The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet, but I just went to Best Buy's website thinking I'd check to see if they're running 20% off iTunes codes... and indeed, the deal of the day is 20% off a $100 card. Deal expires in 5 hours, 40 minutes.

Oh goodie. I was nearly out of funds on my iTunes account and needed to buy some digital comics tomorrow.

Also, just came back from Starbucks and grabbed eight cards for LostWinds. Who wants one? PM me. US only, unfortunately.

Is this actually worth it? I enjoyed playing the browser game, but when the PSP mini version was free and I tried it, I had no fun at all.

Let's play the perspective game.

I thought it was well worth 4 plays on an arcade machine.

Except now I own the game I played on that arcade machine.

Forever.

You're terrible, fuck. I'm now going to look at every damn game as if it were an arcade game.

Code for Fruit Ninja - can someone please redeem this and let me know if it works? Just tyring to iron out all these bugs.

Thanks!

You should hide the codes you post in email tags, this way lurkers can't snag 'em and you have to actually be logged into a neogaf account to view it.

You get Ace! for doing it on your first try... No idea how to really for sure get 3 stars vs 2 stars, I sometimes think it was perfect and only get 2. Maybe it's time-based? As in, you get 3 stars if you're fast/swipe fluently an don't make the players stop? ( since you can pre-swipe and don't have to wait for stand-still). But no idea.
3 stars is based on what ratings you get for each pass or shot (OK/Good/Excellent). If you get Excellent for every action (or sometimes you can miss one if there are say 4-5 actions and you get good on one) you'll get 3 stars.

Maybe its just the codes. Even on the halfbrick site all the codes I tried for fruit ninja were all redeemed. :(

Need some help picking up a decent time sink for the iPad.

Currently considering Junk Jack, China Town Wars and Bards Tale. Any similar games that would be fun and have decent story to boot? RPGs and Adventure games preferred! :)

Osu!Stream is updated and has a couple of new free songs, you can redownload the old free songs as the "bundled" pack. It total, it comes with 7 free songs now and I think a few more are on the way.

IAPs are still on sale, too, so four VVVVVV songs are 69p

Thanks guys - can someone who can still redeem a fresh code, or who hasn't got Fruit Ninja on a device generate a new code and test it for me? Made some fixes but need a big test bed. Trying to sort out this issue ASAP

Or use the chocolate bar method.

A 69p/$0.99 app is the same as buying a chocolate bar (maybe 2). An app is a much MUCH better investment and doesn't ruin your health.

Anyone? Looks like a great game

Re Adventurers Workshop it is ok.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily say it has more depth than DR.
There is more to the graphics, but DR is certainly a more well thought out and balanced game.

Here, I'll try to explain through a haze of cold medicine what's going on.
(Summary = Think of it as DR with a timer. It's ok, probably not as good as you're thinking.
But it's only a dollar, and the devs are working to improve it.)

--
First on the board you tap on the image of the person (refer to screen below), this is the customer.
A little graphic will pop up a character (customer) saying "I want a <sword/helmet/boot/necklace> because I'm an adventurer guy..." yada, yada, along with a number of days (turns) the request has to be completed in.

Then you have to connect a chain of the icon type corresponding to the customer's request ending the chain on the customer, representing selling the item to the customer.
You get more money from the customer and more xp for bigger chains and quicker execution and various random events occasionally give you other bonuses or penalties.

Every tile you select to match costs money out of your gold for materials.

It is timed ... a "day" passes when you make a set of matches or after 20 seconds, whichever comes first. If you fail to complete the customer's request in the time/turn limit you lose one Repuatation, lose 3 and you lose the game.
Run out of gold and you lose the game.

At level up you get a power up / ability to add to the board.

It's ok I guess ... I didn't find it terribly compelling, but I don't care much for DR either.
Potentially it could be somewhat tactical/strategic, but because you're on a timer you don't really have the opportunity to plan too much.

The translation is not all that great giving it a low budget somewhat amateur feel ... and it doesn't explain all the mechanics terribly well. The artwork is decent.
It's got a good foundation but can use some more work and polish to really shine.
The devs are active on TA and seem to be freely implementing suggestions provided there.

CrimsonHeart won't even let me get on their server, so I can't even start my game (via Ipad). WTF is this shit? I tried like 4 separate times last night.

Is cannabalt still worth it or has it been topped by other runner games?

Other endless games have more depth and variety but Canabalt is still excellent if you only care about the core gameplay and topping your distance.
It's worth getting just for the music and aesthetics to be honest.

Any of the above would a worthwhile purchase. I personally couldn't get passed the controls in GTA on iPod, but I haven't tried it on iPad yet. Junk Jack is really good if you don't mind that sort of make-your-own-fun gameplay. The controls in Junk Jack on iPad took a little while for me to get used to, but they're ultimately functional. I support the iPad with my right hand (so the quick slots are in reach), and keep my left hand near the center of the screen (swipe anywhere to move, tap on specific blocks to break them). Bard's Tale I was really impressed with (it's a console game, and it feels like one). I did end up getting distracted though and haven't returned yet.

