The infamous "Christmas lights" Xbox console problem - I need your help!

My Xbox started having the apparently infamous "Christmas lights" problem a few weeks ago, where it turns on/off/on/off/on, then starts blinking green & red. After researching, I found out that this is generally an internal hardware issue and could be one of many, many things, so I can't know for sure. I'm out of warranty, so I can't get it fixed for free. I bought the Xbox in June of last year.

Here are my options:

1) $80 + shipping - Send it to Microsoft to have them fix it "like new" and get a 1-year warranty.
2) $150 + tax + warranty - Buy a new Xbox for $150 and be sure to get the 1-year extended warranty (since by default it's only a 90 day warranty).
3) Free - Open it up and try to figure out the source of the problem. I wouldn't know what to look for, so I would need to find someone to help me with this one.
4?) Buy a new hard drive on eBay? I wouldn't know what to buy, and I wouldn't know how to install it. Plus, I don't think there's any guarantee it would work.

I'm leaning toward buying a new Xbox, unless someone thinks I should open it up/offers to help me. I could sell my current non-working Xbox on eBay for about $50 to help with the cost of a new one.

Also, it may seem funny to some, but I really want to have a working Xbox when the new Halo 2 maps come out on Monday. Obviously, if I sent mine in to Microsoft to get it fixed, it would take awhile to get it back.
