I played just great with the guys from Valve on Friday evening. It ran smooth as butta.

Maybe the servers you played on had shit for upload bandwidth.

If i get lucky some games I join have no lag, but it would be nice to have it fixed or just block people with shitty connections from being able to host 16 player games.

Do the subtitles mix with the normal dialog? I've found that using the commentary with Portal is extremely annoying due to the fact that GlaDOS loves to talk so often. When the two tracks mix together it becomes difficult to hear the commentary...

No not with the subtitles.
And I'm using subtitles sadly. Maybe this is just for 480i users, but there paragraphs long, sometimes in big letters. Its to distracting, it would have been better if I could have just turn down the game and music volume and have a commentary volume. And I know I should have a HDTV by now, I wish I was rich. I'm getting the 42 1080p Sharp Aquos hopefully this Christmas!

Not OB related but didn't want to make a new thread asking this. Does anyone have the PS2 version of the original HL? I'm playing through it on the PC now but my PC sucks as does my monitor so I'd prefer to get the PS2 version but have 2 questions. How are the controls mapped to the controller and how long are the load times?

I thought my mind was playing tricks on me the first time but, I saw this again last night. Alyx definitely winked at me while we were in the car...

Happened to me twice - once in each play through.

The First time was when you had to ramp off that part of the road. I lined up the car, reversed it, and then looked over at her and she winked at me. Second time was in the area where you first get the car, before you go down the tunnel.

my tale- had never played half-life before(i know i know, can't call myself a gamer)

im somewhere in that area as well. Not sure if I'm playing the game correctly though. Every battle that I've encountered with the soldiers, I tend to just run right through them and go to the next section. I only shoot them if they get in my way. Is this correct? Or am I supposed to gun them down a la Halo 3?

If so then bravo Valve. I feel like Arnold in Running Man.

Well the beginning of the game is supposed to make you feel like you're being chased or hunted (because, well, you are). Things will settle down after that.

uhhhh- those annoying ass headcrabs that jump out of the ground

busting off jumps in the vehicle is sweet

i don't remember all that much- it was late...

For people playing it for the first time on PC and experiencing motion sickness, don't forget to change the field of the view in the console.

Just enable the console with -console in the command line in Steam's Half Life 2 icon, and use default_fov 90 to switch to the more bearable field of view (to me at least).

Got my Grey Matter and Nemesis achievements in Team Fortress 2 tonight. Pretty fun game. Wish I had some friends -life to play it with. Always more fun that way. If anyone from GAF wants to play some TF2, 360 version feel free to send me an invite. RyoGCH is my GT.

I'm so glad this collection came to the 360. I only played HL2 on PC one-time through when it was originally released, and I really loved, but it was great to play it again, along with EP 1 and 2 all in one go.

What a great, immersive story. It was interesting to go straight from Halo 3, which I played through twice, right into HL2. All I can say is, playing through HL2 after Halo 3 (which I liked quite a bit), really makes Halo 3's blemishes stand-out.

Bravo VALVe.

Well, to give the game a go again, started playing Portal last night for about an hour or so, damn cool game, had a paper due, plus work at 5:30 or I would have played more. The cute little
death droids
are friggen awesome. Anyone else get a Paranoia (the tabletop RPG) vibe from this game?

Tonight I popped HL2 in, I had beaten it on PC like 2 years ago. Anyhow, as I'm replaying, some things hit me, the opening area is still damn cool, I still hate the fact that Gordon is mute, (or at the very least more able to interact with people.) and the early combat is worse than I remember. Still the train, and Dr. Breen talking are still a great way to open the game.

One thing that hits me on replaying, is that I really don't like the design of the whole canal area. It just takes me out of the reality of the game when I have to do fairly ridiculous stuff just to get from point A to point B. The seesaw puzzle, and the room that you have to flood the room by jumping across a bunch of pipes just seems silly. I mean
how the hell does a normal person traverse these areas?

Will give more second impressions as I play more, I know some of the cooler areas are coming up,
The abandoned base, and of course the citadel thingie.
Perhaps I'll finally understand why everyone considers this the best shooter EVAR. We shall see.

