several theories. one chell is an android, two chell was abducted and held in that egg cell until portal starts, and other generally goofy stuff

go to halflife2.net and check out their forums for various theories

Isn't there some mention of a father daughter day? I assumed that GLADoS had just kept all the daughters from that time and used them as test subjects.

God, if you'd waited a week or two I would have sent you my promo copy of Jericho to save you buying it.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for you online, and we'll play some TF2 sometime.

Wow, that would have been a tempting offer. I fully expect Jericho to be horrible, but I still needed to play it for myself (I love Barkers character design and visual themes. As for his stories... Not so much). I don't think I could have waited two weeks, even when I've got a billion other games to play. Thanks though.

TF2 might be on the cards. Is there many people playing on the 360 side? Again though, it will be a while before I venture into that territory. I have Portal, HL2 (never played it, I didn't like HL 1 so I avoided it on PC), ep 1 and 2, Kai, Castlevania, Jericho, and Origins to finish. I also have to battle my wife for the TV, she'll be playing GH3. Christ... At least I'm almost done with Kai (GOTY).

another theory, but during the final battle GlaDOS mentions Chell is an orphan

It's pretty bad, yeah, but I think a lot of that was because I was playing through HL2 at the same time.

There aren't heaps of people playing TF2, but there are enough for it to provide at least a couple of good games every time. It's just a hell of a lot of fun, and there's not the same pressure that I've felt in other multiplayer games. Which is good, because I suck at multiplayer FPS.

I'm on a bit at the moment anyway, so I'm sure I'll catch you. I'm trying to rush through a review of Crash of the Titans. In short: it's balls, but I seem to get achievements every twenty minutes.

So it will sell well then

This may or may not actually be true. She is not particularly hesitant to outright lie to you.

Orphan doesn't mean you never had parents. It means they're dead. Father brings daughter to work at Aperture Science. Father inhales toxic gas and dies. Daughter is kept for study.

Doesn't she say you're adopted? Parents could still be alive. Your thing makes sense, but just pointing that out.

even that can be a lie. You can't really trust anything glados says

Hay guys what's going on in this thread?

I'm about to finish HL2 for the second time and embark upon the episodes for the first time.
A question: Are there any
Ravenholm-esque zombie horror
sections in the episodes? I know the first one has one in pitch darkness, but are there more?

Theres some more zombie fighting but most if not all of it happens in the daytime

I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to play through Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun. I was attempting to do this (and doing quite fine) until I got to the room where you have to wait for the freaking elevator and you get raped by the fast-moving zombies or whatever you call them. It's impossible.

I ran in circles and they followed me. Then I fell off and had 20 some health. Found more health reentered repeated and got in the lift. It's doable.

It's an achievement added to a game a couple years after it was originally released. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.

HL2 scares the shit out of me. I decided to replay it after finishing Portal and Ep2, and I constantly jumped out of my seat during Nova Prospekt, when your Ant Lions break out of the floor to come to you.

When you're on the roof waiting for the cart, there's a rock that juts out of the fence. You can jump to it and wait there while the zombies can't touch you. Some GAF dude made several posts about this a while ago, so credit goes to him. I think it might have been Beezlebozo.

a thought just crossed my mind... how will us console only gamers get to experience the conclusion of this story arc with episode 3? has gabe/valve said anything in regards to this?

One would hope. I'm sure when most console players get to the end of Episode 2 they won't want to hear that Episode 3 is PC only.

Find a 4 year old PC to sit down with? :D

(they'll probably just sell it for 20 bucks at retail)

well, that begs the question then, would dlc even be possible for ep 3? what is the size req. for the episodes on pc? if the 360 dvd can fit half-life 2, ep 1, ep 2, portal, AND team fortress, i really hope ep 3 via DLC is a possibility.

gaming journos, get asking my pressing questions!

Provided the console versions of Orange Box are profitable enough, I'm sure they'll do something similar with Ep3.

Episode 2 is 1.3 gigabytes according to Steam.

When I got there I just circled around them holding a circular saw with the gravity gun, shooting towards the wall when I had the chance. You get to kill them and the saw should stay up there for you to keep using.

Those couple of choppers just before the entrace to Nova Prospekt are brutal. I've been playing through hard but had to tone it down to medium to get past that point.

What a game though. Only second time playing through it (first at release) but this game is just legendary. Best fps ever made IMO. I also have the two episodes to look forward to as well (which I have never played).

