"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Jesus CHRIST now when I try to load a recent save, it exits out and gives this error:

failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer

I'm just about to give up :lol
You failed...at DirectX and life.

Just finished Portal.

What a well put together game. Too bad the best level is the last one. Can't wait for sequels or mods to get ahold of this stuff.

And that ending....lol....best I have seen in a while even if it was pretty simplistic I laughed.

:lol :lol at the part in Ep2 where
youre at the 2nd cache with the grabbable floor, I couldnt figure it out so I went all the way back to the buildings and got some boxes and barrels and stacked them up until I could jump to the top. Took me like 20 mins. The beauty of physics.

And the end...
I KNEW I WASNT GOING TO GET TO GO ON THE BOREALIS! DAMN DAMN DAMN. I've been so excited to get on the ship ever since it was leaked so many years ago. Any idea what it actually is/does and why we need to kill it? The connection to portal isn't too clear yet. I must say though the G-man speech was downright chilling. I replayed that so many times. What great voice acting. Same with the very end too. I was actually really sad...

And do not judge EP2 until you've beaten it. Coming away from it, I liked it even more than I liked HL2. Still not as good as HL1 or Opposing Force for that matter. All you people who are just getting into HL2, buy HL1 and OpFor on Steam for $10 or whatever. It's unbeilievably worth it. They hold up really well, and you can't give a "crap computer" excuse.

The overall feel of HL2:EP2 is what I expected for original HL2. I finally got what I wanted. It was definitely a lot more satisfying than ep1. I hope ep3 comes out in less than 12 months.

edit: took me a total of 6.1 hours to finish even when I looked around for e-eggs.

This is my first time through HL2, and I have a couple early game questions -

1) I never got this achievement:

What cat?
Break the mini-teleporter in Kleiner's lab.

I've gotten the other "progress the story" achievements, but I went right through this sequence of the game and it never came up. Have other people gotten it? Is it broken?

2) I never got the mounted gun for my airboat. The boat lady told me it was in a red barn just a bit ahead, but the barn just had some headcrab zombies in it, and a cache of health/ammo I could cut loose. Do you not get the gun till later? I think I'm getting close to the end of the boat section...

Many of the achievements are optional things you can do messing around in the enviroment. The first one you mention can be done in Red Letter Day, but isn't a requirement to progress.

The second one, yes, occurs later. And if this is your first time through HL2, I wouldn't read the ach.- they kinda spoil some stuff.

How do you break it, then? I read the achievements in advance because its VERY unlikely I'll play through the game a 2nd time, so I'm trying to nab most of them.

God fucking damnit!! The same bug that killed G-mans speech (everything running at 2fps) in Ep2 has struck with the ending sequence!

The game play in Ep2 is pretty stale, its just the same shit that was in HL2, I'm ONLY playing for the awesome story and characters and now I can't even experience that! Fuck you valve! I'm seriously pissed, I slogged through one repetitive encounter after another just to get more of the story and I don't even get to see what the fuck is going on with anything. Seriously this is the worst Half-Life experience I have ever had.

Anyone that actually has a working fucking version care to enlighten me as to what the hell is going on at the end?

I knew there was a reason I gave up on PC gaming, what a shitshow.

Well remember achievements weren't originally in Half Life 2. Just forget about them, enjoy the game.

Gimme a break. I *know* the game didn't originally have achievements, silly.

I happen to like achievements, and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to earn them, whether the game ORIGINALLY had them or not.

If you have an nvidia card, have you tried out these beta drivers?
http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_rel70betadriver.html

They feature "improved compatibility" with Episode Two.

Well, to get the achievement for "What Cat?" I just messed around with mini-teleporter thing in Kleiner's lab, putting a whole bunch of random crap in it until it broke.

You can easily get to that area from the beginning of "Red Letter Day", in the chapter select menu.

I'm 9 hours in and just got to Anticitizen One. That prison level sure was long and hard. I was barely scrapping by with my health in the red through most of the parts where you have the ant lions with you.

I really like the atmosphere of the game. I could totally believe that this world has been largely uninhabited and not taken care of in years.

And I really love those moments when you meet up with Alyx after being separated for so long. I really am glad to see her.

I still cannot get over how much excellent content is packed into this one package!

Kinda ridiculous when you think about it. :lol

How easy is it to play with friends in TF2 on XBL? Can you party up then join a server?

I'm debating between the Xbox and PC version of Orange Box, but I can't decide. If I can't really play with friends on Xbox, I'll probably just go PC.

Also, has anyone done a content comparison? Is the Xbox version identical to the PC version except for graphical detail?

Xbox servers are capped at 14 or 16 players can't remember.
People complaining about slowdown and lag and some other grahics issues. Game is capped at 30fps. Not sure how easy it is to get with friend and play..

but its easier and faster paced on a PC.

Well if they really run with
the Portal connection and are not just namedropping Aperture Science, then the Borealis probably is holding a larger version of the ASPHD. The Combine would want it so they can open another rift. Dr. Kleiner was probably thinking about using it to send the Combine back. But Eli Vance knows better. It would be just safer to destroy the technology so no one uses it and just slowly whittle away what remains of Combine forces on Earth.

The game didn't really pick up for me until
G-Man shows up
. Up until that point it just felt like I'm retreading old ground. But from that point on the game was great.

OK, Portal is just about the coolest thing I've played in a long time...but I'm concerned with its length. Yes, I know it's short as hell, but there only appears to be 3-4 more chapters left in the game and, according to my save, I've only played for 38 minutes. :\

Are the listed chapters REALLY all the game offers? Maybe I will have to buy the PC version as well if good mods show up...

Yeah, right now TF2 is sometimes unplayable on XBL. Hopefully a patch will rectify some of the net issues they're having.

I have to concur.....at least when I play a match with above 12 players

...fucking UNPLAYABLE!!!

Don't worry, most people are taking around 2.5 hours up to 4 hours. I think I took about 3 hours myself. I remember someone saying that they did it in under 2 hours, but that was only one person. Plus, after the game, there is the advanced levels and challenges, but I haven't tried those yet.

Can anyone point out to me where
G-Man is in the area where you have to go get the car?
. I listened to the commentary track for that area and it said
He was there, but I couldn't locate him

Man, I really hadn't budgeted this game into my upcoming purchases just yet, but that CC $37.99 deal for the definitive version was too good to pass up!

When Alyx points out that she can see the car, you can see G-Man walking on the bridge towards your side.

The game is $38 at CC? I just bought it there for $60 on Wednesday...

Whoa, playing through HL2 now. Um, the graphics look worse than I remember. Some of the textures are appalling. I just played it on my PC this summer and it didn't look like this.

It's more like a 50/50 chance of lagging or running smoothly. I had 1 match where the game lagged pretty badly, especially when the rockets came flying out. I had 2 that ran with slight hiccups yet still very playable, and 3 that ran smoothly.

Is the lag caused by the host, or is it maybe because of the fact that you can drop in on the game midmatch? Or maybe the live spectator mode that they have? Im hoping this gets resolved quickly because this game is so much fun when its at full speed.
