The Game Developers Conference 2006 Thread (Part II)

11:12: Iwata takes back the mic and talks about the simple but addictive appeal of Brain Age. Calls the title one of the biggest successes. The development came from the idea that people wanted something new. The only real way to demonstrate the appeal of these games is to let people try them -- found that consumers without interest in games were soon hooked.

man this conference sucks

Sony's conference > Nintendo's conference

They arent even talking about games, they are ranting about educational software.

NO ONE CARES, This is GDC, guess what the G stands for? GAMES, not software like brain training.

IT BEGINS!

19.7: Iwata says he Nintendo has fail miserably as a company and proudly announced that it will partnering with Sony. He also mentioned that the Revolution will be combined with the PS2 to create a hybrid console that plays ps1, ps2, ngc and revolution games (crowd stunned, then loud applause.)
*shakes head*

Leave the parodies up to me.

Man, devoting 40 minutes to brain age must mean they're really worried about america "getting it"

They should be more worried about their future platform than a game that cost $100,000 to develop. Little bit more at stake with the former. Especially when developers are sitting in waiting to be sold on the vision.

Whether they show it all or not, this distraction is minus huge points for N.

The damn thing isn't even over yet.

Do you ever have anything productive to say?
There weren't even any trolls in the thread yesterday for Sony's conference, sad indeed.

11:16 AM PDT- Talks a bit about the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, shows off Animal Crossing and Mario Kart boxes. Seeks to make this Wi-Fi connection seamless, with anyone around the world.

Brain Training this, Brain Training that... if Nintendo don't reveal Revolution info I think it's them who needs the brain training.

11:11 A.M. PST - The three try out Brain Age and compete in an arithmetic challenge. Bill beat everyone, of course. Bill had a brain age of 20, Wright scored 41, Moledina scored 37, and Keighley scored 66.

11:12 A.M. PST - In another math competition, Moledina scored 31, Wright scored 32, and Trinen scored 29.

11:14 A.M. PST - Brain Training has sold more than 5 million copies for Japan. Originally, retailers had orders for 70,000 games, but a month later placed orders for about 800,000.

19:14: Nintendo forced retailers in Japan to play the game in this way to convince them to order it in (with Will Wright?!), says Iwata. 70,000 were ordered - higher than expected, but not satisfactory for Iwata. When they came back with the second game, 850,000 were ordered. Now 5 million have been sold across the range in Japan. There are two simple rules to making great games - first, listen to your boartd of directors; second listen to the CFO. More laughter.

11:16 A.M. PST - As a gift, all people in attendance of the keynote received a copy of Brain Age to try for themselves. Nintendo gave copies to employees to take home and how family and friends that don't normally play games.

11:16: Nintendo is taking a different approach to technology, but also find a way to make it attractive to everyone. Says network gaming has been around since 1998, but Nintendo Wi-Fi evolves it in a unique way that opens it up to a new audience.

Are you kidding me? Nintendo's worried about Brain Training in the U.S., so I guess the logical solution is TO SHOW IT TO DEVELOPERS?

Back to the playground with you.

Nintendo has to talk up their current disruptive success to convince developers of their future (ie: Revolution) disruptive success. That said, this is boring as hell. Tell us something we DON'T KNOW IWATA!

This is a Game Developers conference. The title of his talk ("Disrupting Development") should have clued you in that there was going to be a lot of talk about Brain Training and Nintendo's return to simple games. If this was E3 and they spent 40 minutes on Brain Training, then you might have something. But this is not a consumer event. STFU.

When do they announce that Mega Drive news that was posted by Nintendo Sweden?

11:20 AM PDT- Says that no one wants to play Animal Crossing online, someone has to come in and cut down all the trees. Audience laughs.

There were no trolls yesterday because Sony used their conference to actually discuss their upcoming console and show demos for it.

Instead Nintendo decides to show a demo for a game that's been out for nearly a year for nearly an hour, and then go back to discussing WFC, which they had multiple press outings to describe 6 months ago. This is pathetic.

E3 is where the big bombs are at, not GDC. =)

11:22 AM MDT- Trennon is coming back to demo Metroid. Speaks briefly about the game. Three development team members are coming on-stage to test multiplayer.

# 11:20 - Nintendo did not wish to intimidate the competition with their Wi-Fi service. Expanding the audience was their principal goal.
# 11:21 - Wi-Fi Connection began as a gameplay version of the popular website Myspace.
# 11:21 - Nintendo wanted Wi-Fi to be seamless to connect with people, just as if they were sitting in the same room.
# 11: 22 - Nintendo wanted players to have a choice with Wi-Fi.
# 11:22 - Iwata takes a stab at Microsoft, already taking one at Sony.
# 11:23 - It took Xbox Live 20 months to hit the one million mark, while the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection took only three months

11:22 AM PDT- Trennon is coming back to demo Metroid. Speaks briefly about the game. Three development team members are coming on-stage to test multiplayer. Iwata expects to get "destroyed" in the game. They play the game, with the four DS screens blown up on the big screen to show the action.

11"25 AM PDT- Explanation of the graphics and weapons, while Trennon is "destroyed". Shows the difference between characters. One of the development team is wearing a shirt that says "The Hurt Is On". Audience laughs.

It's so hilarious watching you guys do this every "megaton". Random bits of questionable information arrise, gaffers try to join dots that don't even exist, pretty soon it all snowballs and there's a massive hype train rolling around, then the event happens, and guess what, nothing happens. I just thought I'd stop by and rub salt in the wound :P

Seriously, how many megatons does it take?

iwata said before his speech he wouldn't talk Revolution, mindless fan hype wins again!!

Of course it's a developers conference, which means there's even less reason to be hosting a talk about such overly simple concepts with people who are well aware of brain training and it's success, as it's been out for a year.

If you're going to talk to developers as a platform-launching company, talk to them about what they should be bracing in regards to your platform, not in regards to your corporate non-game philosophy that's so straightforward it doesn't actually affect anyone.

Developers want things like: technical specifications, devkit details, API announcements, partnership announcements, pricing and launch information, media updates, et al.

They do not want to see a few industry icons playing each other in Metroid Prime Hunters. That shit is redundant and frivolous.
