"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

So those ending credits in Portal, should I see them before, after, or whenever I finish HL2:Episode 1, and Episode 2?
You should see them after you beat Portal ... other than that, go for it.

Tried reading through this monster-in-training of a thread, but couldn't really find the answers I was looking for:

1) 360 framerate okay? Especially Half-Life 2, I mean, is this miles better than the Xbox1 port? And the graphics are nice?
2) how is TF2 running on Live?

1) The framerate is fine to the point where it's not even an issue. It's like a completely different world compared to the original Xbox1 port. Graphically, HL2 on the 360 is a mixed bag. The orginal game is showing its age and the textures could be a little sharper but with epsiode 1 Valve did their homework and visuals are substantially improved -textures, lighting, facial animation...you name it. Episode 2 is even better and infact it's downright gorgeous to look at. Seriously, there are moments in that game that are just stunning.

The loading (both in length and frequency) is on par with the PC version.

3) I haven't played TF2 since the patch but before that...um...yeah. Not that great. But again, Valve did release a patch that supposedly corrected alot of the lag issues.

1) The framerate is really solid. I never noticed any slowdown during my 20+ hours of gameplay. And yes, it is indeed 'miles' ahead of the Xbox port, it's so good. It has a few low resolution textures here and there, but overall it looks great.

2) Pretty bad. Two out of the three matches I played today had lag to the point where it was unplayable. (moving all over the place, not shooting when you pull the right trigger, etc.) :(

Played some Team Fortress 2 yesterday, first game had horrible lag, then my friend hosted a game and we played lagless with about 12-16 other players for a couple of hours.

I seriously think it's my favorite game of the year right now. (And this is coming from someone who would have rated the original HL2 back when it came out somewhere between 8.5-9.0)

HL2 was good, but not that well paced. Long repetative sections broke the flow.

Episode 2 was just about perfect in every way. Amazing game really

Yeah, I need this game then. Those are my only fears and I guess I can deal with TF2 having lackluster online performance; just because I know Valve is good about patching.

So seriously depending on how well The Orange Box sells on 360...Giving gamers HL2: Episode Three makes sense. And we're getting Left 4 Dead at some point...Deliver us Episode 3, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and CS or DoD: Source! Zomg full of win package two.

Oh and I have to comment on my love for the HL2 soundtrack. It's a lot different from other games and it really gets the atmosphere across and always gets your blood pumping. Great stuff.

I bought the game on thursday. It is probably the best video game i have ever purchased. I finished portal and it was amazing, not what i expected at all. I also just finished half life 2 for the first time and it was so good. Way better then i ever expected. I would always hear pc gamers talk about how good it was and how halo always overshadows it, but this is way better then halo campaign. The characters are so good. i cant stop playing it.

Haha, I just finished Portal! This package just keeps on giving! How wrong I was about this game. Credits made the game, I don't know if thats even possible :D

This was just right amount of portal making goodness. If the game would have been 6 hours, I think it would have gotten boring... maybe :)

the Team Fortress lag issues seem to have been worked out. I played some last night and again today and had no problems whatsoever. Now that i played it its a blast. Just wish there was a bit more variety to the maps. Maybe a map pack down the road?

I'm playing through the entire Half-Life series right now, so far I finished HL1 Source, Opposing Forces, and Blue Shift. Gearbox did a pretty damn good job, especially with OF. I also enjoy all the little touches from HL1 like seeing Gordon riding by in the tram, or seeing him being dragged off by the 2 soldiers in Blue Shift. I hope we see another game with Adrian Shephard one day, the forgotten Half-Life hero.

Now time to replay HL2!

I'm sure others have mentioned this before, but I just noticed that in Half Life 2, the
generator core in the city square which Alyx have to deactivate the shields for
is the same
as the Aperture energy ball in
Portal.

Nice little "ooooooh" moment. :lol

Well, they're used quite a lot as generic energy balls throughout the end of Half Life 2/all of the Episodes. It's not clear whether they're supposed to be the same in Portal or Valve just reused art assets.

i just got through ravenholm, how are into the game am i? that damn level was survival horror! kept running out of bullets and those monsters who throw the super head leeches are bullshit. if they bite you, you die!? come on!

You're about a third in.

You have to utilize your environment (read: the gravity gun) quite a bit. I had no trouble with bullet management in that level.

But yeah, those venom headcrab/zombies were ridiculously annoying. Be sure to maintain plenty of space between you and it.

No...if they bite you you go down to 1 health from a neuro toxin and quickly regenerate as your suit heals you. They're not nearly as unforgiving as it seems, since you never have to fight anybody with projectile weapons when you see one of those things.

