"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Driving in Half-Life games is probably the worst gaming experience I ever had.

Also, I never understood why the Half-Life 2 poster was with Gordon Freeman walking in snow, but now I see.

They better release Ep 3 on XBL.

I don't think that's snow. Unless you meant a different pic?

Really? I mean, wouldn't it be a little too big for a majority of the Xbox 360 owners to download it from the Marketplace? There's still a lot of the story left to tell, and I can see it easily being as long, if not longer, than Episode 2 is.

could share a lot of assets with half-life 2/ep1/ep2. i don't know how much that would cut the download size, but they were doing it with tomb raider anniversary 360, iirc

Has anybody tried the advanced Portal challenges? The gold medal portal limits are really difficult to wrap your head around. 2 portal limits wtf?

No, not at all. It'd be like Shivering Isles or Tomb Raider Anniversary. File size isn't really a problem when it comes to downloadable stuff like that. Hell, XBL has demos that approach 2 gigs.

True. I wonder how big, in terms of file size, Episode 2 is..

File sizes of Orange Box components according to Steam:

Half-Life 2 - 841mb
Episode One - 606mb
Episode Two - 1338mb
Portal - 985mb
Team Fortress 2 - 1379mb

Total - 5149mb

Wow, it's a lot smaller than what I thought it was. Episode 3 probably wouldn't be too big for most people to download off the Marketplace, after all.

The Xbox 360 version of Half-Life 2 and Episode One will probably be a few hundred MB bigger because they have graphical updates that Episode Two already has built in. The total size of the Xbox 360 version is probably close to 6000mb.

Ok I started playing HL² and I'm enjoying it even more than the first time actually. First time I played ² was on pc, but it had trouble running the large open areas in, what was it, Highway 17? So I quit there. Anyway it's good to be back. I read that some people find the original HL² to be graphically outdated a bit, but it still holds up for me. Driving the motorboat through the open areas in Water Hazard is insanely atmospheric, especially while looking at the water, sun and buildings in the distance. Textures and other technical stuff aren't that important to me, as long as the visuals actually invoke something in the mind of the player. That's certainly the case with HL² I think. Same with ICO. PS2 game, graphically dated theoretically, but oh so beautiful.
That water level is built up so well, because at the end when you finally get to take down that chopper, it actually feels rewarding since the bastard was such a pain in the ass for a long time.

The one nitpick complaint I had while playing it several years ago returns: I wanted to see Gordon's hands on the handlebars of the motorboat! Still can't get over it, looks so weird.

Right now I'm in Ravenholm, going for the Grav gun only nerdpoint.

Another brownie point for Valve: good achievement integration into the game! I think that every game should have an in-game achievement menu and those progress bars are a nice touch too. My only complaint is that there's a collectathon achievement again (the Lambda points) and when you miss some... It would've been nice if it showed how many were in each level, so you knew what to replay. Right now I may have to use a guide if I want to get the achievement and see where I could've missed one.

Just a shout out to my fellow Aussies (and presumably all PAL territories?) we finally get Orange Box this week!!! FINALLY!

Turns out its region free but it sold out too quick at Play-Asia. 3 more sleeps until we get our hands on the best value gaming box of all time.

Seriously after playing through HL2, Episode One, and Episode Two I really really want Episode Three on 360. I would definitely buy an "Orange Box 2" with various games including HL2: Episode Three. Throw in CS: Source and I'm game.

I always like the driving in Half-Life 2, even the airboat which a lot of people seemed to have a problem with. However, driving around in the car in Episode 2 and and switching between looking at where I was going and the radar in the car showing where the striders were moving was kind of dizzying. I know Valve likes to use in-game items instead of on-screen radars to show you what is going on but that whole sequence wasn't as enjoyable as I thought it would have been from the videos that were released last summer.

Also I don't think that poster had snow it, it's just City 17 cinder (say that 17 times fast).

Figuring out the size of source games is not as easy as it seems. The Ep 2 content is about 1.4 gigs but that's not all the game uses. The Source material, engine, model, etc. files total another 4 gigs for me. The 2007 ones are another 1.4 gigs.

It isn't out yet? I walked into my local JB Hi-Fi yesterday and it was on the shelves. Picked it up for $80, I was totally unprepared for the moment. Maybe they broke the street date?

Melbourne. Im not sure if its a nationwide thing or just my particular store selling it early, but according to their online store it came out on the 18th? Hopefully you find a copy!

