The home stretch - Bioshock Infinite has gone gold

You really think they intended to end with some of the hammiest writing around and a horrible gimmicky boss fight from the beginning? Come on.

I agree the last 3rd/4th of the game weren't the strongest and the final boss was a let-down. What I'm saying to you is that you cannot with any confidence attribute those particular complaints to specific people leaving the studio. These problems sound like they could easily be the result of time pressure. Wasn't Ken Levine the game's writer? I think he might have stayed on.

If you want to make this argument, you need to start by determining the roles of the people who left. Then you have to connect those roles to the perceived weaknesses of the bad parts of the game, and determine when those parts were developed. Then you need to rule out other explanations like "they just ran out of time" and so on.

If you don't want to do all that, it's because this is a pointless argument about something we will never have sufficient information about.

I want to watch the trailers but I can't! it's my fucking curse!

can't wait to dig into this one and examine every little texture. congrats irrational

Just preordered it a little while ago on Steam. I'm taking a chance on this game and hoping it won't be nearly as bad as Bioshock. I've accepted it won't ever match System Shock because they're pandering to consoles, all I hope is that it's a better game than Bioshock. Please don't make me regret spending your inflated PC price.

edit: And yes I know about 1999 mode but they have to prove it's not just a difficulty slider.

45 dollars here in Brazil, still not worth it.

Edit: Oh, they've increased the price.

I couldn't be happier that the multiplayer was cut. To me it means they'll be taking that time to polish the single player experience.

I do wonder, has there been any word on whether or not they'll try to tack on a multiplayer/co-op feature via DLC? I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that, especially if the core game play is stellar.

No word that I can recall about any add-on content at this point. (Other than a couple of pre-order bonuses)

edit: this suggests there will be no DLC. http://www.examiner.com/article/no-bioshock-infinite-dlc-confirmed

I take it that if it were planned initially then cut that they have a multiplayer component constructed and only in need of polish, so it would be good as DLC.

It's not really an argument. I can't properly persuade anyone because no one including me has all the information. It's my opinion and my gut feeling that the game will be a hot mess, not necessarily horrible.

And by the way, writing is usually collaborative in the big game/television creative settings. One writer can be credited but there's usually a team to work out the kinks (Although with Levine's famous ego this might be an exception)

I know writing in entertainment is collaborative. So was it the writers who left?

I'm not 100% confident in this game either (and no one should be about any game). But for some reason that doesn't compel me to speculatively shit on it. I'll complain plenty if I'm disappointed after I've played it.

still haven't played anything in the BioShock series. I'll never forgive the shift from system shock to this.

Zero interest in Infinite.

So you won't play the game - because of the shift to from System Shock?

Kind of crazy to deprive yourself from what is considered one of the best games this generation, for some x-factor reason. But okay.

what an odd contribution to the discussion.

Well, at least he showed you his skeleton.

Why would they do that?

Maybe they like not making money? You don't know!!

Even if that were true that would just describe how awful this generation was. Because Bioshock was a massive step down in just about every category from SS2.

Hopefully they were able to pull it all off despite the development issues. In a perfect world they would meet the bull-demo of the E3 2011 trailer, but I doubt it.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Will wait for reviews.

I'm not saying that opinion is factual. I'm saying he's depriving himself of possibly playing what he could consider.

Wasn't trying to say he would find BioShock to be one of the best games this generation. But that by refusing to play it for some outside reason means he won't ever know.

But to each his own.

yeah pretty much. I would have loved a continuation of the System Shock series rather than the bastardization that is BioShock. That's the contribution to the discussion. Are dissenting opinions not allowed?

Maybe that's to insinuate that he is dead inside.

and congrats on not recognizing a character from one of the finest games ever made...

Very excited for this one. I loved Rapture. Bioshock on 360 was my first "next gen" game in HD and it was a fantastic introductory experience. More recently I played through the second one, plus Minerva's Den, and even w/o Ken's involvement it was still a cut above most FPS games due to the setting and narrative.

A tiny bit apprehensive because of all the strange happenings at Irrational, but it would have to go some to be as boring and bland as something like Gears of War or Killzone.

Year 3 is best year!

Actually, I think 2 is better.

Our savior, Ken Levine, will deliver again. So maybe BioShock stumbled for the last third of the game, but if Columbia is half the setting that Rapture is, and I have no reason to believe that it wont be, then I'll be a happy guy. Gonna finish up SS2 again and probably play BioShock to get myself ready.

Do you mean shift in the mechanics or shift in setting?

If it's the former, fair enough. But if it's the later, I have to say I strongly disagree.

The absolute best thing about the Bioshock games (besides Bio 2) are the unique settings. I would much rather Irrational spend their time crafting new settings and worlds than pumping out samey sequels.

I don't think Levine believes that though. He probably thinks Bioshock is his best game ever because it sold the most.

Except for those cateogries that it wasn't a step down in. You know, like gunplay, production values, art design. I also think the soundtrack is better in Bioshock. Some of these things might be contentious, but do you really think Bioshock was a "massive step down" in these categories?

This is amazing news. I hope the game turns out as great as they want it to be. As we want it to be. The game was set out to be something ambitious. Let's hope it still is!

thanks for your reasonable post. For me it really was the shift in mechanics. I generally love a game for its mechanics first over anything else. System Shock 2 excelled on both fronts, great mechanics and a deeply immersive setting. Now I know some people might be thinking, 'well so does BioShock.' And i'll grant the latter point that the setting in BioShock certainly is very impressive from what I've seen and little portion that I played. But we all know pretty water effects and decent art design don't make for an amazing game alone. Something as simple as removing a proper inventory and simplifying the progression mechanics took away the essential nature of the Shock series resulting in a game in which I no longer have an interest. It's a shooter, with some various methods of approaching encounters, some light pipe dreams hacking mechanics, an admittedly interesting setting, and what some might consider a decent story. BioShock Infinite doesn't look it seeks to reinvent the wheel or return to the original Shock series trappings.

And to those unwilling to understand, forgive me for liking the things I like. I would take Ultima Underworld, Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis, SShock 1+2 over BioShock any day. streamlining and simplifying is a real problem and that's at the heart of why I don't want to play BioShock and its myriad iterations.

Thanks for explaining yourself! I can see where you're coming from, and agree that it is unfortunate gaming has been heading down this path. Also, I agree with your gameplay first sentiment.

Keep an eye on Bioshock Infinite though. Specifically, wait as see how "1999 mode" turns out. If that really does bring back a lot of what has been missing since SS2 it could be enough to entice you. Realistically, I only expect it will increase the difficulty and force more meaningful choices in terms of skill specialisation, but you never know!

Yeah I actually just read about that somewhere else. It is intriguing and I wonder how extensive the differences are. Unfortunately I think we can assume that such a mode would only unlock after completing the game once or on particular difficulty so I'd have to slog through the game normally first. does anyone know more about this mode?

With all the talk of ambition and "firsts" with this game its going to have a mighty large hill to climb. I wish them luck. At the very least, im counting on this being a good bioshock game. Ive always liked the frantic combat and customizations.
