While I never had the pleasure of building it, the Green Grocer is almost universally considered the best modular. Take pics!

I'm holding onto the idea that the windows in the 'house' part don't really match with the pet shop - scale is a bit off. So I'm using that to help me try and ignore it. Do secretly still want it though.

Ghostmind, surprised the AT-AT was a good price - its a great set and one of my favourites.

Still think the Maersk is a nicer train than Emerald Night though - I can appreciate the aesthetics of Emerald Night, just love the industrial slant with the Maersk

DO NOT TELL ME SUCH THINGS! I do not want to shell out that much for it! But fuck, I am addicted to the modulars now. Itching for free shipping on Lego.com to get Grand Emporium. I dont want to shell out tons for Green Grocer.

How many unique pieces are in it? How easy would it be to bricklink it?

I bricklinked Cafe Corner. Its not too bad, but have a play with bricklink first, a big set isn't always the best way to get introduced to its foibles. I had a bunch of duplicate orders because I was still learning the ropes.

Also consider lego PAB. Their online site lets you pick some bricks too, and for rare bricks, the prices can be much cheaper than bricklink. Eg the dark red slope bricks for Cafe Corner are really expensive on bricklink (don't know if they're unique to cafe corner), but much more affordable on lego.com, so I didn't have to substitute different colours.

Might set up a wanted list for green grocer just to get a feel for costs. Those that have built it - are there any pieces that immediately jump out as likely to be expensive?

I've bought 27 sets this year and I have zero backlog so I envy you.
27?! Holy smokes, we're not even three months into the year! Impressive.

I WISH I had more time to build, but unexpected 60 to 80 hour work weeks over the last month just haven't left me with the time for my backlog. Plus I've been working on rebuilds of the modulars when I can. What I need is a stay-cation and do nothing but build. Paradise! Haha

is free shipping really rare in the US? We seem to get it fairly often in the UK. right now we have 10% off + double points + free delivery (if order over£80) + free TIE fighter if you order £50 of SW stuff.

And I still can't really justify anything new. If only i'd spent my £800 this month instead of last month..oh well

I kicked myself when I saw the 10% off coupon the day after I bought the SSD......

I just jumped back in for the first time in 20 years. I have bought only 5 sets (smallest being TIE Fighter. Largest being Imperial Shuttle) and have no backlog. I tear through the sets and need to buy more.

STOP ME! PLEASE!

Me too, I'm getting back in but my wife does encourage me to not buy too much. Smallest was micro Venator and largest was SSD.

Right now I am debating going to the Lego store to pick up some Technic and order motors and bits with free shipping.

What can I say, I got pulled in kinda heavy and had some catching up to do. Only about 8 of them were not Star Wars which is my major fave.

I've had a couple of weekends where I'm on call 0900 to 1700 and need to stay near a computer so I used that time to build.

I just finished the brown house side of the pet shop, I wanted to do the pet shop side first but when I asked my 2 year old which one to make first she said "the brown one".

The spiral staircase was fun and a bit fiddly, the toilet was pretty funny, my daughter kept trying to put a batman minifig on it while I was building "batman wants to do wees"

The basement\underneath area was cool, kinda wish they'd done more with it, the bay windows just felt like a repeat of the green grocer ones so it didn't really add much new there.

The dude painting the wall was cool but I felt overall the interior was quite sparsely decorated, I guess most of the detail and piece budget went into the pet store side? I'll find out tomorrow.

It isn't an overly amazing addition to the modular buildings but being a thinner building at least adds some variety to the street layout and prevents a street layout looking too predictably spaced.

I like the house side (not built it yet, just going on looks). I can see people buying multiples to make side by side houses. Nit built the green grocer but it is a bit odd that the bay windows seem to have different scales

I liked the top floor of the house side (attic?) with the colored window and the small garden outside.

But yeah, the pet store is a bit more detailed. All in all I like the building. And you can split it up and place them however you want between the other modulars.

I'm starting with Town Hall today. Green Grocer and Fire Brigade are still untouched.

This looks great. I doubt I could do it wihtout a parts list at least nevermind handing the beast to do it all.

Rough parts list on the second page.... another addition to my BL Wanted lists.....

There's kind of a parts list on the second page, but I have no idea if it's complete.

Maybe he will post some kind of instructions.

Speaking of the SSD, does anyone know if it has issues with sagging like the ISD did? I've been searching online, but haven't found anything.

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my ISD...I had to order some parts that were missing from the one I bought, and am adding two more OEM legs coming out of the hanger bay, but the nose still sits a little more open and I'll have to do something about that too. (I was thinking maybe a smaller 4th leg or some kind of clear plastic piece that would hold the bottom plates up)

Just a tip for anyone looking for a used ISD - be ready to order some 1x16 technic pieces. Some of them were permanently bent on the set I picked up. Most weren't really bent too badly, but when you had several of them in a row lined up you would definitely notice because the frame won't lay flat on a table...

So I thought I would see what Lego I had from when I was young...

Seems like quite a bit and some is still (partially) put together like this hovercraft and buggy:

And Fort Legoredo (with optional hotrod and alien mothership):

And some bits that had seen better days:

Leaving about 10Kg of Lego to sort - there goes the weekend!

