The Last Remnant Review Thread

Price on this is back up to $56.99. Question: if I ordered this game at $56.99 on 10/2/2008 and the price dropped to $39.99 on 11/10/2008, I should still receive the $39.99 price given Amazon's Pre-order Price Guarantee, right? Anyone know?

Yes. (why pre-order so early, though?)

I love RPGs and this one looked good. Also, I'm hoping developers get pre-order numbers (though I have no idea if they get the Amazon pre-order nos.) in order to dispel the "360 owners don't buy RPGs" myth.

Thanks for the confirmation!

official xbox magazine says 70

wtfff

Why is that a wtfff? It's completely in line with the other US reviews and comparable to the last SaGa's metacritic score.

I loved Squaresoft before joining Enix, but this game is far inferior than Lost Odyssey in every way.

Oh, so you've played both?

French gaming website Gamekult just said in their last video podcast that the game is not that great. Very forgetable :/
It suffers from clipping, repetitive town and dungeon design, bad graphics and meh storyline.

This website is the french equivalent of Edge for the harshness of the reviews (and often HARSHER than Edge !).

Just can't understand the thought of playing a griding game for 40 hours being cool.

Seriously, if the story isn't worth it, the game isn't worth it.

I don't know if this was already posted, but Amazon has the date for the PS3 version as April 1st.

Whoa April 1st, that is quite interesting that it is so late after this holiday season. I hope it moves up to January or February! 4 Months of additional development for PS3 version is quite extreme.

At the same time, I'd rather have them delay it as long as possible, read the reviews for the 360 version, and polish the game based on those reviews. That's the way to do things, honestly.

I'd rather have a "Last Remnant Special Edition Zodiac International whatever" than a "Last Remnant Port of a game that was kind of shit", even if it comes a bit later.

I read the PS3 version will be released in winter, so April 1st seems a bit late for that.

Unless they totally stopped development of the PS3 version, Winter 2009 sounds quite unreasonable. Maybe it's like Amazon says, in April, or maybe June, like vgp says, but beyond the first half of the year sounds like nonsense.

Its time-exclusive for 360, so I'm not expecting it til next fiscal year.

They meant winter 08/09 :P

You guys complaining about PS3 version being TBA and all that, just think of how much us who want to get it for PC will have to wait.

Shit, write up a review then. I'd love to hear more specifics.

Pass on this, too many better games to play.

Allow me to point out that this particular reply quoted the one-line review score from the Official Xbox Magazine.

so in other words you just don't like puzzle games... because I don't understand why you stated time , when each puzzle can be done fairly quickly. RPGs on the other hand require hours and hours of "time".
Because I have <TIME FOR GAME>. So I fill it first with RPGs, then with other games. Genre really has nothing to do with anything, especially with handhelds.

Damnit, I want my fucking copy. I almost want to catch a cold tomorrow night as well. "/ I have no fucking time. Damn JLPT.

Yeah, level 2. I know it isn't the be all end all of testing your Japanese, and means nothing for your skill, but if having it can help me, and it seems it can, may as well. Plus, the grammar points have actually been coming in handy with a lot of games and manga.

People put well more than 40 hours through FPS games. Same thing. You like the mechanics, you'll do it.

Is this going to turn into the official thread or should I make one of my signature No-Thought, No-Effort 'cause No One Cares Anyway Official Threads?

I can't imagine a new thread could turn out any worse than this current one.
I say go for it.

good luck on the jlpt man

And it's time to round up all the reviews since then.....

Gamespot: 6.5
Eurogamer: 6.0
Gametrailers: 8.0
IGN: 5.3
GameSpy: 3.5/5
1up: D

I just don't understand it at all. Major reviewers are slamming the game across the board, but regular people who are playing it all seem to love it. I know I do. I haven't actually spoken with anybody who's playing it who doesn't like it.

It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

This looks like the biggest contrast between pretty much every single major review site and regular gamers in a loooooooong time.

wow Famitsu, what the hell is up there. Is it just because it is SE?

How weird.

Based solely on video it seems ok enough. Lag-y during battles, looks OK, battles themselves seem like glorified turn based combat.

Dunno, wish I had a demo.

And yet, the Famitsu review is closer to how I feel about the game than any of these low scores.

Well, GameTrailers's is the closest. I don't really see any excuse for the 5.3 at all.

Famitsu and GameTrailers are the most accurate scores, though. The 5.0/D from 1up is completely puzzling. Their complaints seem almost like they were looking for things to complain about. The 5.3 + "How to make RPGs" article from IGN is asinine, and, if I was the director of this game, would probably take offense.

I've seen one low score of this game at least somewhat well explained and it was Eurogamer.

I hope people don't laugh at Famitsu here-- I really think they are closer than you think.

It's a shame that all these sites gave Infinitely Unplayable a good score and took a crap on one of the freshest, most interesting Square Enix games in a long time.

The Famitsu review is out of respect to Square Enix, that's for sure.

So what do you think of the game?

lol Gametrailers seemed to love it, I usually get games at their suggestion so that is quite good.

I cant honestly believe that the game would be that bad to deserve a D. Ive never known Square E to release any game of BAD quality.

So what do you think of the game?

I haven't tried it yet, but I still plan to, since I tend to enjoy console JRPGs. It's just, given all the better reviewed JRPGs out already, this isn't going to be high on my priority list. The performance problems shouldn't be overlooked, since it can really hinder the enjoyment of a game. Also, the 1UP review said that he started off enjoying it too, but the battle system doesn't hold up by the end of the game.

The reason I feel Famitsu overrated it out of respect is because that score is far too high for a game that apparently has worse technical problems than all the other big JRPGs on the platform. Gametrailers was more reasonable, by acknowledging that it has serious technical faults than will hamper the experience, even though they liked it.

Just in reverse.

GTAIV had a great main story for the first half, then it became garbage. I feel like they were trying to pad it out too much, and that the game would've been far better if it ended around the Bank Job.

Well, GTA4 got a huge backlash for being overhyped and overrated, but I still feel that it's a good game. I doubt very many people would really say that GTA4 deserved a 5 or a 6 just because it was overrated to 10s all over. We see backlash all the time with overrated big releases, but the rift between the opinions is never this huge imo. This is a bunch of reviews saying the game is pretty much unplayable and broken, when actual non-reviewers playing it are actually having a ton of fun. It's totally weird.

It's entirely possible that finishing the game will result in people lowering their opinions of it. I also suspect that technical problems become a bigger issue when you beat the game by playing 8 hours a day. Oh, and 2 hour battles don't sound fun to me at all.

What that is a selling point of a good game. Something longlasting and keeps you hooked, not one of those short not one of those ordeals in which Wii play for only a few minutes doing menial unfulfilling tasks that make us think what were doing is somewhat fun.

Regardless, people should be rejoicing, the game doesnt have a game ending glitch, it doesnt have the stupid thing that Xbox Assassins Creed had in which you couldnt make it to the final area because the roadway had a blue mist that lead to an area of eternal blue and falling and glithiness. I can think of myriad of other things it doesnt have.

It still looks and play beautiful :)

I don't mind a long battle, but 2 hours on a single battle is excessive. If super long battles sound great to you, you should take up MMORPGs and fight raid bosses.

wtf @ the 1up reviewer claiming that it has boring combat.

Wow this looks like it's as bad as IU review-wise..... Is it impossible for U.S reviewers to give JRPGs correct reviews? First LO, then IU, and now TLR. Meanwhile they give Eternal sonata decent reviews? :lol

Well, it is shaping up that The Book of Revenant may just be giving this game Game of the Year. Take that, Metacritic!
