"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

Aaah! I couldn't stand the pressure. I bought the Xbox 360 version of Orange Box. My PC is capable but I want to play the games with all their visual splendor maxed out. Just bought a laptop for school and now I don't have cash to upgrade my rig... ah well, I'll be OK... I guess. But it feels like blasphemy playing a Valve game with a game pad :(

Goddamnit... I'm stuck AGAIN, and this time I'm up against a strider.... and I don't know what to do. It's an old abandoned warehouse near a road with a tunnel and it's just me and the strider... I really don't know where to go, I went to either ends of the tunnels and they're both sealed off so the only place I can stay is in the old abandoned warehouse. I would kill the strider but I've got no rockets left, running out of ammo too. What do I do GAF?

If you are where I think you are - enter the warehouse, make your way to the top floor and you'll find rockets for your rocket launcher. I think you have to traverse some knocked down ceiling to get to the top, but I'm not sure.

Damn Episode 1 was REALLY short. I expected it to go on for another hour or so..

I finished it in 2 hours and 23 minutes..at the end I was like WHAT WAS THAT IT????

Good thing I've got EP2
At least you have The Orange Box...

I mean, imagine how most of us felt last year after Episode 1. Yeah, it was awesome, but it was just as short as you discovered and we had to wait a full year and a half before the next episode would appear...

Ugh, I can't even begin to fathom what that wait must have been like..

And the initial release schedule was something like Ep1 in June 2006, Ep2 in late 2006/early 2007 and then Ep3 by Xmas 2007, was it not? :lol

So true, I can't imagine how pissed I would been if I would have bought Ep1 as a standalone when it first came out and then to find out how short it is.

I'm almost done playing EP2, at least I think I'm in the sixth chapter but I'm like 2 and a half hours in as well. I must be doing something wrong :lol

:lol Yeah, I remember reading something like that.

Hide behind the wall until the strider blows a hole in the wall behind you. Run through it and make your way around the warehouse till you find the rather handy rocket stash.

Blow its ass away.

Alex never does though.

I'd love something like

Gordon? Gordon? Gordooooooooooooooooooooooooooon :(

Anyway I finished EP2 today, much much better than EP1. Can't wait for EP3!!

How many of you think we'll see the Portal gun in Ep3?
I dunno it might happen but what makes me not sure is that they would have to show Gordon (through the portals) which would be the first time to see yourself in the game. If they end up doing it that would be pretty cool seeing yourself as Gordon

It wasn't bad at the time. The disc was selling for $15 at Circuit City, and at the time, we didn't know EP2 was 16 months away.

I was actually excited for the short episodes. I thought Valve was going to lead us to the episodic holy land. ... Not so much.

I thought so too at first, but once you adjust it isn't too bad. Just make sure to crank the sensitivity bar up to about 3/4 max setting.

Quick question, I just downloaded the Half Life 2 demo and don't have any problems running it on my laptop if I mess around with the settings a bit. How much more resource heavy are the other games on The Orange Box as compared to HL2? I don't want to drop the money for it only to realize I can't play some of the games

Just got done with the original HL2 (played it for the first time). WOW, the last two chapters were awesome.
Super Gravity Gun
= greatest gun ever

Just about to start Episode 1, hope it is just as awesome.

PS : I don't feel I missed a thing playing HL2 on 360 pad. It worked beautifully.

Know how you feel. The 360 pad is all I've ever known, and it feels great. I also like how you can completely customize the buttons.

Oh and Ep1 is even better. And Ep2 is even better than that!

If you're where I think you are, you need to make your way upward in the warehouse and traverse some of the beams to find an exit. I could be misunderstanding where you are, though.

I have a question, in particular for those that have finished HL2 on both the 360 and PC.

Not a huge spoiler, but I'll tag it anyway.

How does the scene at the end of Nova Prospekt differ on 360 and PC...the one with the huge numbers of guys that you face and you're given a few turrets to set up. That part was extremely fast paced and quite challenging on the PC, has it been toned down on the 360?

Just played it on 360 last night. Pretty easy.

I found it harder, they added three supply crates in the fourth empty turret dispenser, but the new Episode 2 Combine AI makes them throw grenades more, which can muck up your plans.

I always drag a turret from the last standoff through the level to that point though.

Thanks for the tip! The game arrives tomorrow, and I'm giddy as hell :)

All the games in Orange Box use the same engine as Half-Life 2 but they are enhanced and are much more GPU heavy. If your laptop can't run HL2 maxed out with a high/stable framerate then there's no hope of getting a playable and enjoyable experience out of the rest of the games... and Team Fortress 2 has even higher system requirements, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm on Room 18 of Portal and I have to say...I'm not enjoying myself. Is it challenging? Sure. Does it make you think in new ways? Sure. Is it fun? No. More frustrating then anything. I think it's being vastly overrated.

You're not far enough to judge the game.

If it's frustrating you're doing something wrong.

I uh ... think you may have gone in expecting too much. Either that, or you're just averse to excellence. Sorry, there's just no other explanation.

Room 18 was probably the hardest part of the game. Just hurry up and get past it so you can get on with the awesomeness. Soon you'll look back on it and laugh.

Ohhh you're in that room with all the platforms and all the death goo. Yeah - hardest part of the game, but getting past it is very satisfying.

I'm trying to think of a single moment where the game frustrated me. As much as I love the game, it's not too challenging.

Well, I completed Half-Life 2, thanks a lot for your help everyone, stunning game.

I've started Half-Life 2: Episode One now and I've just got up to the surface.

yes, the complete HL2 experience is incredible. it's going to be interesting when GOTY awards come out since half the game is "old" and that has to be taken into consideration.

and EP1 gets too much hate. I think it's exactly what it should've been.

totally agree. i guess it's not all that interesting to talk about unequivocally loving something, but this whole set is just the bee's knees, and not just from a value perspective. it could be i'm just overly infatuated with valve's design philosophy, but playing something others often call underdeveloped and not enjoyable like episode 1 is still a blast to me--the subtle ways they direct your attention, the creative use of environmental puzzles, character interaction. . . how could you not dig this? so much love and attention goes into every moment and scenario.

I really liked the beginning. It reminded me of some moments in the original game, which was great. Also the whole game is a little more intense than Half-Life 2. The ending was a little disappointment though. But overall, Episode 2 is much better.
