"The Freeman Returns" with The Official Orange Box Thread

This damn gnome is KILLING me. I got the car a bit ago (just had my first
hunter
encounter), and I'm seriously tempted to just leave the damn thing, say "screw it" to the achievement, and just play through the rest of Ep 2.

The problem is I really, really wanted to show my Orange Box love by making it the first (and likely only) game that I 1000 out of 1000. :(:( And it's really unlikely that I'll ever play through Ep 2 again with the gnome if I do it once without... I don't have time for multiple playthroughs of much of anything, really.

Even using the trick to get him lodged in place in the car a few pages back, he's STILL falling out every few turns. Humorous and innovative idea for an achievement Valve, but this is not fun! They seriously should have had an openable trunk or something.

If you're only going to play through it once, forget the gnome. Carrying that guy is a pain in the ass, and shouldn't be the way you experience the game.

I played through Ep 1 for the first/only time and got the one bullet achievement, though!

I beat HL² yesterday and all I have to say is fuuuck how awesome were those last few levels. Not gameplay wise, but just the exposition of the story in that area and
you being carried around the Citadel, like the trainride from HL1 redux
I was seriously in awe after beating the game, so much so that I immediately started Ep 1 and I'm planning to continue and maybe beat it today. The beginning of Ep1 was fantastic too. How can you not love Alyx and Dog after that intro level.

Don't let the quest for an achievement spoil the fun of the game, especially with a first-time playthrough. The gnome achievement is meant to be a pain-in-the-ass harcore fan sort of achievement for losers (like myself) to attempt after initial playthroughs. I will say the one free bullet Episode 1 achievement was kind of fun, but I'd already played it on PC and didn't have to many qualms about the additional challenge on my 360 try.

Agreed. The One Free Bullet was fun, not taxing like the gnome one. Or at least it wouldnt have been if their was a legitemate way of holding it in the dam car.

So what are the - spoiler free! - details of that gnome thing? Is it something you have to carry around the entire game or what? If so, I can see how that may be an annoying achievement indeed.

So I beat Ep. 2. What a tease of a final "level". I was expecting some sort of epic final level, and what do I get? A few scenes with the NPCs and a final scene that Im sure was meant to be dramatic and heartbreaking. Instead I was pissed that Ill have to wait another 2 years.

So, Im at the stalker/hunter fight fest.. holy moley.

Watching the stalkers straight jack buildings is GREAT :lol

Also, I figured out that just running over the hunters with the car then killing the stalkers is the best way to do it. trying to ignore the hunters and just kill the stalker = epic fail.

Im semi stuck on the final encounter (the one where like 5 stalkers are all coming at once)... but I figure I will have ep2 beat tonight.

Then on to PORTAL! (then bioshock)

I remember reading a while back that episode one (or was it HL2?) was originally meant to be set on
the Borealis
. It was awesome how this unfolded in Ep2, and i had a serious "ooooooh shit son!!" moment when i saw
the aperture science logo on the side of the ship in Mossman's transmission.

The Hunters are awesome new enemies, the stand offs against them are built up to so well - especially with the personal element because it feels like your out for revenge on them the whole time and that just helps make the battles more intense.

I'm going back and playing Ep1 again now. I'm not sure whether to go back again and play HL2 because i dont think it can stand up to the quality of the episodes. The shorter, more polished experience of the episodes can't be beaten IMO.

I do find it incredibly annoying that you cant turn on dev commentary on your first playthrough. I played Ep1 on my pc when it came out but on 360 ill have to play it through again in order to get the commentary :(

Yeah, just keep doing what your doing, you got the stategy down.

The last battle was pretty much the only weak point for me in Ep. 2. It's awsome the when you start then it just doesn't seem to ever end. Much like leading the redshirts to the train in Ep. 1 and some spots of HL2. Cool things that just go on too damn long to pad the play time.

I kinda agree, but its alot of fun, so I dont mind so much.

The bad thing about these episodes to me is length. I finished the first one in 2:30 and will most likely finish this one just a hair over 3 hours. Considering these are "expansion" packs thats not bad at all.. my issue is that they keep "restarting" the game. So I start out with just the grav gun and have to work my way back up to a full arsenal. So the game takes the first hour or so getting back up to speed.. then just when it gets back up to end of HL2 levels of awesome it ends quickly. Maybe an 1:00-1:30 hours of really great gameplay.

