The Humble Monthly Bundle

Poi is not finished and is far too simple to recommend. It has Mario 64-caliber controls, but the gameplay is more like a Nickelodeon game for the PS2. It's pleasant enough but doesn't come anywhere close to its inspiration.

Source: 100%ed it, still waiting for the gates to open.

Worst montly bundle. I might try Starward Rouge, but the rest doesn't interest me.

September with Soma sounds good though.

Delighted with jackbox as I just bought the first one on Wednesday and am loving it. I'll at least play poi out of the rest.

Even if some months are worse than others, there's still 12 dollars worth of gaming each month.

A bit OT but last month I got into the whole Humble Bundle thing and since I was there there was no break between the game bundles but now the 2k Bundle is over and nothing new. Is that more usual? How much time is there normally between the normal game bundles?

Yeah, having breaks between bundles is not uncommon at all. There isn't normally a break of more than a week before a new one pops up though.

Yeah, they skipped two weeks, not common. I think they did it so people expecting a bundle would buy the monthly instead since there was nothing new half a month.

Wind waker:

I hope its just a place holder.

Van Helsing is a good game as long as you dont play on Hard or above. Trust me on this, that extra EXP and gold may be tempting but aint worth the pain and frustration.

What are we supposed to see there? The two generic grasses?

Probably the assets, not sure if Nintendo created it or if it´s part of some generic package or whatever. It reminds me of some game that used identical trees from The Minish Cap, but they ended up using other assets for it.

This month is really a disappointing bundle, from my point of view. Last month's bundle was great, and there doesn't have to be much on top of SOMA in the next bundle to make it extremely worthwhile, but this bundle has nothing that really excites me. Planet of the Eyes, maybe.

It is, however, nice to see that Arcen Games got a spot in the bundle, but I only say that because I am fond of that studio.

Is Poi any good, nostalgia aside?

It's good if you want a game to remind you of Mario 64 every 6 seconds with really precise, fun controls.

It's not good if you want a compelling adventure with tons of challenge. There are even some levels called "challenge" levels that let you try different platforming scenarios. I was thinking it might remind me of Mario Sunshine's pack-less levels. I beat them all in one try.

Poi's biggest problem is that it knows it wants to be Mario 64, but it forgets that Mario 64's greatness comes from the fact that it is this massively expansive world that challenged players to get good. That and the score, art direction, and several mechanics that just aren't in Poi. For example, ice physics and water levels.

Now I sound like an ass railing on a $10 early access game from an indie studio that's not Nintendo, but when you're doing to take all your inspiration from a game company that says "Fun and accessibility above all else.", it better be really fucking fun.

Poi might be as fun as Mario 64 for your 5 year old brother if he's never played a platformer.

Great controls though. Nailed it.

I mean, if money's tight yeah save where you can, but "this month sucks, cancelling" comments never made a ton of sense to me personally? Its $12. The months where I've gotten $30 or $40 worth of games I actively cared about still outweigh any months without anything in particular

Nobody says the games aren't worth 12 bucks. Just that they don't think they want to play them and thus it's 12 bucks "wasted".

Its not about the money, its more that I am simply not interested in any of the game.

Unless you try them and enjoy games that you did not know you wanted to play.

why would I play games I don't know I want to play when I have games I want to play that I don't :P

that being said, I since I break even and get games I want.
long live the humble bundle.

Last months was worse, but it has been two shitty months, I will wait and see about next months and if that is shit too I'll cancel.

That's kind of my experience too. I've been able to make most of.my money back reselling the games, but they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel in some of these. They really need to include full versions of games always.

The COD multiplayer thing was just such a slap in the face (even if I got $8 for it)

New ones normally pop up on Tuesdays.

The 2K one was really good, by the way.

I like it a lot. Its skewed towards exploration (particularly its side objective of finding hidden locations), but some of the later worlds so far have some tricky sequences. Havent played it since they added enemies a month ago though so maybe those add something. The controls are really good and each new world they add is an improvement over the last.

I dont really agree with Speevys weird Dark Souls style assessment of Mario 64. Most of that game isnt difficult, and in this day and age most of its worlds are pretty small. The joy of Mario 64 is in its playground sensibilities, and I think Poi in part captures that. Isnt an all time great, but still really solid and fun.
