The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Watched a bit of gameplay video of it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it safe to assume it's basically Civ in space?

Well...outside of staple turn-based empire builder standbys, it is solely a game of military conquest, so if you strip out certain elements of Civ, I suppose you could say Starbase Orion is similar. But if you know how Masters of Orion 2 played, you'd know how this one works.

A neat aspect is the fleet/ship designer, whereby you can customise all sorts of payloads and ordnance on a variety of different class hulls - also adjusting their passive modules; adding shields, fuel, point defense etc.

My finger has been on the verge to buy Starbase Orion countless times now...

I would love to play it (especially in mp)...my problem is that while I like a lot the setting, I do not like a lot 4x or resource management games (I do not like Civ).
I would prefer to sink in a story or at least have many 'events' during the game (like unexpected thing happening...like new destroyed ships discovered, black holes, alien invasions, diplomatic requests...) than manage countless 'lifeless' planets and the like.
On the contrary, every people I know with the game is hopelessy in love with it, and the devs are constantly improving it.

What do think?
You said the mp is solid....nice notifications? Multitask? GC integration? Realtime chat?

Sorry to ask but....you could have another adept here :)

Hmmm...well, there's no real story, per se. It's just a sandbox galaxy that you must make yours. However, there are random events - though not on the scale of, say, GalCiv2 - and you do find strange hostile aliens in unexplored systems (though these are simply basic, rather powerful early-game doorstops to colonising systems)...but what I can say in terms of an understandable reluctance towards management drudgery is that the UI saves this game in regards to keeping an eye on your expanding empire. From the Empire menu, you can delegate population of a planet into varying occupations and balances, shunt population between systems, fast-track planetary developments with the touch of a button etc. etc., which is where I do most of my work. I completely understand where you're coming from, but the focus of Starbase Orion helps to alleviate a lot of concerns.

MP is solid, yeah. Ranked matches allow for 1v1, 2v2 and free for all...as far as I know, you can't invite to those as it auto-assigns you either a fresh match, or to one waiting on the server for the requisite number of players. Notifications are fine. It runs on Game Centre, so in the custom unranked games, you can invite players on your friends list. There's a chat menu, works really well - you can access and utilise it any time you want, but it automatically pops up at the end of your turn in case you forgot to check it at the start of the turn. It keeps getting better and better, and as you mentioned, it keeps getting a lot of love from the devs. Well worth it.

Oh man, FFT and RetinaPad look beautiful on iPad. Guess we have a new answer for the peeps that pop in once a week to ask about FFT iPad. Jailbreak, pussies!

It likely means your brain is tired and just needs something you can zone out with. Been there, man...

It's happening more and more. I go to start up a game and I'm like...by the time I set it up and play I just don't feel like it. Whereas with iOS games I can do other things (cook, watch tv, browse the net) while playing.

How do you even play Tiny Tower without paying? Tried it once, and while I can see it can be addicting, I got bored as hell at the forced slow pace of the game. Are all these people who love Tiny Tower pumping extra money into the game, because as a free game, I just don't get it.

iPhone+async gaming=GAMING NIRVANA.

Just saying.

I had many triple A console titles to play this weekend (starting with Skyrim) but all I was able to do was Ascension on my iPhone.
All of a sudden, games I would had sinked 8 straight hours in the past are meaningless to me.

Am I the only one?

As I said before, async multiplayer is portable gaming as intended by God. Perfect.

Though I still very much enjoy the triple A console titles. I simply don't have enough time to sink into all of them at this point in my life.

It's not really a game for you to keep playing for long stretches, it's more like a glorified screensaver that you check once in a while when you're bored to tap a few times and then leave. Paying real money doesn't help at all after mid-game either. It's addicting because of the cute graphics, nice sound effects and the nonstop gratification of filling stores with things and seeing new floors pop.

Started Chaos Rings... pretty good, enjoying it, looks great (I recall the big deal with older models chugging in the snow storm). Only just started so we'll see. Trying to understand the benefits of using Pair versus Solo, and other elements. They dont seem to explain it good.

Ok, good. I thought I was somehow missing something after listening to rave reviews and then finally trying it.

It's really a pretty great game, reminds me a lot of the old square titles. The sequel...mehhh.

What's the lowest price that game has come down to? Would definitely like to pick it up if it's ever on sale.

Well it only goes on sale apparently during the holidays, and I believe Chaos Rings was the cheapest then, when I grabbed it and Omega. I wasn't waiting a whole year.

You should delete Tiny Tower before it's too late.

How is it possible to play Tiny Tower non-stop? You have to wait for time passes after a bunch of clicks, then rinse and repeat. Unless you stare at the tower and waiting for the time to pass - and consider that as gameplay.

I enjoyed the sequel more. More focused with 1 storyline, and some neat artsy visuals near the end. Combat animations were smoother, and they fixed up the stats so you don't become ridiculously op near end game.