I didn't think it was a weak point at all - like all the battles it started off slow letting you figure out what you had to do and how to do it, then slowly ramped up and by the end it was just a frenzy of awesome. So satisfying taking down a strider moments before its about to take down the silo.

The only thing that pissed me off about it was the fact i cant drive for shit and getting stuck between trees due to the dodgy driving mechanic (I kept trying to control the car like a warthog :lol )

Finished HL2 and Ep1 this weekend. I loved everything about The Citadel; both the end of HL2 version and the beginning of Ep1 version. It was such a strong, otherworldly setting and so refreshing after the bleak decay of City 17.

Zombie-Combine; a great concept and a damn tough enemy.

Valve is to be commended, especially for making games that stand up to the competition even years later. Don't think I like the episodic format though. It's just not long enough for the story and setting to sit in your head and let you really absorb it over the course of a few days. Had I not been able to play them directly after HL2 it would have felt incredibly disjointed and I don't think you should be obliged to re-play an earlier episode every time the latest segment comes out.

....er...I'm thinking of taking 360 version back to store and trading it for PC version (even though my PC blows at this point)

....reason being, the more and more I play through HL2 (haven't even gotten to Ep1 yet), the more and more uncomfortable it becomes with the 360's analogs. Not to mention I think Valve did a rather marginal job calibrating the controls in general (look response, acceleration, etc...)
Areas that I would go through with ease on PC version, I find myself struggling to get through with a controller
...dunno, maybe the title is just too embedded on my mind with playing on Keyboard/M setup after all these years..... I always still identify it as being a definitive PC title

anyway, here's my shite setup...will I be able to trek through Ep2 (already played through 1 once) with it?

P4 3.0ghz
6800gt
2gig ram
(I play at 1024x768, 2AAx2AF and Vsync)

also would it run TF2 decently???

Orange Box is really a must if you're any kind of gamer, there is so much content in there.

HL2 is showing it's age graphically but in general it's such a great game. I still find it funny that people didn't like the story. I guess too many people like "Disney" story endings these days that cliffhangers are shunned.

EP1 sure is short, I finished on the PC when it first came out, on the 360 I finished it in what seemed like a few hours. It's decent though and a few memorable moments make it worth playing.

EP2 I haven't finished yet but so far I'd say it's easily better than EP1 and in feeling and atmosphere maybe better than the original HL2 story. I'm really impressed.

I finished Portal, what a great game. I hope they come up a way to work it into the next big Valve offering.

I haven't played much TF2 yet but what little I did was fun. Very familiar feel to the original in terms to gameplay which is a good thing.

Got my Cupcake achievement this morning. Finished the first two advanced challenges. I'm also halfway to the Dynasty achievement in TF2. I didn't try out the new and improved Pyro but I did do some owning as a Scout this morning.

So I played a good amount of TF2 this morning [360] So when I finished I let the menu run for about 10 minutes, and then I noticed a trailer come on, it was not for any of the games on the Orange Box, it was Left4Dead! I can't wait for Left4Dead :D

I was going to comment on this, since I found that trailer when I left my 360 on idle when I first bought the game. Too bad its a stuttery mess though, kinda like TF2. :p

I just got the grav gun in HL2. Man is this game well paced. I just love the puzzle segments. Also, I just got to that one creepy looking town with all the zombies. Using the grav gun + sawblades is fun as hell. Im stuck at one part though. I cant figure out how to get through the electrified fence with a ladder. I tried throwing my sawblade through the powerline that runs from a 2nd floor window to the generator but it didn't work.

Also, how to I get the "What cat?" achievement? I thought it was during the beginning of the game where you first get in the transporter, but you can't pick up anything. Then I thought it was when I regroup with Alyx before the grav gun, but I didn't see a way to turn on the transporter. Is it in another part of the game? Maybe the episodes?

did the patch fix the team fortress 2 problems?

no :( shits still a laggy mess. Its actually gotten progressively worst, with random disconnects, freezing during load, and lagging during an 8v8 match. The game runs well on 12 or less players, but once it gets to 16, the game takes a shit. If you play online, try to avoid the 16 player matches. That is where a majority of issues are.

