Good choice of highlights. Of course a lot depends on his taste, but the bolded ones are pretty universally fantastic

Haha - thanks! And yeah, personal taste really plays a huge role in Lego buying...It's why I haven't bought a single Star Wars set or PotC/Pirate based set. I had Emerald Night, but sold it for a nice profit. :)

Asked this earlier, but does anyone know when Toys R Us might be getting Town Hall? I want to wait on my next modular when they do the b1g1 half off sale, but I don't see Town hall up.

Good point about the motors and Metal Grudge, I definitely want to be able make that (or at least something similar, remote controlled) down the road. My brother and I have the 80's Lego motors, things have come a long way from that. What did you order that got you all the motors, controls, and battery boxes?

I just ordered what I needed from the Lego website.

Ah okay. I remember back in the 80's they had a set you could buy that gave you all the motor stuff, all in one set, but just the motor and controls and such, no actual building bricks. They probably don't do that kind of thing anymore.

To power a creation, you'd need:

- Battery box (Rechargeable or AAA's required, and there's also this guy, too)

- IR Receiver Right hurr

- Controller of sorts (Variable speed for trains and cars or Standard controller)

- Some sort of motor and connecting elements (Good starter set and Wire extensions and More extensions)

- You can also get the XL Motor for MOAR POWAH

Powering creations is a really fun process and gives some kick ass results...But it's not for everyone. :)

List of responses incoming!

First off, MOC's (like making mechs and shit) will require a pretty large base of pieces. Sets will help build it like mrklaw said, but Bricklink will flesh it out.

For powering your sets, the new Power Functions with IR receiver and such are boss. You really should buy one of the new Technic super sets (Unimog U-400, Bulldozer, etc). They really show you how to incorporate some awesome PF stuff into your builds. Technic + System sets get you a huge selection of bricks and gears, both of which you'll need if you want to make something truly fantastic with motorized parts.

Space theme is sort of on a 1950's tangent at the moment (alien abductions like WOAH), so you'll ever have to pay after market prices for older stuff, grab the Shuttle Expedition, or wait it out.

For pirate ships, PotC has a few (two I think), and you MAY still get lucky and find an Imperial Flagship for minor markup, but don't hold your breath on it!

Creator sets rock, and the Lighthouse is an excellent buy. I always suggest the houses in the theme too, but that's because I've got a soft spot for houses/architectural builds.

The Tower Bridge and Modulars are fantastic AFOL pieces. If you're unsure about them, do some searching for them on display. They are both excellent excellent additions (and have crazy after market pricing...not like Star Wars, but still 200%+ resale value). Tower Bridge is a display model in every sense and will go the way of Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, etc soon.

Long story short, do some searching on the Lego S@H and get some ideas. It sounds like you want to power things, so grabbing a few of the higher tier Technic sets is probably a must, and various parts and pieces for using the Power Functions are pro, too. You may not need it, but pneumatic stuff is available on Bricklink (not sure if they're in sets anymore), and they make some great hinge/piston style assemblies.

Here's the important part about your nice chunk of Lego change...

Buy what you like and what makes you go WOW. :)

This. The Imperial Flagship is in my opinion a much better build than the PotC ships. It's huge. But it's also more expensive.

still manual control but its easy to put an IR sensor in line, and buy a transmitter.

TBH though, if you want to get into IR/PF, perfect excuse to buy a nice technics set, and actually can be pretty good value compared to piecemealing lots of different bits. My excavator has I think four motors, two IR receivers and two transmitters, along with a ton of parts.

Yeah, that's why I suggested he look at the U400, but wow! That Excavator is sort of bad ass...there is a LOT of value in that set.

So just looking a little at the Arc-170 Star Fighter by thire5 with BrickStore and it says total cost is $537 and weighs 3.4KG. Think I will have to spread this out a little.

At least the designer has kindly makred any hidden elements as yellow so you know you can use any colour. Should be able to cut down my orders a bit with that.

My brother got that one for Christmas in 1980 or 1981. I remember chewing up some of the pieces for it.

Back with my March haul. Rather than taking pics of the whole thing, like last month, I think I'll highlight some of the less common sets (at least as far as mentioned in this thread) that I snagged this month.

Pics to come soon...

Just got back as well. Picked up the Grand Emporium for now...I may go back after I get my 10% off coupon and grab Shuttle Expedition, too. :)

Arguably the most beautiful train LEGO has ever made, the Emerald Night was designed by Jamie Berard, who also designed all of the modulars (except the Town Hall).

IT'S A TRAP! A bunch of exclusive minifigs, including Admiral Ackbar and General Calrissian, made this already sweet set a must-buy for me.

The Motorized Walking AT-AT has been on my wishlist for a while now. I was able to get a deal that got me this set for what the newer 2010 set is going for. This may be the highlight of this haul.

I've been dreaming of buying the entire LEGO CASTLE series since I was a kid. Do they still make them? I don't want to buy used sets...only new ones.

