"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Just throwing this out there. Anyone new to the series, needs to go play the original Half Life, Blue Shift, and most importantly Opposing Force. I might make an Opp Force thread when I get off work later, but jesus. I had to restart over at a section, because of low health, but, I finally got to the end. Its one of the greatest shooters ever. Worlds Collide, is just damned awesome. It needs a sequel more than anything. :(

I think I might restart HL, and play that until I get the Orange Box.

Dude! Honestly, you can kind of skip on Blue Shift (Barney's story. Kinda explains how he had a spare crowbar in HL2, heh), but, Opp Force is pretty good. There is just something special about using a barnacle as a grappling hook.

I have to play it on hard, but, someone said something about fighting Invisible black ops guys. :(

Story wise, they are cannon until they mix with whatever valve does.

I've read up on a lot of the Half-Life story plots, but I definitely want to play through Half-Life and it's expansions at least once. I may end up picking them up sometime this Holiday season...if I can find them, that is.

Edit: Nevermind, I can definitely "find" them. I just opened Steam and found a neat little package that includes "Half-Life, Half-Life Blue Shift, Opposing Force, and Team Fortress classic for a super cheap price. Looks I'll be getting it soon. ;)

Are the expansions included on the Xbox version?

Wow. You're telling us that you didn't enjoy playing through Nova Prospekt or fighting in the streets of City 17? Craziness...
It was mixed. There were plenty of enjoyable segments during the final half of the game, but there were too many tedious moments mixed in for my taste. Nova Prospekt was initially interesting, but I grew weary of the defense bits and the generally tight hallways. All of the tight corridor running in the latter areas really didn't appeal to me for some reason. On the other hand, some of the larger battles (striders) and the more open locations were pretty great.

I enjyoed every segment leading up to Sandtraps while I only enjoyed, perhaps, 50-60% of the gameplay following it. I'm looking forward to going through it again, however. I finished everything else on the Orange Box (360) and am up to Sandtraps on HL2. I'm interested to see if I end up enjoying these latter segments more this time around (especially considering that I really haven't spent too much time replaying them). I'm basing my opinion on how I felt about the game in 2004.

Opposing Force is as good if not better than the original HL from a gameplay standpoint. It's more challenging and is pretty much non-stop action and awesome from start to finish. Blue Shift is slower and shorter, wouldn't really say it's necessary for anyone but a hardcore HL fan to play. But anyone who's played HL NEEDS to play OpFor.

Seems like retailers have 12/11 for the PS3 release.

Are they really going to wait that long? Their marketing/hype will be completely dried up by that point.

*Insert obligatory negative PS3 comment here*

Ahem, well maybe Sony shouldn't have made such a complex device!

+1 for OF. I remember being really, pleasantly surprised when it came out. The squad dynamic really clicked for me.

Finished Portal (great), played some Episode 2 (looking good so far) on 360. Not really feeling the pad that much. Miss my kb/ms set up.

God is it ever pretty though.:D

Just went through 5 advanced Portal maps in one run. So awesome! The stages definitely get more interesting (
droids in cages, companion ball
). The last stage is very difficult though, I'm stuck on the third jump and it's quite frustrating because you need to do very precise jumps.

When you say last, you mean advanced chamber 18? Yeah that's pretty tough.

Yes 18. I'm at the jumps in the beginning and it's hard. No room for error, lots of acid to fall into. Damn.

Ok I beat all advanced maps, yay. What sucks though is when I restarted the game to get the last one and the achievement, the counter said I'd only beaten 4! The only reason I could find that caused this, is that I left the game using the xbox menu button and not the 'quit portal' option. Bah, I had to replay some tough rooms again. Anyway after that I tried some challenges, but man they seem daunting. There's this one level where the portal limit for a gold medal was set to 2, and you had to complete 2 different tasks (a level where you have to get a helper cube down and guide a power ball to a hole). I looked around that level and I honestly couldn't wrap my head around it. The time challenges are insane too. I did this run where I thought I'd get silver for sure, but I wasn't even close to Bronze. Challenging.
The main Portal game may be close to 4 hours in length, but Valve actually delivered on the replay value too. Orange box is such an amazing package. I spent all my gaming time of the weekend in it and I've only touched Portal and the original HL².

Uhh...no.
The airboat ride was one of the best parts of the game.

Here, let me summarize it in a list:

Good things about HL2:
1) Gravity gun
2) Supporting characters
3) Airboat ride
4) Antlion bait (though it's only used once)
5) Citadel infiltration

Bad things about HL2:
1) Squads
2) All weapons except the shotgun, magnum, and MK2 secondary fire
3) Ambushes (Zombies, rollermines, etc.)
4) Overwatch Nexus fight
5) Highway 17

Oh man, you definitely need to check out Episode 1 and Episode 2! They're so good. Episode 2 more so than Episode 1, but nonetheless they're both extremely good. I actually found both Episodes to be even better than Half-Life 2 itself.

WTF is up with those portal challenges? Getting bronze seems like an impoosible task i cant even fucking imagine gold. Note to Valve: DONT make your high score goals the same as the score of your lead elite testers.