When the screamers show up and run around for a while the game crashes. :(

Man does Half-Life 2 ever kick ass. I mean, I beat it last year, but I'm playing through the episodes for the first time, nearing the end of Episode Two currently. I can't quite articulate why I like this game so much. And if I did I doubt no one will care.

I'll prolly do it anyway once I finish Episode Two. :P

Well I crammed Kai at work today (who works at work anyway) so I could play Portal tonight. Finished Kai, got home and put Portal in.

Now I'm going to get flamed and make enemies by saying this. But I found it really boring. The start was pretty cool and I loved how atmospheric it was. But by the time I got to stage 15 I'd had enough. The levels started getting really long and it just felt like "what whacky way will we get you to put a ball in a cup next!!".

I've never been into puzzle games so it certainly was never meant for me. I did expect more though considering the gushing praise it gets. I'm sure I'll come back to it and finish it once I've finished all the other games I have. Such as Half-Life 2!

The game changes drastically in the final test room of Portal. That's where most of the fun lies.

It also won't take a whole lot of time to complete. Maybe 1-2 hours (the rest of the game from where you are)

Guys, what do you think ever happend to
the Breen? Is he really dead or does his conversation with the advisor mean something? I mean he talks about a new body and the conversation is even repeated in Ep1. They seem to be at least hinting at his possible survival. Some believe that he's shapeshifted into an advisor and he's one of the advisors who's after Alyx and Freeman. I don't know if that theory holds any truth, but I do think he's not exactly gone.

I've finished it twice now. It has an particular vibe to it, kind of like the movie Cube with a defined (and amusing) baddie thrown in.

At around three hours all up with lots of great writing and clever concepts it's a good length.

if you look off the edge of the building toward where father grigory is sending the lift, there is a small piece of ledge that sticks out from the chain link fence. if you run and jump, you can get there and stand, waiting for the lift to go up; the screamer zombies don't bother you, and just run around senselessly on the rooftop. once the lift is all the way up, jump onto the adjacent roof beneath the ledge, circle back through the building, and get on the lift.

it's conceivable to lose absolutely no health doing it that way. bingo bongo. sugar in the gas tank.

I'm sure Valve could do Ep 3 as DLC - unlike XBLA, there doesn't seem to be a size limit for DLC (how big is Shivering Isles?)
Alternatively, they could release 'The Purple Box' with Ep 3, Left for Dead & Counter Strike (or something).

Ravenholm with grav gun - you still get the achievement if you drop the difficulty to 'easy'. :O

When the hyper zombies start coming on the rooftops, just running is also an option. When you have to wait for the elevator to come, I just started running in circles around them, they barely got a hit in.

I definitely think he's alive somewhere. Maybe he's at the Combine homeworld or something. But yeah that conversation seems to have been pointed out by Valve several times in the games. We may or may not see him return.

WTF
OMFG
PORTAL IS FUCKING FANTASTICALLY GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously, I just beated it
the final song was fucking awesome :lol :lol :lol
and it has blown me away. I was kinda bored at first, because I thought
that the game was really going to end at the 19th chamber and this was slightly more than a tech demo
. Thanks god I was wrong. This was like playing an awesome Philiph. K. Dick short story live, and that, coupled with the really intelligent and original mechanics, has been one of the best experiences I've had in gaming so far. 11/10. If you haven't played this yet play it NOW.

PS:
the cake is a lie
:D

it's overrated

Don't get me wrong, I liked Portal. Especially considering there was what, 20+ hours of HL2 to go through? You could take a break and play some Portal every now and then. The extra challanges and advanced mode give it legs too. Great addition to the package, I thought.

I don't know about these guys running around screaming GOTY and how they would pay 60$ for it alone though. That may be taking it a wee bit too far.

PS: The writing isn't THAT funny either.

wow, ep 1 is short! i think it took a little over 2 hours, wth. i was expecting a good 5 or so at least. is ep 2 as short? how much were these as stand alones on steam?

You're not one of the people that thought the fire pit was the end of the game are you?

Seemed to me like Ep.2 was about twice as long and makes up for the blandness of the 1st episode. Very good length. A couple of times I felt like "oh here comes the final battle" only to find that there's a whole new area to go through.

The best way I can describe it is HL2 turned up to 11.

it certainly is gorgeous. i just loaded it up and seeing alex's reflection in the water and the citadel in the background is something else.
