Wow, that architecture is AWESOME on those buildings...
is there a sort of commonly-held understanding of when/what sets go out of production? you guys are talking about stuff going out of production as a fact - is there publicly available information about that, or is it just a sort of gut feeling?
So I don't get a 10% coupon because the nearest Lego store is 3 hours away? That seems like BS to me. It's not my fault they don't have one in WV and the closest one is in DC. What crap.
Holy Shit! I just finished the Lego 6991 Monorail set. I had no idea what exactly it did or why it is so popular, but my god. It's beautiful. Flashing lights, moving train cars. It ejects the two space capsules at their ports. It is fully automated. It is a wondrous thing of beauty. Here's a link to a video so you can see, but it's not mine:

My Death Star proposal did not go over very well with my better half. =|
Well, lots of time to let it sink in.![]()
Wow, you have one of the monorails?! THAT makes me jealous. Incredible stuff.
Gut feeling combined with word of mouth and past experience. Ghostmind is the expert, but most sets go out of production in a year or two. Not a long shelf life...gotta make room for the new stuff!
But then there are the extremely popular sets that end up in stores much longer than anyone predicted. Go back a few months and you will see people claiming you should really buy Fire Brigade by July if you want it, but it's still on shelves. Death Star and Medieval Village have both been in production forever. The latter is always supposedly disappearing, but you can still get it in many/most LEGO stores, as well as the online store.
Seems like official sources are pretty tight-lipped, but if you go into one of the stores and talk to an employee or two, you can get a sense of how long a particular set has been on the shelf and whether or not they are expecting to receive more of them. Despite the need for guesswork, however, it's always going to be a hot topic here since something is always going out of print, and popular sets that start vanishing from shelves escalate in price among online merchants rather quickly. It's really a crapshoot no matter how you slice it...you can still get many of the Pharaoh's Quest sets for close to MSRP, for instance, less in some cases, and that's been off shelves for a long time. The older modulars, on the other hand, are absurdly expensive (which is why everyone is anxious to acquire Fire Brigade by the end of the year).
Is Death Star really still in production or is it just that their is just tons of leftover stock still they have to get rid of? Doesn't make sense for it to be still in actual production when its a set that is no longer on most shelves

Here's my thoughts on what will be discontinued by year's end:
Pirates of the Caribbean - already making its official exit from the LEGO stores, and a lot of rolling clearance sales from retailers
Harry Potter - same as PotC
Fire Brigade - if we see it past Black Friday I will be surprised. I just don't see TLG keeping 5 modulars in stock come Spring when the next one is due. Which is why the Grand Emporium is also a dark horse, and may exit sooner than expected.
Medieval Market Village - stock on this has been up and down of late, but the consensus seems to be it is on its last legs.
Winter Village Bakery - by the end of the holiday season.
Maersk Train is another dark horse, as these kinds of sets are often removed very suddenly without the usual wind-down. Quite possibly additional trains (Yellow or Red Cargo) will follow suit.
Kingdoms Joust Without any other sets to support its theme currently, I think this one will be making a sooner than expected exit.
Imperial Shuttle Just a gut feeling that this one won't be around much longer.
I don't know if the Dino sets are going to make it into 2013, but if they do I don't expect them to last past Spring.

I'm really hoping that I'll be able to buy one or both of the big ships at a decent discount sooner rather than later.
I'm pretty sure the Fire Brigade is done. It's not shown in the fall catalog so the writing is on the wall. I'm pretty sure I will be buy the Grand Emporium next month during double points.
On a side note, sorry for my lack of thread activity lately, work is kicking my ass. I need to get back on my game so we can push towards OT2 sooner than later!
That is the first set I've parted out in a lot of about 35 sets that I bought for just $150. That's what is truly amazing.
I need to go into theft or drug dealing or prostitution or being a hitman so I can buy the other modulars.![]()
I have started selling off my huge DVD collection. Essentially I started looking at discs I have not taken off the shelf in the last 8 years or more, or have replaced with Blu Ray versions. Or will replace soon, like Lawrence of Arabia.
I am not getting much for them, but it is better than them collecting dust on a shelf. It gives me two benefits: I get money to buy sets, and I get shelf space to display said sets.
It does feel odd and hurts a little bit to sell them, but if I have not opened the case in close to a decade, it is time for it to go.
I got rid of 1 shelf of discs and got $80. 14 more shelves to sort through and figure out what I want to keep. I plan to get at least enough for Haunted House in the end. If I get enough for the house and another big set I will be so happy.I did something similar in that I sold my collection of Gamecube games and hardware to purchase the Haunted House. Best decision ever!
Judging from all the posts above regarding the Imperial Shuttle, I felt it necessary to share with LEGO-GAF that there are 2 up on Amazon Warehouse for $213.22!

So I think I got my wife into the idea of the winter sets. I have been doing research and it looks like they release one set a year and this years is the cottage. I assume the previous years set are all OOP correct? If so I should go ahead and jump on a good deal on ebay or some other location if I can find the Post office or Bakery?
Nicoga, here is where I pressure you again about the Imperial Shuttle.
I'm so close to grabbing it, but I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger with Grand Emporium, Tower Bridge, and Death Star on the horizon...*ungh*
I hear you man. My wife was looking through the new catalog last night and she saw tower bridge. She was like OH you need to get this! I just looked at her in disbelief. I said are you serious? I had pretty much just written off ever getting it due to the price. She said, it is British....you know I love British stuff. Look it even has a double decker bus. I am going to go broke.
Don't look at Tower Bridge as expensive. Look at it as one of the best price per brick sets out there. It is a steal when you look at it that way.
Also keep display space in mind when considering Tower Bridge. It takes up a decent amount of space vertically, but you need a very long shelf to set it on.
Yea she was looking at it last night and asked me how long it is. The measurments are like 40 inches long I believe. I don't know the height. I don't know if it would be an actual display piece. Id most likely assemble and disassemble it. I had to use all my display area for the SSD.
I had no choice. They forced my hand.

Even at this price it feels like a rip-offBut... there is no way I'm passing up the Rancor set so...
Re-upped my Amazon Prime membership, too. Was without it for about 6 weeks... felt like I was living in a third world country waiting on that 5 - 7 day shipping.
Why is this set so expensive? Is it because of the Jabba figure? $130 MSRP for 700 pieces is just nuts.