I think they're supposed to be high energy strings. HL2 came out around the time that string theory was gaining some mainstream notoriety(Mossman even gave a little quip about how their teleportation worked that sounded like it was right out of The Elegant Universe). Also, they're the same as what are shot from the combine rifle and the image for the alternate fire looks like a tiny little loop of string. So....

So I started playing EP2

and I said

"AM I HEARING THE FUCKING CANDYMAN?"
Tony Todd FTMFW. Also, I remarked earlier in the thread that while playing Episode 2, there was a part where the frame rate chugged a bit
during the Strider attack on the rocket where you have to take them out with the Strider busters
Weird thing is that happened on a day where the 360 was on for a pretty long while, over 6 hours. Just the other day though, when I finished Episode 2, I went through that same part and I had no problems. Weird.... Anyway, the Orange Box is one hell of a package. Now I hope the PS3 version is just as good (like I've said before, playing on a borrowed 360).

Just finished Episode Two. So now I've finished HL2, Episode One, and Episode Two consecutively. Through the first few hours of HL2 I wasn't enjoying myself that much but after things pick up, they never slow down. Awesome stuff. Both gameplay wise, atmosphere wise, storyline wise, and definitely plot wise and character development wise.

My only complain is
the way Episode Two ended. Didn't exactly leave me feeling good for finishing it. Regardless looking forward to Episode Three now quite a bit and I've gained a lot more respect for the Half-Life series.

Now onto Portal!

Should I have finished Half Life 2 to play this? Story wise

Yes. Episode 1 continues directly after HL2 and Ep 2 continues directly after Ep 1. You would have no idea what the hell is going on.

Portal and Team Fortress dont require you to play HL2 though.

Oh shiza, sorry, I was talking about Portal. Thank you bro, gonna hop on it now. I thought they were connected some how in terms of story

Portal is connected to HL2 in that there's a plot point about Apeture Science in Episode 2. It looks like it'll play a much bigger role in the HL storyline in Episode 3 and the subsequent Portal games (according to the director commentary).

I'd recommend playing Portal before Episode 2. The 'impact' of the connection will be stronger.

Just beat HL2 (for the first time).

Are episodes 1 & 2 combined shorter, longer, or equal-length compared to HL2? Took me just over 10 hours to get through HL2...

Probably equal length for you. Ep 1 is about 4 hours and Ep 2 is about 6 hours.

Shorter. Episode 1 just kind of flys by and while Episode 2 is longer it's still probably only 5-7hrs, depending on how good you are. I found ep 2 to be alot harder. Infact, imo it contains the hardest parts in any HL game so far.

How long is the first Half Life? Ineed to play through that before HL2, HL2 Ep 1, and HL2 Ep 2 >_>

Took me 11 hours to beat when i replayed it last week, so I'm guessing the average is around 10 hours.

You really don't need to play the original HL to understand what's going on in HL2 'cause it's not like the first one explains a hell of alot. You'd probably be better off just reading a brief snyopsis of it online.

Finished Portal. Fantastic game. Great game mechanics and story humor. Unfortunately, I had a glitch in Puzzle 19, which kept me running around in confusion for hours. I was in a hallway that dead-ended, so I just wandered around looking for what I'd missed doing. Finally, I reloaded an old save and when I went to that same cul-de-sac, it now opened up into another room!

I love the song at the end. Any of the cheesy/popular bands the kids today listen to (Good Charlotte, Fallout Boy, and their ilk) couldn't hurt themselves by releasing a cover version.

I've found several glitches in the game, all during the last level as well. I played it yesterday and created a portal near a vent that I needed to crawl into (right after you meet the first rocket turret) and I ended up falling out of the level entirely. I just kept falling in a loop so I had to reload an old save.

Agreed. I beat Ep1 in 2hr 52min, and Ep2 in 4hr 22min. Episode 2 was by far more enjoyable, and challenging. Not to mention Ep2 has enough plot points to make your head spin.

Ep2's end is frustrating, and I know I'm not the only one that thinks it. I could have done with it being slightly shorter.

Have any of you attempted the "advanced" stages on Portal yet? Jesus, some of these are pretty damn hard. I'm finding the momentum ones to be the most troublesome for me, because while I may be looking one way on my first portal, I get completely flipped around backwards when I go through the receiving portal and my sense of where I'm looking at is completely gone. When you're trying to move a portal you're going through at a super fast speed to a higher spot to advance through the level, it's extremely difficult to move it when you don't really know where you're looking. :lol

The advanced stages were pretty damn easy with the exception of one or two (the one with the turrets on the various platforms over the acid pit comes to mind).

And I have to say.

Driving in Half-Life games is probably the worst gaming experience I ever had.

Also, I never understood why the Half-Life 2 poster was with Gordon Freeman walking in snow, but now I see.

They better release Ep 3 on XBL.
