"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Does anyone know of any mods for Halflife 1 & 2 to allow full use of a 360 joypad configuration on the PC. Mouse and keyboard users please don't flame me I've tried repeatedly and just can't manage it.
Would really love to play Halflife 1 as I loved The Orange box on my 360

Ok, still stuck at the part in the prison with the three turrets, and at this point, I think I'm a little bit past just "annoyed"...
The best strategy I can come up with is to hide in one of the two open cells and have the turrets placed somewhere nearby so I can use the gravity gun to quickly set them back up once they get knocked over.

I'm mostly irritated by the fact that the game seems to really stack the odds way too far against you in this part. I'm using the same weapons as the enemies, yet they can take half my health away with a single shotgun blast from the other side of the room, yet I can be emptying pulse rifle rounds right into their face and they don't seem bothered enough by it to stop shooting me while I'm doing it. It also doesn't help that the turrets don't always seem to like to fire right away, and they don't always flip back up quickly when you're holding them, either. To top it off, the way you constantly get stuck on the environment and objects, which was just a little bothersome before, is EXTREMELY irritating at this point. I've probably had at least ten deaths that have come from me trying to scramble back to my little hole but getting stuck against a barrel or turret, unable to move.
That's pretty much what everyone does. It's even suggested by the game thanks to that convenient empty locker. If you never want to pull the trigger, though, you can stack a bunch of boxes and barrels to climb over the right balcony. Take out the last turret and run over to the boxes and jump up. Viola, camping!

The best stratagy I've developed is to actually bring a turret with you to that part. After the first turret segment with 2 turrets, just grab one and carry it with you. You only have to go through a few rooms with it, and it actually proves a good ally. At the three turret part, just hide in the room with the health and ammo dispensors (where you get the turrets) and set up two on each side. You won't have much shooting to do, but if you should have to, a single shotgun blast should suffice. Otherwise, your Gravity Gun should be out to pickup knocked down turrets or repeal enemy grenades. This helped me thorough many a Hard run. Good Luck!

super late to the party on this game.

just finished all of the games and gotta say i am drooling in anticipation to the next part of the story.

the cra mechanics where a bit clunky but i became quite attached to the characters by episode two that the ending really took me by surprise.

any word on when the next part of this story is due out?

Episode 3? When it's done. That's the usual deadline :)

I'm actually playing through Episode Two on easy lugging around the gnome. I often misplace him.

(EDIT) Jaded Alyx's date seems plausible.

Yeah, there are a couple of parts in the game that drag a bit, but It doesn't ruin the overall experience (which IMO is excellent). The pacing in the episodes are better. Great series.

Gabe Newell said he wasn't allowed to talk about it and Doug Lombardi has said that he won't talk about it.

:p

Chapter 5: Under the Radar was amazing!

So I'm causally riding in my beat up muscle car going from supply cache to supply cache with my girl, and I'm getting sweet Road Warrior vibes at the moment. Everything seems calm as I pass by the gas station and White Forest Inn, then... An ambush! I immediately run into the inn and upstairs as something appears to be shooting me. I hide in a corner crouched down/fetal position as I collect my bearings. Hunter and Combine rounds/grenades fly through the windows. I spot the sniper atop a roof across the street that was shooting me through the window. I impale him with a crossbow bolt to the face! Head back down stairs and kill a few waves of Combine soldiers. Then a fucking Hunter jumps though the window, I screamed! I pop off a few double shot shotgun blasts and head into the basement to reload. I look back up the stairs and see that the hunter is following me down the stairs. I sprint away towards the other exit in the basement and right as I turn around another hunter is right there and kicks me back into the wall! I'm around 17 HPs at this time with no suit. I fire another double shot shotgun blast at the first Hunter and he falls, I scream again but this time more manly and run back upstairs to collect some health and finish the last 2 hunters off.

LTTP I know, but that was one the most exciting gaming moments I've ever had. 2 more chapters to go :D

finished this the other night. episode 2 was pretty cool, didn't have that magic i've felt for tru classics, but it is an old game by now i guess.

i thought HL2 and episode 1 where NO where as good, ep2 fixed a lot of things though...just the pacing and mixing up the game play alot more.

Love to know what takes them so long. The whole idea with episodes was to avoid the wait for a full sequel yet here we are.

8-10 hours. 10 hours tops.
I know your post is ancient. But the average completion times were just under 6 and just under 7 hours for episodes 1 and 2, respectively. Though, admittedly, maybe the fastest 15% of players would complete them both in under 10 hours.

It didn't pan out. I'm kind of glad, Episode One and Two have been great.

That whole idea was thrown out the window pretty early on, heh.

Alright! Decided to resurrect this old thread about Orange Box because I just finished HALF LIFE 2 for the first time ever. What a freaking amazing game! Did the original PC version of Half Life 2 come out before Metroid Prime?? because I can tell that the developers were heavily influenced by this game.. but I think it does everything better than Metroid Prime.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

The level design is brilliant in the way it teases you with the super grav gun at the end of the game. The vehicle parts weren't as painful as I have heard.. the run and gun parts are fun as hell.. the way Gordon interacts with his team amazes me.. the puzzle and platforming parts are brilliant.. once again.. level design.. wow.. I'm about to start Episode 1.. if it's anything close to being this good, I'll be floored.

HL2 came out after Metroid Prime. About 2 years later, i think. I'm not really seeing the heavy influences though. Care to elaborate?

