I suck at making them so much that I can't even figure out how to put one together for this thread. I have no idea where to start, really.

i use virtualdub to trim the avi to what i want
then use image converter and editor to convert avi to gif
then use jasc animation wizard to tweak it.

obviously there's got to be a better way

I do almost the same steps as you atomsk, but I let Jasc convert the AVI to a gif. Then, because the AVI is nice and big (meaning the gif panels are big) I trim it up, crop, zoom, whatever and then finally resize it. Usually looks pretty sharp if I have a big enough AVI to source with.

Jasc can convert avi to gif, that's where you could be going wrong.

Oh, i'm using Jasc Animation Studio 3.

Get the file in Quicktime
Get Quicktime Pro and grab just the part you want to make a GIF
Export that as Image Sequence
Load Macromedia Fireworks
Import image sequence as animation
Tweak and delete frames as needed to get below 150k

That's the costly way to do it, anyways.

Follow these steps as previously posted:

It's going super fast. I haven't been watching the new season, so maybe Bauer got new powers or they added a speed view and ditched the real time thing...I dunno...

Ok that's the thing, it looks normal for me (Firefox, Opera) but when I use IE, it looks a little slow. But then some people see it going superfast. I have it 0.04 seconds I think...but it looks fine to me on my screen

It's not too hard once you get the hang of it, just start out simple, don't try to get something with a lot of frames into a small avatar, it's not going to come out pretty. I also don't recommend using any of the optimizations unless you have to, the colors can get really get washed out cause of that.

But yeah, most everyone else has mentioned the basics. I would like to mention one other thing though. Do remember that the speed of an animation has to be at least .08 seconds for the animation to be displayed in Internet Explorer correctly. Otherwise IE will just make it that speed if it's any faster, and it'll come out slow and choppy. demi and I had quite a time trying to figure why that was the case.

I set it to 0.08 after deleting every other frame, works fine on all browsers from what I gather!

Ah ok, yeah I still had the same file name, but I uploaded the new gif and renamed it. It was probably in your cache

Thanks dudes!