Bunny and Chick say Happy Easter a month in advance.

That's some of the more unique highlights. I pretty much have every set I want at the moment, save for the super-expensive OOP ones, like the Cafe Corner, Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and the UCS Falcon. I won't be pursuing these unless I stumble onto some sort of amazing deal.

Now it's time to build my modulars and get ready for the June LotR debut.

Castle LEGO is currently on hiatus, while LEGO introduces the Lord of the Rings & Hobbit sets. There was a new release this year though - the brilliant "Kingdoms Joust", and there are a few sets that have still not gone completely OOP. Check out the following link for more info:

Thanks for the website. Lukewarm response from me; some of the sets don't look as good as I remembered.

I found a shop in Adelaide selling the Fire Brigade, and I can see why you guys dig the modulars - it did look very sexy. ...until I saw they reckon they can slug us $799 for it. Ha. Ha. Haaaa.... No.

I....uh....what?

I was tempted to walk out, grab a drink and walk back in, just so I could do a spit-take when I saw the price. Even on the local lego site, which slugs us a fair bit, its only $299. I hope I misread it, but I'm sure I didn't.

In other news they did have 3 minifigs for $10, which is a pretty good deal (they're usually $5 each here), though. I may have to go back soon for that. And to laugh at the Fire Brigade price again.

Alright, you guys got me, had to start small though, not a lot of extra cash right now. Went for the nostalgia factor here.

Alright, done! Was a nice quick build, don't like the stickers much though. I don't remember sets having these back in the late 80's/early 90's.

Me neither... it just doesn't look like it fits with the rest, IMO.

Aww, I think it fits in with the line quite nicely thematically and gives the street a fun pop of blue color. But since half of it IS structurally different than the modulars that came before or after, I can see why some scoff at it. I really love it's uniqueness in the line-up though.

Anyway, this weekends Lego plans include diving into Green Grocer next. I'd forgotten how massive this set is! And the first one with a detailed interior. They upped the included number of minifigs too. If anyone is really eyeing an OOP modular, this is the one to go for (also helps that it seems to be the least expensive). It's really a gorgeous model.

holy shit, fuck that, I have one on my bricklink store for AUD$300, how can they think someone will pay $800 for it??

While I never had the pleasure of building it, the Green Grocer is almost universally considered the best modular. Take pics!

DO NOT TELL ME SUCH THINGS! I do not want to shell out that much for it! But fuck, I am addicted to the modulars now. Itching for free shipping on Lego.com to get Grand Emporium. I dont want to shell out tons for Green Grocer.

How many unique pieces are in it? How easy would it be to bricklink it?

I honestly don't know. :/ BUT! There's a thread over in Eurobricks that someone detailed their expedition of obtaining all the pieces on Bricklink, along with showing the substitutions made in order to keep the price manageable.

That's a good way to rebuild certain sets. When I built the Lego Dragon, I had to buy a shit ton of 2x4 green bricks to make up for the cost and insane rarity of 2x8 green bricks. If you study the build and color options, you can probably get a Bricklinked GG for a little less than a NiB or lightly used one. It just turns into a time thing.

Back on topic, I'll see if I can find that article for you.

E: I lied, it was Cafe Corner, but here's the topic as its still applicable to the situation.

Going off of the four that I've built, I'd have to agree! I still have Grand Emporium and Pet Shop chilling in my backlog so I can't say that for certain, but GG really makes an effort to give every square inch something all it's own. From the curtains on the second floor to the grandfather clock on the top, you're always building something new. Cafe Corner, on the other hand, had very repetitious second and third floors, and the first to some extent.

Speaking of backlogs, is anyone else's growing uncontrollably? I grabbed certain sets that were going OOP, but haven't gotten to the builds yet. I have a mountain of Lego! Oy.

Yeah out of all the ones I have (all except town hall) green grocer is definitely the best imo, grand emporium is a close 2nd though, followed by fire brigade. I just starting building the pet shop today so I'll have to squeeze it in there when I'm done but cafe corner definitely comes last for me, the lack of an interior is a huge detriment in the grand scheme of things.

Finished bulding Cabin this morning:

From the opposite side, with wall open. Kind of wish cabin's interio was more detailed, not just fireplace.

I think I will cave this week and order Grand Emporium as well. Gonna wait until free shipping occurs.

is free shipping really rare in the US? We seem to get it fairly often in the UK. right now we have 10% off + double points + free delivery (if order over£80) + free TIE fighter if you order £50 of SW stuff.

And I still can't really justify anything new. If only i'd spent my £800 this month instead of last month..oh well

I've bought 27 sets this year and I have zero backlog so I envy you.

I just jumped back in for the first time in 20 years. I have bought only 5 sets (smallest being TIE Fighter. Largest being Imperial Shuttle) and have no backlog. I tear through the sets and need to buy more.

STOP ME! PLEASE!
