Is there a comprehensive list or wiki somewhere of all iOS games that support the highres iPad display? Or even better, a way to filter for it in the app store itself?

Unfortunately no. Usually they'll make mention of it somewhere in the app description, since it's a selling point.

Man, Junk Jack is hectic. I keep getting my ass handed to me at night. And my pickaxe isn't working on rocks. What the hell should I be doing?

But... It looks so terrible..

I think citi racing is pretty good... Plus it's free.. I like it better than death rally and reckless racing... The cartoony atmosphere of the tracks and cars really help make it a light and refreshing experience... The dev has gone and made 7 cities to race in with 45 tracks. And there's plenty of depth in the racing, u have to get your driving lines right otherwise u can't win. Plus the tracks are really well designed from a racing and also graphics viewpoint.

I played a few runs of Ski Safari. To me it's like a cross between Tiny Wings and Jetpack Joyride, except not as good as either of them.

I don't even get why you'd compare the two tbh. Ski Safari is more like that shitty rollercoaster game and it's all about leveling up and all kinds of crap. Whale Trail is way purer and more skillful.

I couldn't agree more . Playing for high score is absolutely a blast. The game is more than it appears to be.

Dear GAF
The idea is terrifying, but yeah, we could do with a new one couldn't we?
I'll be happy to do it again, but I'd rather avoid the bitching and toy throwing that accompanied the last one. So to that end, does anyone have any alternative ideas on how the voting should work? I think the 10 votes thing worked last time (on balance at least) but if anyone has any ideas for tweaks to the system I'm all ears.

I think you did an awesome job last time, I don't remember if people bitched at you for whatever silly reason but fuck 'em. Either do it yourself and better or shut the fuck up, this should be a motto embraced by humanity as a whole. Having an external poll wouldn't work imo, it should be done on GAF. Mention 20 or 30 notable games, link a list of the games which came out from 2011 to the first day of voting and... ta-da?

edit:
Oh shit Panama "Lord of the Codes' Chief has been banned, hopefully not perm'd :[
hang in there mate!

None of these games are bad, they are all very fun. There's just so much out there that you have to be wise with your time I suppose. I like Whale Trail better as a high-score chaser and I just find it more challenging and interesting generally than Ski Safari/Jetpack/Rollercoaster Rush (all super-fun games btw). That's why it's kinda funny to me when someone goes well this game kinda sucks but hey it's free it's like NOO my time is far more valuable than .99 or whatever. This is why I've happily paid for Carc, Ascension, and several other uber-high-quality games.

That said I haven't played Whale Trail on iOS. Got it on Android and played the shit out of it on my GN.

I wasn't paying attention, but if this is a BestOf iOS games poll, don't you think there should be way more choices than 20-30? Or will people have the ability to add games to the master sheet?

:)

And it's flexible, he could choose to mention 100 if he wants to, I was just trying to put a reasonable number out there... I wouldn't personally be able to come up with such a number of worthwile iOS games from the last year and a half.

There wouldn't necessarily be a custom master list, just a link with what games came out in that timeframe and then people can pull whatever game they want from that list and vote it/them. You could choose to vote any game dated from 2011 till day1 of the voting poll.

Anyone play Montowers? It's free right now. Kind of a mix between Shin Megami Tensei and those IRL time waiters. I'm having more fun with it than I probably should be.

In regards to the "best of" thing, I personally think we should all vote for the best game in different genres and do a runner up in each one. That way some games that may get lost in the shuffle could get some attention. Just an idea, I'll be fine with whatever happens. :-)

I think I'm just goin to buy this since people are praising it...Looks like Terraria in my pocket. Are you playing on iPhone or iPad?

I don't know how to make stuff in junk jack! Ive only figured out how to make a torch :(
Well it tells you how to make stuff like shovels and swords in the in-game guide. But before I can build anything cool, or collect some different materials, it becomes night time and I die alot and lose my stuff. : /

Ahh, I guess I shoulda read that :P

I just took a bunch of dirt I had mines and built a box around my guy to survive night time :P

Starbucks advertising in this thread was a pretty smart move on their part. I too succumbed to the half-priced Mocha Cookie Crumble talk. It was quite tasty. (I got skim milk to help offset the delicious chocolate whip:)

I know I'm late to the party, but I just had my first Mocha Cookie Crumble during Happy Hour too. It was delicious.

Does the developer(s) of Squids post here? I thought I saw them posting a few months ago.

Just in case I want to sing my praise about this game. Great art syle, wonderful music, awesome characters and worlds, super addicting rpg lite type meets underwater pseudo angry birds game play (I use angry birds loosely). I seriously loved everything about this game. Really good stuff here. Lots of content too. Just when I thought I did everything more and more kept coming. Cant wait for the sequel.

