more than competent.

Halo fans like to denigrate all other fps as having 'inferior' AI. I've played plenty of Halo throughout the years and never will I know what is so fasmatastically awesome about it. I have never seen any dramatic difference between the AI of Halo and that of the average standard of other modern FPS games. It’s nothing at all special and like HL2 while it has more than competent AI it is also nothing revolutionary.

I planned on buying the Orange box for 360, that was until i played the demo of Episode Two, and witnessed a uglier looking Half Life 2, with a crappier(y) framerate on my 360, then on my 4 year old PC?

Now this is not trolling, i love my 360, and i really love Half Life 2, but boy it feels like crap playing it, at least the demo does.

I still want it for Portal and Team Fortress 2, need another game to switch between COD 4 online.

If that's true then just get Portal and TF2 on steam. I bought the whole package on my xbox because I didn't feel like upgrading my 6600 just to play a 2 year old game on max stats.

Dark10x will obviously disagree.

Anyway it's hard to believe that it actually looks worse on your 360 than on a 4 year old PC, even I don't buy it. I mean I could understand it looking worse than on a 1-year old PC but not 4-year old one.

Get the OB for your 360 and just play Portal and TF2. They are much fun, on any platform and since you love your console and have an old PC - 360 is the best place to enjoy OB for you!

Fuck HL2. I just got to the part where you need a jet-ski and I didnt saw it anywhere. Got to the end where I have to jump over a fence and dont have it. Talked with Jebus and told me I needed the jet ski. Since I didnt saw it first time I went all the way back and NOTHING! no jet ski, hover or whatever it is. I think Im gonna give up on this game and wont start from the beginning

:lol :lol :lol

Yeah dude, I was like WTF is this?! I didnt saw a jetski or anything since I first saw water. And I looked for it, since I didnt found it I thought, Hey maybe Ill see it if I keep walking. Got through the tanks and everything, shot down the chopper and then another chopper comes. Had to use invicibility code since he kept killing me. Got to the fucking ramp and stuck there. I did everything and nothing. Ive never gotten so pissed, not even Ninja Gaiden made me this pissed off.

That's funny, when I first played HL2 I made the same mistake. However after around 2 minutes or so of running I thought this can't be right, it's wide open, there's no guys, no ones talking, so I ran back and found the car :p

Invincibility code though? Lame! You got what you deserved! :D

Im not one to use codes, I love a challenge. Its just since that chopper kept killing me I used it and turned it off when I got to the end. I think Im gonna pass on this game and play episode 1

Don't, it's worth it.

After I finished EP2 it reminded me how special the the HL series really is.

If someone would provide a pic with where it was located it would be helpful. Then Ill check if it is in the same place. Even when I got to the building where there is a metal platform where it just drops down I thought there would be one. But nothing there either.

Wow.

I bought the Orange Box(360) two weeks ago, and it took me a week and a half to play through HL2, Eps. 1, Eps. 2, and Portal. What an amazing experience. I only played part of HL, and it was years ago, so I made sure to familiarize myself with the story before jumping in. Aside from the small complaint of getting stuck on teammates, which just shouldn't happen, I had a fantastic time. Fantastic voice work and story, great puzzles, and the gameplay was as fun as I remembered(I played up to Ravenholm at a friend's house when it released). To say that I'm anticipating the next eps.(atleast, I'm assuming they're going with another episode) would be an understatement.

Also, some of you guys are ridiculous with generalizations. I'm a huge Halo fan and I loved HL2, though Bioshock was far and away the best FPS I played this year.

Also, I'm sorry to whoever had trouble finding the boat, but that's just hilarious. Running on foot that far would make me take the disk out, snap it, burn it, and send the melted bits to Valve.

They're working on Episode 3 now (no release date yet). The Episodes make up what Valve says would've been Half Life 3. Once the episodes are done they will continue the series, but they haven't figured out how yet, whether it be a full sized sequel or more episodic content.