I just got done running through Portal and the Episodes with commentary on and loved it. Really shows the care put into these games. I wish other developers could do something akin to this.

As such, I was wondering- how is the HL2 book "Raising the Bar?" I was kind of wishing for a HL2 commentary after finishing the others, but I knew they started implementing those after HL2, so I wasn't surprised to see it missing. Would "Raising the Bar" provide what I'm looking for?

Alyx was stabbed through the chest. She probably died due to the damage and/or blood loss, but they were still there. When you're stabbed you don't 'lose' organs. :D

Yes, it's out of print but you can find it easily on the web. You even have scanned scribbled notes from the level designers of the game so it's a pretty thorough guide to the making of Half-Life and its sequel.

Shit I just called EB and the dude was like "what suburb? I can get them fined" etc etc. I live in Port Macquarie in NSW and there is no JB HiFi here unfortunately. I would never tell them the suburb dont worry - I found it strange though as he said it was VERY strictly street dated for the 25th and that they(JB) could be fined 1.5million.

Anyway, good for you on getting it early man. Only 3 more nights to wait isnt so bad I guess.

EDIT: JB werent selling the US ntsc version were they? Its possible they were as its region free...

As far as I can tell its the PAL version, it has OFLC badging and the like. I guess I got lucky in that they didn't get the memo in regards to the delay?

And woah, Portal sure is amazing. Worth the price of entry alone. :lol

You're in for the treat of the season as far as I'm concerned. I actually finished Portal today. I played through Half Life 2 and all the Episodes first. I absolutely loved it. I've seen some people say that graphically, Half Life 2 looks a bit dated but to me, it looks damn good. I've always loved the art style more than say (and I'm not trying to troll) Halo. That's probably why it doesn't really look dated to me. And it runs like a dream on 360.

Oh Im so so very excited for this. I only played HL2 once and that was the inferior Xbox version(was ok, I know). So to be able to sit down and play HL2 then Ep1 then Ep2 without waiting - on my HDTV - then play Portal.... fucking heaven.

Portal is officially my game of the year. I feel like a smart cookie every time I complete a puzzle!

I wouldn't be so quick to suck your own dick just yet. It's not like there's a lot of actual puzzles in Portal. 90% of the game is just training you how to play it.

I totally agree. I don't hold it against the game, because this was its first outing and it succeeded quite incredibly at delivering on its concept, but, yeah, that fact is one of the few reasons I'm not proclaiming "GOTY!!!" in the streets like everyone else. (And, yes, I've played the advanced stages and challenges)

that's an interesting argument, but 95% of other games' entireties aren't nearly as interesting as what you're categorizing as portal's tutorial

Well, like I said, it's not really a flaw. I think I just ended up plain enjoying other games more.

Hmm that's actually not far from the truth. Up until stage 14 iirc I thought I was playing Portal: the tutorial. 15 was the first stage to give me some situations where I had to think more than a minute. The post 19 segments didn''t provide any new stuff either. I do have to play the advanced maps though, I hear at least some of those are pretty hard.

Continued in HL², where I just reached Highway 17. From here on out it's all new for me, so I'm excited to see what comes next.

Grav gun only in Ravenholm was surprisingly easy! Just keep running and circlestrafing on rooftops. In some tight situations I didn't use it all actually

1) The framerate is fine to the point where it's not even an issue. It's like a completely different world compared to the original Xbox1 port. Graphically, HL2 on the 360 is a mixed bag. The orginal game is showing its age and the textures could be a little sharper but with epsiode 1 Valve did their homework and visuals are substantially improved -textures, lighting, facial animation...you name it. Episode 2 is even better and infact it's downright gorgeous to look at. Seriously, there are moments in that game that are just stunning.
Huh, for some reason I thought that all of HL2 in the Orange Box was using Ep 2's upgraded visuals :(

I barely cant stand HL2 on on the other hand after playing Portal. Im early in though.

Is it just me, or does Magnusson seem to have something other than the safety of the earth on his agenda? There's a line in Ep2 suggesting that he might've put something on the rocket - but what?

O_O

Why? They're not even really comparable in terms of gameplay, so it's not like Portal is some super-evolved version of HL.

And, like I've said before, I was never one of those "HL is the best game evar!" people before, (and I played 2 back when it came out) but Ep. 2 just hits all the right spots for me. It's easily the best portion of the Orange Box to me.
