Alright. When I press ctrl + alt + del a couple of seconds later the Windows Task Manager pops up. However, about three seconds after popping up, the Windows Task Manager will automically close. This also happens when I goto msconfig through Start > Run.

What the hell is happening here?

Sounds like a virus/spyware/malware problem.

Some spyware, such as Chat.Watch monitor your system for attempts to run task manager and kill the process, they do this to stop you using task manager to kill the spywares own processes etc.

I would do a thorough scan for virus, trojans & spyware if I was you.

happened to me, lucky enough it was around the time I wanted to reinstall.

freeburn brings up a good point, spyware/malware is now limiting task manager usage so you can't check and end mysterious processes. it's kinda stupid since a disappearing or non-appearing task manager is a huge tip-off, but what do i know.

I had a similar problem quite awile back, but after running spybot S&D and coolwebshredder, all was well again.

It makes duplicate copies of task manager, command prompt, and some other things that many viruses shut down as soon as they open

I was able to end the task, then scan for viruses and find it
