Big Trouble in Little China is the greatest film ever created! Men will try for a thousand years and never come close to its awe inspiring glory! Jack Burton, Lo Pan, Lords of Death, Egg Shen, that soccer ball guy with a thousand eyes all over the place...what's not to love?

I have the DVD of Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. It's not a great movie, but as already said, it has two things...

Carpenter crazy electronica and
little girl gets shot!

That was just plain awesome.

Joe Bob Briggs' Drive-In Theater on The Movie Channel was much better. He was all about the "3 Bs" (blood, breasts, and beasts) and he could only show one of those on Monstervision :p I remember how happy he was to be able to show the The Evil Dead uncut.

And, as fun and ahead of its time as Big Trouble was, I'll have to go with The Thing.

I unfortunately only saw a few eps of The Movie Channel JBB show. Even still, I'd rather an edited Joe Bob than no Joe Bob at all.

Hmm. Likely Halloween but definitely not The Thing. I remember first 5 mins nearly ruined the whole creditability of that flick. That wolf chase was so lame could not even fit under B grade title :lol

Although not a really good flick, and one that always divides fans of the original, I thoroughly enjoyed Escape from L.A., which is much more than I can say for Vampires or Ghosts of Mars. It's not his best and there is a definite slide in the quality of his work during the 90s, but I like that flick. Anything with Bruce Campbell gains credibility. You won't get me to endorse Vampires or Ghosts of Mars.

I mean, from 1980-1988 he gave us The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness and They Live. What's funny is hardly any of these movies were success stories and most were box office busts, but over the years, they've come to be extremely popular with genre fans and sell like gangbusters on home video.

The whole thing is pretty sad, as he's created some of the most memorable films that the medium has ever seen, but he's pretty much washed up.

... The problem?

I think the problem is that he wrote or was involved in the writing process for almost all his films prior to the 90s. In the 90s, the only flick he wrote was Escape from L.A. And the only film of the new millennium he's had writing duties for is his only film of the new millennium -- Ghosts of Mars. So in the past decade, he's written a sequel and a (practically) remake of his earlier work. I think he needs to sit down and write an original idea. That's my theory.

As much as I like They Live, I always make the battles even and it'd be a stretch to include Prince of Darkness, Starman or any other Carpenter works as they're very flawed films. Even They Live is pretty flawed.

So I picked the best four.

Let the battle continue!

Y'know whats flawed?

You... you look like your face fell in the cheese dip back in 1956.

During those 30 minutes when hes finding out what the hell is going on is just full of memorable quotes and random violence. It was beautiful. If I had to pick any of them though, it would probably be Big Trouble in Little China, if only for the ending.

Jesus. I said I fucking liked They Live.

It's not perfect, few films are.

But of the four, almost all are universally recognized as superior films to They Live. So live with it.

The problem with carpenter is , if he gets any kind of budget its like the movie is shit, well not shit cause Escape From LA wasnt that bad, but Ghosts of Mars?? Vampires?? ..damn, compared to Assault, Halloween, and shit where he had to be creative as hell witht he budget. Who would've thought that using a william shatner mask and spray painting it white would totaly change the horror movie genre. I hear the new assault on precint 13 is decent but I just dont like how they changed up all the characters, the main protaganist was supposed to be a black guy that grew up in the rough streets of the that neighborhood and was the shinning counter example of the faceless gangsters. I havent seen how the new bishop is but he probably isnt the smartass who was tryin to get some pussy in the middle of an all out assault on the police station hehe classic.

Gotta give props to both Big Trouble and The Thing, two VERY different movies but all-time Carpenter greats.

Of his many movies that are neither critical winners nor complete crap, I've always liked Christine.

Gotta go with The Thing. It's just perfect with a killer atmosphere.

The Thing
The sense of mistrust, suspense and those very cool transformations make this the best Carpenter film imo. And that theme song is absolute perfection.

Escape from New York takes the crown here no doubt.

The whole movie, the story behind Snake and Lee Van Cleef[sp] forgot his name in the movie revolutionized most action packed movies in the 80s.