Now a question for those who HAVE played the game. Now that I have finished it I'm a sucker (no pun intended ;) ) for getting achievements and I'm trying to get them all and I'm a big short with no guidance on how to finish it. I'm looking for the "Lets Bounce" achievement. I thought I bounced off of SOMETHING with every squid on every turn and didnt get it. Are there specific things your supposed to bounce off of? What exactly qualifies as a bounce? If nobody knows is there a site out there like Achievement Hunters for Xbox cheevos but for iPhone games?

Is this game really like Final Fantasy Tactics as it says?

Just in looking at the screenshots, it doesn't seem a thing like FFT.

Also, Junk Jack looks awesome. Will probably pick it up.
Ok so what's up with this jackin' your junk game? For three bucks, it better hold my attention for a week, or at least a full day.

Someone sell me on it.

It appears to be Minecraft in 2D, basically. I'm struggling to get to grips withit, but then I've not played Minecraft myself. It also looks rather pretty on the iPad.

The trouble with this is how do you define genres? Are endless runners and platformers the same? How would something like Bumpy Road fit in? What's the difference between arcade, action arcade, adventure and platformer?

The genres on iOS are far too wooly to make that approach work IMO.

But at the same time, it could totally work from an ease of browsing approach, as well as ensuring there are an even spread of genres represented...

There's a YouTube trailer for this on their website; you should edit it into your post. (I can't get the URL since I'm on an iPad.)

This honestly looks pretty snazzy. I'm a huge fan of one-button games, so I might just grab this when it launches.

Slightly off-topic, I used to be obsessed with the idea of designing an iPhone game where you didn't need to see the screen, nor hear the sounds. I first got the idea when I was getting my haircut, and I was so unbelievably bored, I just wanted to play something on my phone. But you can't, since it's both rude, and they don't want to get hair all over your phone. While my hand was in my pocket, I just started feeling around on the touchscreen, trying to imagine if there was anything I could do that had some sort of feedback for the player.

I just really like the idea that you're stuck somewhere where you can't take your phones out, but you could still play some simplistic game without anyone knowing. I suppose the only other feedback it could give you cues via vibration. Maybe some kind of Sound Voyager type of game... Anyway, if anyone ever thinks of something, let me know. I've got a small iOS dev studio that hasn't been used in months and months. =P

Man, Junk Jack is hectic. I keep getting my ass handed to me at night. And my pickaxe isn't working on rocks. What the hell should I be doing?

Just use recipes to...make shit. It'll help you with pretty much everything in the game including the creatures that come out at night. Or you could simply close yourself in under ground 'til daytime.

Format last time was perfect. I see no reason to mess with it.

Yeah, getting to grips with it. It would help if it told you what everything is though. The lack of text and labelling makes juggling your inventory feel like fumbling around in the dark.

There's a magnifying glass icon near the bin that lets you know what stuff is.

I couldn't find it at first.

Game looks great on the new iPad.

Junk Jack impression.
1st 5 mins
This game is boring. I'm kinda going around aimlessly.
15 mins
Night time. Wtf, monster killed me. This game. Sucks.

1 hour
I'm building a batcave. God, I'm so doomed. I won't be sleeping tonight.

A useful tactic is to use one world as your 'base' where you build shit, and the other two as resource gathering/strip mining worlds. Your inventory is universal across all of them so everything you have on you carry with you.

Cheers, that's good to know. And weird.

Cheers, that's good to know. And weird.

It was even weirder back when there was no way to plant trees. It pretty much forced you to create disposable worlds for harvesting wood.

Disposable worlds are good for recipe gathering, though. Since you'll have a full day on each new world, you can run through them and collect any surface crates and then pop out and delete the world when night falls. But that kind of grinding can burn you out on the game quickly.

Agreed, and I was under the impression the dev was working on an update that helped offer a bit more instruction.

Hmmmph... it's really hard to find metal ores. When I found some, turns out that my pickaxe or shovel is not good enough and I can't mine it. :|
Is there any type of equipment that last forever?

I found that the pickaxe just could not break rocks, rendering it useless. Don't really know what to do about that.

Is this game really like Final Fantasy Tactics as it says?

Yes, but very thinly. Here's why:

- Turn Based (You, then Enemy)
- Classes with abilities
- RPG elements, with some form of equipment

It's a very good game. Just dropped to $2 I believe.

Still plugging away at Chaos Rings 2... just did all the different branches for story, need to do all PUB requests for the final ending. Reached 30 hours overall.