I beat all the Portal advance maps and the I've started on the challenges. The "Least Portals" challenges aren't that hard at all, but "Least Steps" is killing me.

That was my favorite part of HL2 actually, mainly because it nailed that isolated atmosphere.

I cant find this game (360) anywhere in Vancouver.

Why is it in such small supply?
took me two weeks to find my copy too ( victoria) I think I was just at the right EB at the rigth time whne I got mine. I think the game is bigger than most retailers realized and many underordered. some shops I hit were sayiing they got as little as 6 copies. I hit about 30 stores over the two weeks and so far it looks like it was worth it :)

Been busy with life and haven't played Orange Box in like 5 or 6 days. I really really have a craving now after reading this thread to go back and finish up the assload of content on that wonderful disc.

Oh. my. god. I've said it in another thread, and I'm going to say it again. I freakin' love Team Fortress 2! I just finished playing seven or eight games, and it's so much fun. I decided to run with the Medic Class last night/this morning to see how well I would like it. To my surprise, I actually like being a Medic. I felt like I was really contributing to the team, instead of just being a sideline guy that heals someone every once in a while. The Needle SMG = awesomeness. It feels so good to maul someone down with it, especially a heavy. :lol

Same. It's so well done and convincing, but in a subtle, realistic kind of way. Looks like something you'd see on an abandoned/urban exploration website with all those ghost towns.

Medic Melee is deadly as hell, too.

I haven't been able to use/land a melee hit yet, unfortunately. I know the Spy's switchblade (I think that's what they use) is really powerful, though. They get me every time.

Yeah, I have to wonder about that as well.

In all honesty, that was one of my favorite sections of the game. It's the later stuff of HL2 (from Sand Traps onward) that I found less enjoyable. The first half of the game was incredible and the air boat played a nice role in that.

Wow, I should stop playing.

Im at the airboat part, just had he chopper come after me.

Ive found the entire playtime so far vey bring and plodding. Im happy it seems that others find the gunplay kinda last gen.

spoiled by halo?? yeah.

Eh yeah I know but I have to get through HL² first since I never actually beat it :p They're high up on my to do list

Hello.

I'm on Highway 17 now and I'm stuck. I reached this dock sort of place, and I just used the crane to knock down the little bridge that makes you go to the other side, but I kill all the combine and then I reach the road, but it's blocked from the other side so I can't use my vehicle to get through there onto that road, so do I just go on foot?

Although I can host 16 player games just fine, there are still some frustrating bugs that need to be addressed...

1) SFX stop working
2) Hangups when returning to the lobby to select what map we're going to play next

Also, at one time it looked like I was lagged, couldn't do anything, controller wasn't responding etc. Apparently, rest of the server were doing fine, no lag whatsoever. Game crashed after the rounds finished though. Other than that, great experience.

Use the crane on the buggy

Two step process...

First, use the crane on the buggy so it sits on the platform just over the bridge then enter the small building, kill the combine, and flip the switch in the room to the far back left. That will open a gate in the same building allowing you to continue with your buggy.

I played HL2 when it first came out on PC in 2004 and I was waiting for this compilation to come out. What a package! I just finished HL2 once again to be able to "feel" the story when I will begin the Episodes.

However, I don't feel as excited in Ep1 yet. It starts kinda slow, hopefully it's gonna pick up a bit!

Portal is a blast, I should try the advanced levels sometime and I haven't touched TF2 yet. I have so many multiplayer games to play (Halo3, Wowhawk)!!!

I just got through city 17 (Im entering the giant blue tower thingy now) and WOW what a rush. Those giant tripod looking things are a blast to kill.. especially the rooftop battle.

Also, dog is awesome.. too powerfull to hang out with for too long though since he just jacks everything for you.

I think HL2 is coming to an end quickly, and it looks like its going to avoid any Xen levels of stupidity at the end to boot. Looking forward to Ep1 and Ep2.

I will say, I think the end of this game skews too much into a straight shooter. Much more than the first half life did. I also think I missed the "crane puzzle" everyone talks about unless its still coming up. I had a few puzzles with cranes (the car thingy) but they werent that great.

also, the room with the giant claw things that cant see but only hear you in hl1 is unmatched by the sequal. It does alot of great stuff, but that is still one of the most tense moments in gaming history. Especially when you had to continue backtracking through there.

Part of the problem is Ive played through 3 HL games at this point (HL1 + expansions) so I figured out their puzzles. When I dont see an obvious path now I just look for pipes to jump on to get somewhere. If this was my first HL I would probably be stuck all the time trying to figure out what to do still. Now I just run and gun.

Still no patch for the 360 version. Finished half life 2, ep 1, ep 2, portal, and now i just want to play TF2 with no lag issues. Hopefully tomorrow the patch will be up but i kind of doubt it.

Enable subtitles.
Do the subtitles mix with the normal dialog? I've found that using the commentary with Portal is extremely annoying due to the fact that GlaDOS loves to talk so often. When the two tracks mix together it becomes difficult to hear the commentary...
