EW posted a hands on gameplay impression of Borderland Legends:

http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/10/25/borderlands-legends-review/

Reading that is seems like Borderlands is closest in gameplay to a Tower Defense game? Where your "towers" are the four characters you move around and aim. Hmm...

Is there a particularly good resource for reviews or coverage of iOS stuff these days?

Touch Arcade is a good resource for what games are available, but not so great at actual reviews. Check out Slide to Play, Pocket Gamer, and yes even IGN mobile for that.

Doesn't really sound like that to me, the focus on the cover system, and chaos from controlling 4 characters at once, etc... sounds more like a RTS like Dawn of War 2 than TD.

Something keeps bothering me... I've been playing Dungeon Raid almost every day for the last... 2 years (it and Drop7 are my commuting games, since it takes me 15 mins to get to uni from home on the bus)? And 99% of the times I play as Adventurer so I can unlock the other classes, but to this day, after 2 years of playing about 10 mins of Dungeon Raid EVERY SINGLE DAY. I still have only unlocked 4 classes. What the fuck am I doing wrong? Is there a specific way to do things to unlock more classes? I play on hard, btw.

I'm really liking Penny Arcade 3 thus far but I'm worried that all the options for class pins are going to be overwhelming once they add up. But hey, at least they level up even when you're not wearing them.
Works great on the iPhone 5 by the way, full screen and all.

I'm sure this is a recurring question in this thread, but I'm after some gaming recommendations for games to download for iOS. I'm 99% sure I'm going to pick up an iPad Mini, and gaming is one of the features I'm most interested in.

Obviously I know of stuff like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, so I'm looking to avoid those sort of recommendations, but what are some of the other better games on iOS? Is there a particularly good resource for reviews or coverage of iOS stuff these days?

EDIT: I'm open to all genre's and all suggestions.

FM Manager is on iOS as well!

This is why a recap of the month threads would be great. So people who don't keep up with the scene as actively as we do can get what they missed

I'll have a look at those, thanks.
One thing I am interested in, is whether anyone here has any experience with The Walking Dead on iOS? I was going to wait for the PS3 retail version but am tempted to pick it up on my new mini once it arrives. Any glaring differences between the two versions?

From what I hear the iOS-ports are fine. I'd still not buy it on iOS if I were you though, it's a better fit for console/pc imo.

Don't forget to buy it though no matter the platform, it's an amazing game!

Yeah, it can definitely feel a little overwhelming. In my experience a lot of the classes have a lot of superfluous moves. Look through a class' move set and try to get a general feel for it (like "This class emphasizes speed boosts and controlling enemies' placement on the turn bar" or "This class acts as a tank") rather than getting caught up studying ever move. There's a lot of classes but if you think of them in terms of how they can be used they aren't too hard to keep track of.

It doesn't help that the game dumps loads of classes on you all at once though instead of spacing them out.

Sounds like you're just not getting enough trophies, why not bump it down to easy or normal until you get all the classes? Only a few of them are good though. The one that gives you more armor every time you kill ten enemies at once (or something like that, it's been a really long time since I've played) pretty much breaks the game.

Get the Toucharcade and Appshopper app to keep track of which games to buy and when to buy them. It's impossible for a site to cover everything but Toucharcade does a very good job, as long as you aren't looking for something thought provoking, but just wanna know what's new and interesting. The reviews are typically too enthusiastic for my taste and seems to be rated against other phone/tablet games, instead of comparing them to gaming in general.

Pocketgamer and Slidetoplay are also worth a look and make sure to get Sentinel 3.

You must be missing the trophies. You actually have to tap on them when they appear in order to unlock the new class.

Punch Quest is fun! It's really amazing how game makers are twisting the Runners mechanics to the point they are getting more and more interesting.

I didn't understand how updrades worked (didn't know I had to equip) but now I'm really enjoying it.

I'm wondering what leveling up the gnome does.

GAF, I can afford an iPad mini this month, or I can wait a month for an iPad With More Pixels. I kind of like the idea of a mini more, but am concerned that it's an iPad 2.

Are there any games that are newer-iPad only, or are there likely to be before long? Apple products are hardly future-proof, obviously, but I'd like it to be for as long as possible!

Here's my current picks:

Someone suggested a couple of days ago that perhaps it would be like Battleheart. From the sounds of, they were right. That's fine, so long as it's not the same thing over and over again. Look forward to seeing what kind of effort they truly put into it.

Well to be fair Battleheart was pretty much the same thing over and over again. I still loved it, but yeah some variety would make that nice. I'm glad they are mixing in different objectives.

Is there any way whatsoever to change a game language besides changing the global language setting? It's kind of pissing me off to see bad German translations of games just because my phone happens to be set to German. I want to be able to change the language in-game, damn it!

