It's not too hard once you get the hang of it, just start out simple, don't try to get something with a lot of frames into a small avatar, it's not going to come out pretty. I also don't recommend using any of the optimizations unless you have to, the colors can get really get washed out cause of that.
But yeah, most everyone else has mentioned the basics. I would like to mention one other thing though. Do remember that the speed of an animation has to be at least .08 seconds for the animation to be displayed in Internet Explorer correctly. Otherwise IE will just make it that speed if it's any faster, and it'll come out slow and choppy. demi and I had quite a time trying to figure why that was the case.