I had some of those sets! I strongly remember that sub in particular. I need to sort through my pieces as well at some point. Some of them I've seen on some old Lego catalogues I still have from the time too.

I'm trying to work out how best to clean them up at the moment - I think its going to involve stripping them down to individual parts and rebuilding (and finding the missing pieces). Between the Lego site and Brickset I should be able to get all the instructions

I don't think so - using an image search they look the same (aside from lighting differences)

Light gray is a darker shade. I've had brick link sellers ship me parts in that shade instead of light bluish gray by accident, and you can definitely notice.

With regard to the technic sets, has anyone here built both 8043 and 8110 (the excavator and the U400 Unimog)? Both sets seem awesome to me, yet I only really want to get one right now. I just can't decide which one. Even though both are the same price I'm leaning a bit towards the excavator. It has half the pieces of the Unimog, but it seems to have more power function equipment with it. But the Unimog looks like such a cool build and would seem like a more versatile kit.

After watching youtube vids of both I still can't decide. Anyone have experience with both and could give some opinions?

Unimog

Excavator

Thanks to this thread, I was feeling bags at Target at 8:00am.

I was 100% sure about the genie and thought the robot was the leprechaun.

Is the current Death Star a decent build? It looks more of a toy than a model. I'm tossing up between the DS or the SSD. Thoughts?

The Death Star is a playset, the SSD is a model. One has a ton of features and is a great place to display your latest SW minifigs, while the other looks impressive on a display shelf.

Go for the one that suits your needs.

I got a chance to buy 8386 Ferrari F1 Racer relatively cheap. I assume it's a fun build, anyone got experience with it?

not built both, just the excavator. its is an awesome build. I'm strangely turned off by the unimog. I like that it has power to the front and rear mounts, so would seem ideal as a PF MOCcing platform, but I've not seen much in the way of MOCs based on that.

Haven't been collecting the MiniFigs but I'm getting really tempted by how cool some of them look, want me one of them robots.

Would the only way to get older series 'figs be ebay now?

Bricklink is a great way to get the older series', often still sealed since a lot of sellers are experienced "bag feelers" (that sounds all sorts of wrong). Just make sure you compare the prices, as they vary wildly.

To my understanding it is a very simplified version of the 8458 Silver Champion. I only have experience with the 8458 but by the looks of it, the 8386 should be a worthwhile build, depending on price. Personally though I'd look for the 8458 Silver Champion or the 8461 Williams F1 team if I wanted a good Lego F1 set. Both are fantastic.
Edit: Speaking of those F1 sets I need some pieces to replace some on mine which were damaged in a move. Such a pain...

How much was it approximately?

Was it cheaper in the end than buying the unopened set from someone?

Is there a difference between light bluish gray and light gray?
They are different. Light bluish gray looks a bit more glossy and 'new' if it makes sense. Light gray is a little more muted color and to me it sometimes looks used even when it's new.

Even with my inexperience it was cheaper than buying used. I think I could have saved a lot from that too.

Is there any online store that ships lego outside of the US? I want to get the modulars, but lego.com doesn't ship here and most ebay listings have an unreasonable mark up.

I downloaded this app on iPhone called Timelapse Pro. I intend to record a time lapse video of my next LEGO build. It will probably be the slave 1, but I'm waiting for my Gorillapod to come from Amazon. In the mean time I decided to try my hand at a stop motion video with some minifigs. It's not the best but I just wanted to see how well it worked. I will probably create more in the future cause it's pretty fun. Anyway here it is.

So I've made the comment before about my sorting. I'm down to like, 10 pieces that I simply cannot figure out a way to classify. At all. It's driving me MAD because outside of just combining them as one (which sucks because there are pieces I do not own that may or may not fit), I can't think of a solution. Fffffff

Show us the pieces I'm sure we can help, or at least laugh ;)

This is part of my ordering setup, and there are a whole bunch of miscellaneous pieces that don't go with others... Annoying I agree

See pic below!

So the top left container is sorted I think...non-Hero Factory style ball/hinge/edge connectors.

The bottom left container is...No idea.

The right container is sort of like wheel connections, but sort of not. There's also those weird ass pieces in there that I can't place.

The loose pieces on the left are completely ridiculous and fit nothing.

On the right, there's turntable bases and a tall round...thing. I'm not sure where these would fit. I already have like, ~80-100 containers, but these just don't seem to belong. I don't want to have a separate container just for them, but then comes:

Not sure where to file that, either.

Help?

yeah, those pulley wheels I put with gears.

grey axles I currently have in a 'vehicles' box which has those, wheels, tyres and chassis parts

Found this the other day

Still works perfectly. Might pull it apart and make the second build, the truck. I found some other instructions online for it too, for a sports car that looked pretty cool.

I should probably have one of these - a vehicles box/container.

Also, what about those odd hospital bed looking pieces? I'm clueless.

I really adore this set. Mine has a few damaged pieces though, namely 2 of those beams that are supporting the wheels and a small piece in the front suspension. If you do the 3rd build post your impressions here. I've been debating to give that one a shot for a bit.