The nice thing is that the pyro is now kick ass. I had a match yesterday where I just dominated the other team with my pyro. It was an attack/defend match at a variant of Dustbowl. My team set up like 5 turrets and we were doing fine. Then the other team ran in as spies dressed as engineers. They kept zapping our turrets and it looked like they were going to win. Then I ran in there as a pyro and just ran around like a madman. Ended up dominating half of their team and successfully defended our last point. :D

Im going to have to try that achievement again. Is it when you're about to step in? And I did try to pick up random items, but like I said, I couldn't pick them up. I saw like maybe one thing in the room that I thought I might be able to pick up, but it wouldn't let me. Do I need to drag items from the other room and bring it to the transporter? I just can't figure it out and I tried checking youtube but came up with nothing.

It's the mini teleporter to the left when you first walk in. Check your controller menu to find the pick up button. Basically you need to teleport a little cactus plant back and forth until the machine breaks.

uh dude, I have less ram, worse processor, and a worse video card and I can run HL2 and TF2 just fine. Your rig is more than fine.

You need to
cut power to the fence from the nearby building. I think looking at where the cable leads should give you an idea.

I'm totally psyched for Left4Dead as well. I wonder if Valve is thinking about including it in the next "Orange Box"? (Episode 3, Left4Dead, Counter-Strike Source, Portal 2, etc.)

Whats the deal with l4d? Is it a multiplayer survival horror? I forgot where I read it from, but I remember hearing about a game that meshes mmo with single player, basically parts of the game would be single player, but then you'll get to one part where it turns into a multiplayer game. The single player part would still be running, but instead of AI bots, humans are in control. The human enemies would also have their own set of objectives like in a dm game. Is this the game?

Also, I'd like to see a new box set with CS:S. That would be awesome.

I tried to break that running cable with a sawblade too. I was stuck there a LONG time in fact. The solution itself is obvious(ish), but there's an even MORE obvious potential solution that just doesn't work... I was barking up the wrong tree.

For all of Valve's vaunted playtesting, I can't believe they didn't realize that people would try to use the sawblades on the chord, considering they just trained you to fling sawblades around :p

Glad to see that I wasn't the only one. :p Funny enough, I even tried to make a mad dash up the ladder, sacrificing some health for progression, only to get my ass fried. :lol

You're thinking of The Crossing. There's been virtually no media for it since it was announced. We can only hope Arkane is still working on the game.

You're thinking of The Crossing. According to Wikipedia (a great place to get your sources from, right? :lol) it's being developed by Arkane Studios, and Valve is helping them with the source engine amongst other things.

Left4Dead is basically a horror-action shooter. You take control of, I think, four main characters and play through different scenarios that contain massive amounts of Zombies. There's also a multiplayer mode where up to four other people can play as a Zombie along all the other A.I. Zombies. Supposedly, it's going to be really hard to tell the difference between the A.I. Zombies and the four other players.

Here's a few videos on Left4Dead you can check out if you wish to:

I now pronounce myself the best Medic playing TF2 on Xbox 360. I own! Almost have my 25,000 healing achievement. And I haven't been playing all that much, but I'm really liking it. Not playing so much that it feels like grinding I'm really just playing and having fun in my free time.

Also...Left 4 Dead should be really fun. Especially if you have three friends to play it with. I'm still advocating HL2: Episode Three, Left4Dead and CS: Source as Orange Box Episode Two.

It should be called something different, like the Orange Disc or Black Box or Gordon Freeman Love-Fest 2K9.

That encounter is just wash, rinse, repeat all the way through. Take out Hunters, sticky bomb the strider, and shoot, then get ready to do it over and over again. If there was something to mix it up a bit like a Hunter rush (kekekeke) before taking out the last few Striders minus the escorts, IMO it would have been perfect.

for what its worth...the update that valve pushed out for TF2 (360) over the past couple days DID fix the lag issues for me...

Me too, the game is silky smooth all around now... runs perfectly.

I'm still spoiled by the bigger rooms, dedicated servers, and better textures of the PC version, but the 360 version is, for all intents and purposes, amazing for a console port.

I have really high hopes for Left 4 Dead and I hope that they can pull it off. Shawn talks about it on last week's GFW Radio; I agree with him that the balancing sounds very tricky [i.e., making it fun for people to play as zombies and not be cannon fodder], but I think this one is really worth watching for.