And yeah, Episode 1 and especially 2 are an improvement over vanilla HL2. (I like those "painful" vehicle sections just fine. I don't understand the complaints.)

Since it's here on the front page I figured I'd comment. I decided to replay HL2 after listening to the Retronauts talking about all things HL. I've probably played this game almost ten times, but it's been a good 15 months since my last play through. The game is still pretty and flat out as awesome as ever. That is all.

Yeah, I'm replaying the whole series thanks to Retronauts.

Played up to the Blast Pit in HL1 last night.

I love the series so much. Can't wait to see Ep. 3 and any potential Portal crossovers.

Episode 1 isn't that bad, and the beginning is pretty cool. But Episode 2 is absolutely incredible, so keep on truckin'!

yeah man, talk about getting a lot of game for your money.. I bought it at full price, but damn.. JUST now finished HL2.. enjoyed a few nights of TF2.. didn't play Portal, Ep1, or Ep2 yet.. about to start Ep1.

That's a full game. Chock-full, some might say.

Which system?
One of the console versions probably. Ive actually started getting into TF2 on the X360 and theres quite a few people playing throughout the day. They're all in player matches. Searching can be a bit weird and not display anything but the trick is to keep going back and trying again. Searching times are like 3 seconds so it doesn't matter how many times you do it.

I can also testify that the 360 TF2 community is still alive, and in fact one of the more mature communities on the platform.

Ha, I just went back to playing Half-Life 2 too, today. The game is absolutely amazing. I just wish they did an actual decent patch for the PS3 version, at least to reduce the loading times. Half-Life 2 Episode 3 better come to the PS3 and be a decent port. Valve has absolutely no excuse at all. They're a great company, but their stance on the system is shit.

Edit: The good news that I should mention, is that my parents just bought a new C2Q 9300 computer, so I'll probably be playing Half-Life Episode 3 on that over the summer break.

To be fair, they're a surprisingly small company, so there's no real way they could do the port internally. It could have either been on the 360 or PS3 and given the relative status of each in market, Valve/EA put their efforts into the 360.

If you'd like HL2 and E1 for PC, let me know. I've still got them sitting around as gifts.

Really? I hadn't heard it was summer.....if so that'd be awesome. I'm guessing wishful thinking on all our parts though....

okay here's my review of HALF LIFE EPISODE 1.. I just finished the game as I continue my way through the xb360 version of Orange Box. I enjoyed the game... it's only like 4 hours long.. but really it's hard as hell so I had to repeat every part 10 times (a bit frustrating, but the game was so short that it really didn't matter). I like the way Alyx follows you for the whole game, that gives the game a fresh dynamic. The scripted events are all squeezed together and you almost feel like you're watching a movie script unfold before your eyes rather than playing a game. It's a weird game, for sure. I loved it, though.

I hear that Episode 2 is better, and I'm about to start it... my review coming soon. peace and love - peace and love ("Ringo Star")

I've seen it in the Wal-Mart bargain bins in the video game section for that price. This will be perfect presents for friend of mine.

Every time this thread gets bumped I always think there's some news about Episode 3 I should know about.

Once again, I leave disappointed.

I beat Half-Life 2 earlier this week. It was absolutely an amazing experience. I cannot wait to start Episode 1, but I'm waiting until break so I can play it on PC.

I finished Far Cry 2 last night and what do I pop into my PS3? Orange Box. I've finished HL2 and both episodes at least 2/3 times each and the games never get old to me. I actually loaded up the Nova Prospekt level and was playing through that. So good, this game. I've actually triple dipped on Half Life 2. Bought it on the original X-box, then bought a copy of Orange Box to play on a borrowed 360, than bought Orange Box again for PS3. I've never regretted it. ;) This is probably my favorite fps franchise ever. I truly hope Valve/EA release Episode 3 for the PS3. I'm sure they will. And if there are people still on the fence about picking up the PS3 version, pick it up! Especially if it's really cheap now. It's not as bad as people made it out to be when it was released. Paying cheap for it, and you get five great games. I'm not too sure how big of an online community TF2 has on PS3 but the last time I played it (which was a while ago to tell the truth) I didn't have a hard time finding matches. But I love the Half Life series.

maybe it's not fair because it's like five great games in one, but still the best $60 you can spend for your 360.

BOW TO YOUR SENSEI

ive had orange box on PC since launch, and played through every game several times already (TF2 more of course).

but i just picked it up for $20 for 360. its a great version. i beat Portal, did some advanced maps and started through HL2 again.

i also got a new monitor and a new video card, so ill probably be playing through most of the games on my PC yet again.

its getting to be like a sickness.

thats goofy. any EP3 news would obviously get its own thread. if you think people arent still playing Orange Box, you're not thinking straight.

Really can't believe some people haven't bought this game, it's so amazing especially at $20. I've been trying to get people I know to get it.

I played through Half Life 1 for the first time a few days ago (bought it from the 10 year anniversary :D) and wow. So awesome. I really want to play Half Life 2 again but I'll kill myself when I finish Episode 2 and there's still no release date in sight for Episode 3.

I really enjoyed Half-Life 2, wasn't crazy about it, but it set me up for Episode One, which really flipped the switch in my head and turned me into a fanatic. Episode One really blew my mind, and Episode Two blew it all over again.

I picked up 4 copies(for a total of 5)for system link play for my sons and their friends. 3 or 4 of them already have a copy, so they can have 8 player matches now. Should be alot of fun for xmas break. Hopefully I'll be able to try out tf2 with them, from what I've seen it seems like alot of fun.
