you can do better than this willco. tombstone by a mile. jeez......

Hey! It's no "Gremlins vs Gremlins 2", but any second now the historical buffs will come in and tell us how bad Tombstone is!

... And then who will be wrong!

Tombstone. Natch.

Anyway, the best western (*snicker*) for me is Rio Bravo. Also, The Searchers, High Noon, Stagecoach, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. None of this modern shit.

Once Upon a Time in the West

The Good The Bad and The Ugly

All you need is Harmonica, Angel Eyes, Blondie, Tuco, and a little Morricone!!!!

The Western peaked in the 60s.

Tombstone was cool, but when it comes to 90s Westerns, you can't, can't , can't beat Unforgiven. It was bone chilling contrast to Leone's work.

EDIT: Oops, new to the boards. Didn't get the concept. Yeah, between the two, Tombstone, but they are both mediocre, really.

My above stuff shall reamin, because Im such a tool.

HAHA before I went back I read what this thread was actually about I said Rio Bravo. Nobody can touch Dean Martin baby......

This is not the BEST WESTERN topic, because if it was Once Upon a Time in the West would win hands down.

This thread is missing some The Searchers and Red River love. High Noon could also be mentioned, although it's not "really" a western, but a superwestern. And Shane, maybe?

But to answer the question, and it's a rather easy one, I'll say Tombstone. It's one of the best recent westerns, probably the best behind Unforgiven.

:lol

SUPERWESTERN. I'm going to ask Blockbuster to add that to their genres!

I knew the genius of André Bazin's genre exploration would go unnoticed here, but hey, laugh all you want, the superwestern IS a genre. Spaghetti westerns are just a sub-branch of them.

9 minutes above ya, baby. Though, I dearly missed Red River. Forgot about Shane as well. All excellent.

tombstone.

now if we wanted to talk the entire genre, I would be tempted to pick Shane. It's really either that or Once Upon a Time in the West.

I'd pick Tombstone over Wyatt Earp.

If you're in the mood for really good westerns, take a look at Rio Bravo, Red River, and The Searchers.

Tombstone over Wyatt Earp in a landslide. Kevin Costner as Wyatt Earp was one of the worst piss-poor performances I've ever witnessed.

This is really the Greatest Movie Debate? Doesn't seem like it.....almost everybody seems to prefer Tombstone, to the extent that it's hardly a debate at all.

With these two movies, I always get a handful of historical buffs that get their panties in a bunch that Tombstone is too Hollywood and Wyatt Earp is more accurate!

Where are our forum's intellectuals?

This is the worst troll ever...

Tombstone by a country mile. With Unforgiven coming in a close second.

"You just shot an unarmed man."
"Well he should've armed himself if he was gonna decorate his saloon with my friend."

I might just rent this Rio Bravo thing tonight, then.
Rio Bravo is more "light-hearted" than both Red River and The Searchers. Of the three, it's more "fun" to watch. However, in terms of a "great western", I'd put both Red River and The Searchers over Rio Bravo. It's a bit of a toss-up between Red River and The Searchers for being the best western.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly is the best western made to date. Followed by all the other Sergio Leoni westerns... then l consider the American made Magnificent Seven as a good attempt.

Italians made em better :)

Where is "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly"?

Where is "Unforgiven"?

Where is "Hang 'Em High"?

Federman, you're in serious danger of squandering all the goodwill you've built up with me over the past year. Serious danger.

Anyone has seen Open Range? It got some good reviews, some great, and some pretty bad.

I liked it fairly well. Slow to get rolling, but damn, the shootout was one of the best ever.

Joke post? It's pretty clear from the thread that this isn't about best western, just which of those two westerns is better.

(Unforgiven with the Sergio Leone Trilogy close behind it)

I like Wyatt Earp better almost because it's longer and more detailed, not necessarily the more factually accurate.

Hmm. When I see "Greatest Movie Debate" and "Western Edition", I'm naturally going to assume that, you know, the greatest examples from the genre are going to be included.

Maybe things are different 'round where you live.

Yeah, apparently it is the movie debate that is great. Not a debate about the greatest movie. Confusion abounds...