Beware some of the glowing reviews - I was not as wild about He-Man as most:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/25/he-man-the-most-powerful-game-in-the-universe-review

Keep in mind that 6.8 is still "Okay" and is very close to "Good." I'm a strong believer in some games landing firmly in the "strong okay" category and still being very recommendable to some folks based on their taste, mood, etc.

Edit: I'm going to have gameplay footage of Borderlands Legends tomorrow morning. Can't talk about it before then unfortunately. I don't believe anyone else will have hands-on video.

TA seems to really like it

Can't wait!!!
I still haven't understood which kind of game it is (I was hoping for turn based but it isn't).

BTW....did you had any chance to pester Ubisoft about Clash if Heroes and Ghost Recon?

It's He-Man so I watched the touch arcade lets play. They didn't have much good to say about the game and so I'm surprised it got such a high score...

Looking forward to that Borderlands video. I never played Battleheart and so I blame that as to why I can't wrap my head around what kind of game it is. This past couple weeks there's been a lot of high praised games that just didn't click with me.

I think only if the developer provides an in-game setting for it, Where's my Water does that.

I thought so :( It shouldn't be difficult to implement this, so why are some developers too lazy to do it? I was looking forward to try out Squids Wild West, but the texts are awful. Now I'm glad I didn't pay for it...

Played a bit of Majesco's Legends Of Loot tonight which is free.

Fruit Ninja esque combat mechanics are pretty cool and its got a nice hook on the loot front but production values are quite low and the ads for purchasing in game currency are overly intrusive.

You wander through mazes and combat is handled on a seperate battle screen. Seems to be plenty of content to dig through too. Worth a try I would say.

Not really, that would be financial suicide for devs. RR3 will definitely make better use of the A6/X processor though. Still, as long as you're fine with the 1024x768 res, the device should be more than capable to handle everything you throw at it.

MacStories notes that Apple has begun changing the tiers at which apps are priced on the iTunes App Store for several countries in Europe. The lowest price on the App Store for many of the countries (listed below) was once €0.79, but it has been bumped up to €0.89 this evening.

Italy
Spain
Netherlands
Portugal
Greece
Poland
Germany
France
Belgium
Austria
Czech Republic
Denmark
Luxembourg
Hungary
Russia

To bring them in line with the dollar rate apparently

The Walking Dead is fantastic on iOS. I haven't played it on any other platforms and I can't see a controller improving it at all. Love it.

Anyone been playing League of Heroes? Not seen it discussed here, but it's a pretty cool freemium ARPG. It's quite casual, think it may have been a facebook game, and it has the usual freemium time mechanic where you can only play for a while and then let your timer refill. It's really fun so far though, and the controls are spot on for me. Seems to be a nice variety of enemies so far and combat is very competent. Worth a look I'd say, I would link to it but I'm on my iPad the now.

And I concur with the Punch quest is awesome banter, and quite enjoying He-Man too but not nearly as much obviously

Just came across this game:

Hot Beat
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hot-beat/id541790834?mt=8

It's a clone of DJ Max Technika. iPad only.

Comes with 4 free songs. There are 2 app purchases but they don't seem to be working at the moment. Songs are from anime btw. Not crazy about these songs but gameplay wise, I'm enjoying it. You HAVE to play on Easy first to unlock the other difficulties.

This game just makes me want a DJ Max Technika port even more.

Also...

Rhythmix:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cfdzZ733lo

The first 2:11 of this video shows what the old Rhythmix looked like. Straight up Technika. Since then, they had to change it because of patent infringement. The footage you see at the 2:20 mark is what the gameplay will look like now.

This game has already been submitted to Apple so it should be available soon. I'll be keeping an eye out on this one. Can't get enough of these rhythm games.

TWD on iOS is amazing. Put on your headphones, turn down the lights and get sucked right in. Touch-screen is perfect for this game too.

Just beat Sword and Sworcery, it's a cool game. I played the first half when it came out, got annoyed it wanted me to mess around with my calendar settings and never beat it. I forgot how simple it is, for all the praise it gets it's pretty much just walking around and clicking on things until you figure out the correct order, fighting the same few enemies several times, and not much else, but the awesome audio, visuals, and personality still make it stand out. Usually I roll my eyes at cutesy indie humor, but the writing is S&S is really charming, and occasionally cracks me up (Logfella/ Robert Ashley's line about blood sports and Dogfella's tweet about the different kinds of unknown are both made me LOL). Zooming all the way out looks amazing on an iPad 3.

Wario mentioned on Twitter earlier that The Room might be on sale for $2 tonight, I was curious to check it out so I've been keeping an eye on it but no dice so far.

I'd personally wait for the iPad 2 mini.

It'll be out in six months. Watch.