If you want big, meaty games, I might also suggest both Final Fantasy Tactics and Avadon: the Black Fortress. FFT is a slight chore to work with the touch controls, and it still looks like a ps1 game and has occasional slowdown, but under the shit it's still an great game. Avadon is a cRPG that looks great and controls pretty well. I haven't put too much time into it yet, but I really like what I've played. It's a slower pace, and so far I've spent almost as much time in town as I have in the wild.

There's also a bunch of games I haven't played yet, but are on my Appshopper, and have seen a lot of praise. The Quest (cRPG), Chaos Rings II (jRPG), Battle for Wesnoth HD (sRPG; couldn't get into this on iPod, but it gets so much praise I plan to give it another spin on the iPad), and Sid Meier's Pirates.

Huge thanks for the impressions sladeums! I'm a huge Dungeon Raid fan so think I'm going to give it a go. The time limit you mentioned was off putting, but having read through their TA thread (and being very impressed that, as you said, the developer is really trying to implement the changes people want) that they are bringing out a relaxed mode, which I like the sound of :)

I played through all of GTA CW on iPad and I loved it to bits. Far superior to the iPhone version in every respect, from visuals to controls to ease of use. Great game. GTA3 is also pretty damn good, but it suffers from being a quick n dirty port.

And I played a bit of Avadon but it didn't really grab me, seems very C-tier from what I played. Maybe I should get back into it now there's something of a big-games drought for me (I think I've played every major game I want to play now, booo)

In terms of more teeth-sinky games, I love the metroidvania games on iOS. Aquaria, Waking Mars and Lost Winds are all fantastic games with a lot of playtime in them.

Also, it's not really a serious game, but I've been playing the shit out of Bring Me Sandwiches lately. It's pretty damn good - lots of levels, very challenging, great controls. It's my current mission to 100% this game and I spent 5 hours on it over the weekend easily.

My dad just got back to me and said he finished and absolutely loved! Final Fantasy III iPad/iPhone.

Mom said he was so addicted he would play all the time, any chance he could. Even during church (she is the pastor even). I think he beat it in a week or so.

After enjoying it he was awaiting Final Fantasy Tactics, but the reviews seem to price ratio turned him off. (he put in over 115 hours on the original)

Any suggestions? I was thinking Father's Day gift.

He has an iPad and iPhone 4S.

Chaos Rings trilogy (if you had to pick one - CR2)

Same for you, too. Chaos Rings 2 best iOS 4ever

Thanks for all the suggestions! Will pick up a few of them for sure and report back. The selection on iOS continues to impress. Can't wait for the EE port of Baldurs Gate to hit. Looks promising from previews so far!

/highfive I think I know who I am playing multiplayer first.

Any indicator of how many units there are? From what I can count five so far: cavalry, pikemen, swordsmen, archers, catapault.

I was wondering about picking up an RTS earlier. This timely post has made my mind up for me.

Not interested in the game (RTS, yaaawn) but that brush looks both badass and affordable. I've been looking to do some animation on my iPad, this looks like the tool I've been after!
That's normally my reaction too but after sinking what feels like decades into Tower Defence games, I reckon I should give an RTS a crack.

Looks like Burnout Crash is dropping to .99 later today.

No idea how it is. I just marked the game because it's Burnout, and EA games go on sale often. I wanted to look up a video of it, but instead found an awful ad with Hasselhoff...

Hmm, I would follow your advise but I can't stand tower defence either. Even PvZ pisses me off. Gimme a good platformer any day of the week!

Woot, I've been interested in that Monster Tamer game ever since it came out. Glad that went free. Also, Trial Xtreme Winter Edition is now free - the "sequel" to the best trials game.

Good god, Sniv. You have odd tastes.

Yeah kinda. Masocore platformers and metroidvania games pretty much. And some puzzle games obviously.

I really don't dig tower defence at all, and I think it mostly stems from playing the 'original' desktop tower defence years back. I very quickly realised there was one perfect route or setup to use, and it kind of killed the whole genre for me. Even games like PvZ, it's just a matter of getting a couple of fast peashooters and then some ice plants and you've sewn it up. Bored me silly, and I played it for hours and hours.

It's such a passive genre, and I realise that I don't like passivity in games (ironically I still really like a good turn based RPG or shooter, and they can be both passive and random, so my logic often falls apart). I just want to jump in there and fuck shit up based on my twitch skills.

I realise I am a very contrary character though. You should hear me talk about music, I make NO SENSE :P

I know this is an EA game so I doubt it has GameCenter support-am I correct?

I'm not a fan of Tower Defense games either, but RTSs are anything but passive.

Defender Chronicles 2 in T-11 hours, Minsc!

Yes, it looks like it'll be great! And they already outlined the v1.1 patch hitting in a few weeks with a new map and other content, should see a fair amount of post-release support like the original had.

In other good TD news (for those without iPads or prefer to game on smaller devices), I didn't see it mentioned yet that the much loved Kingdom Rush is making its way to iPhone/iPod in the near future (weeks?).