Thank you! I was 1st on Chapter 6 I think and in the top on a few other ones. Suddenly people are beating my scores by like 10 seconds, when I can only shave maybe a few .01's here and there. I don't want to say cheating but I mean WTF

seriously, I think that the chapter 1 overall leader is cheating, how can you pull such a quick time? It is something like 25 seconds compared to my lowest at 47 seconds. I feel as though there is something sketchy going on there, too bad.

it is possible to grind the elevator.

but its when you have 80 plus floors and you have a floor that needs restocking every 15 mins. constantly thinking about it, just trying to get the next floor or get that next dream job.

then you delete it and its thankfully all over

So has it been mentioned that Puzzle Juice is the best iOS puzzle game since Drop 7? Game is absolutely incredible. Every aspect of it is so great from the music to the asthetic to the actual gameplay

For any Mad Skills Motocross fans in here, here's some info on the 2012 Tournament that Turborilla are putting on:

http://www.madskillsmx.com/tournament

I still wish they would use GameCenter for this instead of Openfeint, but whatever. I think it's the best 2D racer on iOS.

They are also developing Mad Skills BMX, which sounds interesting.

I love everything about it accept my own vocabulary. I can only manage cheap 3 letter words here and there. That's why something like SpellTower is more engaging from a word game perspective. I honestly wish Puzzlejuice was a straight up Tetris/match 3 game since the music and art style are my thing.

How is Rockband, Guitar Hero and Michael Jackson The Experience?

In the mood for a new music game. I already have Groove Coaster and Cytus (both great, btw). Pulse looks pretty rad too.

Jukebeat is also good, but the musics are a little pricey.

I had pretty much the same reaction as you when playing that game. It's cute, could have been fun but it's a game where you need to shell alot of money to have any sort of fun. Even worse, I felt it's actually rewarding you for NOT playing. Pretty crazy design philosophy if you ask me.

Anyhow, I suggest you try Mega Mall Story if you haven't already. It's a game similar to Tiny Tower except it's fun, plenty of stuff to do and you can play for a long time. It's also nothing short in charm compared to Tiny Tower.

Random... are their any iOS games like the old PC Space Shooter Freelancer? Something where you can go around doing missions and upgrade your ship. I've played Space Miner, and while it's fun, I'm looking for something a bit deeper (I'd prefer first person too, or at least not top down).

Also, anything like Civilization but in space?

Dominion is out on the Appstore. For free.

It's not the official app though. Apparently the creators were ok with the devs releasing this, as long as it was taken from the store when the official app is released (according to them, in a few weeks).

There's offline and online mode. Not sure about async though.

I would post an iTunes link, but I couldn't find.

Just to clarify things on this issue if I can at this point. Over the past two years, RGG has been approached by a number of people asking to do a "casual" and free app for Dominion. In such cases, we have usually said yes with the stipulation that once the "official" Dominion app became available that the free app would be removed. Cory is one of those who asked and, as with others, we gave him permission to develop a free Dominion app, which I understand he has finished. I admit some surprise as it has been months since we last spoke and I had assumed he had decided not to complete the app. In any case, as long as it is free, it is allowed, at least for a few weeks until the licensed app becomes available.

I am sorry if there has been any confusion regarding this.

Thanks

If it really is that much better than Ascension, it kinda sucks because I just bought Ascension a couple of weeks ago. :P

It's your lucky day, because there are two great options for your requests.

Galaxy on Fire 2 (go for the HD version if you have iPhone 4S or iPad 2) and Starbase Orion for the second request.

Welcome to last week. ;)

By last week, I mean yesterday.

Base Ascension >>>> Base Dominion. Not to mention the expansion as well. However, I'm dying for Dominion + expansions.

My understanding is that the app is not endorsed by the creator, as the agreements they normally give to casual developers are that they don't make money, they don't use the original art, and they take it down in the event of an official release.

This latest vision clearly violates the art, as it uses scans of everything.

On BGG, Donald urges people to not support it, so yeah, I dunno.

The response that heringer posted from RGG was directly in response to this latest release which uses the art. They will allow it to stay up AT LEAST until the official app comes out, so long as it stays free.

The Triple Town designer made a large post on Google+ about why they chose to make the game freemium instead of $0.99

What do you guys think?

Jackson (if you are still in this thread), I am especially interested in your reaction as someone who has several hits out that use the traditional model.

I love how he start by saying "why" and then he doesn't explain or give any explanation or argument in favor of the free-to-play model. All he's saying is that it's a long term model? So people are still paying for those games after a couple of months? If not, I don't see the difference with "traditionnal sales".

I was switched over to the JP App Store the other day to pick up more song packs for jubeat plus, and was caught off-guard by the existence of taiko no tatsujin +. Holy crap. I might have to pick up JP iTunes credit for the second time this month x_x