10:30 I should be available unless I have a paper or some other class work turn up. I'll be out of work by then at least. I'll try to be there!

listening to the episode 1 commentary track now, and i have trouble understanding why valve does such a good job with its playtesters and other companies don't. the playtesters apparently pick up on some really obvious problems that are changed in h.l. games and left in other games by other devs

time and budget?

I just got my Xbox back from the repair shop. Beat Portal and started on Episode 1. Portal is perfect for the console. Half-Life is not. There's something strange about the movement of the characters that just doesn't correspond well to a controller setup. I'm loving the experience so far, but it's really, REALLY strange/difficult to be playing HL on a controller. I'm pretty sure I don't like that part very much.

I honestly thought EXACTLY the same thing as you. Give it some time, though. After an hour or 2, everything felt very natural for me. I played Orange Box right after Half-Life, and the games control so differently. It will just take a while to get into it.

So I've been playing Portal now up to level 19 and apparently my PC has just about had it. Now whenever I look at a Portal, my computer nearly locks up and restarts itself. What the hell?

Is my video card dying? The game ran fine throughout the rest of the game.

Oh, and I have a Radeon 9700 Pro if that helps.

Finally get my desk top hooked up again and it has been downloading the new games all day. I bought the damn retail copy, why the hell can't I install them from the disc, or is there something I did wrong?

Having so much fun going back through HL2 again. I'm extremely impressed with how sharp and vibrant everything looks in the 360 version. Valve did a wonderful job porting the game and beefing up the visuals, and I have to admit that I'm honestly surprised by how well everything controls on the gamepad.

If I have any gripes at all, it's that the damn squad based level is as boring as I remember it being on the PC. Guess I'm in the minority though, since I've never heard anyone else complain about it.

I would just like to say...

329 GRUBS AUUUUGGGGHHH!!!

Sorry, minor meltdown there. But I'm also busy carrying the gnome, so maybe I'll concentrate on that.

I've played quite alot of matches , and i havent experienced any lagg what so ever so far.
I guess i've been lucky with servers...

The thing that I always found interesting about the Half Life games in general is the way that some people react to the different levels-personally, I adored the run-and-gun, kick some Combine ass gameplay that made up Anticitizen One and "Follow Freeman" more than I did the slower, prodding We Don't Go to Ravenholm..., though I don't loate that latter like some people do. Half Life games are really diverse things, and really do mix up the gameplay as you go through different areas-yeah, you're still shooting, but the things you take into account and the restrictions placed on you due to environment do change the way you play.

I'd also like to say that playing the game with subtitles is really a must-in the action you can miss stuff like the Combine dispatcher making interesting remarks (including the first use of your Overwatch designation-the enormously badass "Anticitizen One") and other things. When I replayed HL2 last weekend I turned them on and it was floored by some of the little bits that I missed along the way.

Such a pain in the ass on the car sections
But I finally made it. Farewell little beard pal

Yeah, I had 328 myself, nothing like walking outside the mines and thinking "fuck!" :lol

Damn Episode 1 was REALLY short. I expected it to go on for another hour or so..

I finished it in 2 hours and 23 minutes..at the end I was like WHAT WAS THAT IT????

Good thing I've got EP2

I don't think a normal person is supposed to travel around in the sewers at all actually. Hence the difficulty in traversing them.

Goddamnit... I'm stuck AGAIN, and this time I'm up against a strider.... and I don't know what to do. It's an old abandoned warehouse near a road with a tunnel and it's just me and the strider... I really don't know where to go, I went to either ends of the tunnels and they're both sealed off so the only place I can stay is in the old abandoned warehouse. I would kill the strider but I've got no rockets left, running out of ammo too. What do I do GAF?

So i just bought Orange Box for the second time - after it ran like shit on my PC.

I think I have my GOTY right here. Portal is awesome – (seriously, best credits ever.), TF2 – while buggy as hell (on 360) is still great fun, but Episode 2 is just absolutely fucking incredible. I think (hope) im only around half way through but everything about it is wowing me just like HL2 did back in the day – but even more so - everything is much more refined and polished.

The pacing in EP2 is just about the best ive seen in any game – Valve have really got this down to a fine art. The way the combat and puzzles slowly build up to incredible mini-battles is just so well done.

Orange Box makes it clearer then ever, Valve are the best developers around today.
