The Getaway PS3 screens

So game teams will have several thousand artists per project to generate a citie's worth of content at that level of detail I assume?

If it's anything like the original Getaway the actual environmental modeling is pretty damn basic with all of the detail coming from the scanned photograph-based texturing. The building is a square basically, with a photo on it. Hardly a modeling nightmare.

It is funny to see a handful of people here impressed by Frame City Killer because "omg there's a few dozen people walking around doing nothing!" And then you see this, THIS is what a city scene in a game should be.

When Getaway (1) was first announced they showed screens that were unbelievably real looking (for the time), and the game turned out crap and looked average. I guess in that case all the demo did was show graphics without any AI or gameplay code - when they had to add those elements the graphics had to be downscaled.

I expect the same thing will happen with all these amazing PS3 demos. Why doesn't everyone expect this to happen? We've all seen amazing, clean, detailed demos turn into much less impressive games before.

That's why I'm not buying into the Tekken footage, the Killzone demo, or this, or anything that's obviously scripted, cinematic and not shown from the gamer's viewpoint. It's probably a visualization of what they hope to produce, but which in reality is beyond the capabilities of the platform.

Could be wrong - we could be seeing this sort of thing in PS3 games, but I wouldn't believe it wholesale at this point.

The buildings in these shots aren't simple boxes though. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that you'd need an army of artists to do it.

I don't think it will be anything like the first one. Unless they don't mind it looking like a PS2.5 game. :P

Pedigree Chum:
Tell me, 1080p + AA and it wouldn't look that clean? Or cleaner?
Nope; not even close really.

Next-generation games in motion will look a lot more solid than the epileptic visuals of the average PS2 game, but aliasing in the image, textures, and various effects will still be plainly noticeable at times even in HDTV (or especially in HDTV, depending). Any images of next generation games which look too polished most likely are too polished. The kind of smoothness that PR screens have been showing since earlier in this current generation can take AA sampled at 32x and more... 2x and 4x just won't yield an off-line render level of quality.

The voice of reason.

I expected to be impressed by some of the games looking somewhat close, but a lot of gmaes won't, and the point about clean demos/sloppy games is a good one.

That said, one reason (other than the faked screenshots building expectations) that Getaway 1 looked average is that it came out years after being shown, and other games caught up.

I was always under the assumption this was realtime. There was nothing that truly struck me as something that couldn't be done on a next-gen system. It definitely, graphically, wasn't THE most impressive demo there (but it sure looks nice anyway). I believe Phil Harrison confirmed it was realtime too (?)

From what I've gathered from the Sony E3 demo presentations, all of the demos were realtime... running on a dual CELL processor and streamed through a MAC for display. ALL these demos are being rendered without the use of the RSX which final version has yet to make it's way to developpers. All be it they were using 2 CELLs, as it has been made clear that dispite the enormous power of the CELL processor, the RSX will be better with certain computational and display tasks. I am one to believe that SONY is mainly using these demos in order to encourage single system buyers to wait for PS3 and let the XBOX360 slide to the backseat.

They have done the same with the PS2 demos which represented the full potential of the hardware. I can safely say that there are more than a few games on the PS2 that have surpassed the early demos... output resolution asside. Let us not forget that the PS2 was very hard to program for which led to these peak performances to only surface towards the later PS2 generation games. The wait might not be quite as long for the PS3 as it has been said to be comparable to program for as the XBOX360 with its tools and support.

This being said, I expect to see PS3 with a noticeable edge in most graphical areas (highly dependent on developper talent) but unlike this generation, very little difference in resolution and output quality of the image including AA and whatnot.
