Although not a really good flick, and one that always divides fans of the original, I thoroughly enjoyed Escape from L.A., which is much more than I can say for Vampires or Ghosts of Mars. It's not his best and there is a definite slide in the quality of his work during the 90s, but I like that flick. Anything with Bruce Campbell gains credibility. You won't get me to endorse Vampires or Ghosts of Mars.
I mean, from 1980-1988 he gave us The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness and They Live. What's funny is hardly any of these movies were success stories and most were box office busts, but over the years, they've come to be extremely popular with genre fans and sell like gangbusters on home video.
The whole thing is pretty sad, as he's created some of the most memorable films that the medium has ever seen, but he's pretty much washed up.
... The problem?
I think the problem is that he wrote or was involved in the writing process for almost all his films prior to the 90s. In the 90s, the only flick he wrote was Escape from L.A. And the only film of the new millennium he's had writing duties for is his only film of the new millennium -- Ghosts of Mars. So in the past decade, he's written a sequel and a (practically) remake of his earlier work. I think he needs to sit down and write an original idea. That's my theory.
