The Sewol sank off the south-western island of Jindo on 16 April 2014 killing 304 people, almost all school children on a trip.

It has been winched to the surface so a platform can be inserted under it for it to be towed ashore.

It is expected to arrive at port in less than two weeks, where it will be met by the families of victims.

The bodies of nine victims are believed to still be trapped inside the sunken ship, and raising it was one of the central demands of their families.

The sinking was blamed on a combination of illegal redesigns, cargo overloading, the inexperience of the crew member steering the vessel, and lax government regulations. The ship's captain was later convicted of murder.

This is going to dredge up some really haunted memories.I wonder if this will yield any new and pertinent information.

Hope their transportation department has enacted and enforced far more stringent safety measures to ensure such a tragedy does not occur again.

I saw the families protesting in front of the presidential palace in the blistering cold two years ago. looks like they finally got what they asked for.

Not sure he said things were fine, but I do recall him instructing the passengers to stay in their cabins.
This could be a (badly judged) protocol.

The turn that sunk the boat happened around 9ish. The captain was rescued at 9:46 and the students still inside were texting loved ones until 10:17

Not only did he bail he told everyone to stay put. He also delayed the order to abandon ship by 30 minutes which some people questioned if it ever reached the passengers at all.

I remember reading that some of the deceased students were found with their ID cards in their hands or mouths, presumably to make identifying their bodies easier for authorities/parents.

Really horrific.

this is easily worse than a plane crash...at least there you die instantly.

here you just wait till water fills everything up, knowing very well it's the end.

horrific.

Spoilered because it might ruin some days

During a memorial service, a pastor who had witnessed the cleaning and shrouding of the bodies said, “how much have the children scrapped at the walls while trapped in the ship that their fingernails have all fallen off.”

I remember the captain also identified himself as a "passenger" when he was first rescued.
What the fuck? I hope he's in jail?

I usually dont like to judge people in these situations, 'cause it's easy to talk from behind a monitor... but fuck this guy just went ALL in with that shit.
Damn.

I remember when this story broke. :( Really tragic, I'm glad the few students who still haven't been recovered will be able to be put to rest soon.

Life in prison.

Deserved. Hope it was worth it, cap'n.

Well that's horrific. Was there no way to get people off or did the crew all just say fuck it?

From what I remember a lot of things about the ship were poorly managed. IIRC there was a lack of lifeboats and other safety precautions, but I'm not 100% if that was confirmed or a rumor. If there was a lack of lifeboats, it would explain why the crew basically said fuck it and bailed as quick as they could.

I wonder what the captain or his lawyer might have said for his "defense" during the trial... I hope he can't ever look at himself in the mirror for the rest of his life.

I followed this news live back then, I remember thinking they will be fine, they will survive. I remember live videos and streams from them inside, joking around and being OK.

International help was on stand by by the country didn't want any and said they will handle it and yet hours went by and the kids were still inside.

So damn heart breaking, a real tragedy.

Same. It is absolutely heart breaking thinking about how many chances there were to save these kids. Over and over.

The captain and crew sound like real bastard pieces of shit, I'm glad they recieved jail time. Small recompense for the families, however. Maybe now they can finally get some small measure of closure.

Wait I don't understand.

Were there not enough lifeboats? (I know the cunt captain abandoned them)
Why did they refuse help?
How on earth did this even happen?
