is there a sort of commonly-held understanding of when/what sets go out of production? you guys are talking about stuff going out of production as a fact - is there publicly available information about that, or is it just a sort of gut feeling?

Gut feeling combined with word of mouth and past experience. Ghostmind is the expert, but most sets go out of production in a year or two. Not a long shelf life...gotta make room for the new stuff! :)

But then there are the extremely popular sets that end up in stores much longer than anyone predicted. Go back a few months and you will see people claiming you should really buy Fire Brigade by July if you want it, but it's still on shelves. Death Star and Medieval Village have both been in production forever. The latter is always supposedly disappearing, but you can still get it in many/most LEGO stores, as well as the online store.

Seems like official sources are pretty tight-lipped, but if you go into one of the stores and talk to an employee or two, you can get a sense of how long a particular set has been on the shelf and whether or not they are expecting to receive more of them. Despite the need for guesswork, however, it's always going to be a hot topic here since something is always going out of print, and popular sets that start vanishing from shelves escalate in price among online merchants rather quickly. It's really a crapshoot no matter how you slice it...you can still get many of the Pharaoh's Quest sets for close to MSRP, for instance, less in some cases, and that's been off shelves for a long time. The older modulars, on the other hand, are absurdly expensive (which is why everyone is anxious to acquire Fire Brigade by the end of the year).

So I don't get a 10% coupon because the nearest Lego store is 3 hours away? That seems like BS to me. It's not my fault they don't have one in WV and the closest one is in DC. What crap.

Hell, I am 30 minutes from their North American headquarters here in CT and there is no store for nearly 78 miles. It hurts, man. Why are there no stores in the state where their headquarters are? And when they do open, how do I get a job there?

I wonder if you contacted customer service if they'd give you one anyways (given that you guys would likely go to the store to use it?).

Holy Shit! I just finished the Lego 6991 Monorail set. I had no idea what exactly it did or why it is so popular, but my god. It's beautiful. Flashing lights, moving train cars. It ejects the two space capsules at their ports. It is fully automated. It is a wondrous thing of beauty. Here's a link to a video so you can see, but it's not mine:

That is some pretty slick engineering there.

My Death Star proposal did not go over very well with my better half. =|

Well, lots of time to let it sink in. ;)

Just get it and start building. Then it will be too late. I was shocked that my wife didn't stop me when I bought mine. I think she saw the crazed look in my eye when I saw the box in the store and knew that I needed it.

Is Death Star really still in production or is it just that their is just tons of leftover stock still they have to get rid of? Doesn't make sense for it to be still in actual production when its a set that is no longer on most shelves

The catalog lists it as "top rated." That has a lot of play in it I think. They probably just sell enough of them to make it worth their while to keep it going.

And to anyone that wants it: I got an email with two $10 off a $50 toy purchase to Toys R Us. The coupon is valid, Thursday the 6th only. Anyone wants it, send me a PM and I will email it to you. I do believe it is reward member specific, so as long as you are a member it should work.

Death Star is an anomaly that has been driving speculators crazy for the last few years, since many of them bought multiple sets hoping it was the next UCS Falcon. It's never been on that many store shelves to begin with (other than the LEGO store), with brief appearances at retail especially around Christmas time, but mainly available through the online stores (Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc). I think the commonality of most of its pieces makes it an easy set for LEGO to continue production on.

Here's my thoughts on what will be discontinued by year's end:

Pirates of the Caribbean - already making its official exit from the LEGO stores, and a lot of rolling clearance sales from retailers

Harry Potter - same as PotC

Fire Brigade - if we see it past Black Friday I will be surprised. I just don't see TLG keeping 5 modulars in stock come Spring when the next one is due. Which is why the Grand Emporium is also a dark horse, and may exit sooner than expected.

Medieval Market Village - stock on this has been up and down of late, but the consensus seems to be it is on its last legs.

Winter Village Bakery - by the end of the holiday season.

Maersk Train is another dark horse, as these kinds of sets are often removed very suddenly without the usual wind-down. Quite possibly additional trains (Yellow or Red Cargo) will follow suit.

Kingdoms Joust Without any other sets to support its theme currently, I think this one will be making a sooner than expected exit.

Imperial Shuttle "Yeah, I just got a funny feeling. Like I'm never gonna see her again."

I don't know if the Dino sets are going to make it into 2013, but if they do I don't expect them to last past Spring.

So, I have been lurking this thread for quite a while, and I now seek the collective wisdom of LEGOGAF. To make a long story short, I am quite terrible at greebling. If anyone has any tips, etc, I would love to receive them.

Harry Potter potentially on the chopping block makes me want to bite on Diagon Alley instead of Haunted House. Grr.

I'm really hoping that I'll be able to buy one or both of the big ships at a decent discount sooner rather than later.

Many places had them on clearance a few months ago. Some lego-gaffers go the queen anne's revenge for like 30 bucks. Target still had the black pearl in stock at full price this past weekend when i was there though. So that one is gonna happen eventually.

I'm pretty sure the Fire Brigade is done. It's not shown in the fall catalog so the writing is on the wall. I'm pretty sure I will be buy the Grand Emporium next month during double points.

On a side note, sorry for my lack of thread activity lately, work is kicking my ass. I need to get back on my game so we can push towards OT2 sooner than later!

I need to go into theft or drug dealing or prostitution or being a hitman so I can buy the other modulars. :(

I have started selling off my huge DVD collection. Essentially I started looking at discs I have not taken off the shelf in the last 8 years or more, or have replaced with Blu Ray versions. Or will replace soon, like Lawrence of Arabia.

I am not getting much for them, but it is better than them collecting dust on a shelf. It gives me two benefits: I get money to buy sets, and I get shelf space to display said sets.

It does feel odd and hurts a little bit to sell them, but if I have not opened the case in close to a decade, it is time for it to go.

I did something similar in that I sold my collection of Gamecube games and hardware to purchase the Haunted House. Best decision ever!

I got rid of 1 shelf of discs and got $80. 14 more shelves to sort through and figure out what I want to keep. I plan to get at least enough for Haunted House in the end. If I get enough for the house and another big set I will be so happy.

Is there a way to instruct FedEx to leave my Moria with security or the building manager? They called me twice today but I was in a meeting and now the status says it's back at FedEx. I see an option to tell them to hold it there, but I'd rather they just leave it here.

They deliver Lego to me just about every week and I always tell them to leave it; wish they would have just done that on their own.

I decided to wait and let my parents buy me the Shuttle from the Lego store for a Christmas present. That way I am not spending my money on it, but I still get the VIP points. If I get Christmas presents while I am there for myself and then just some random sets I want to just buy I can load up. I must stay strong and stick to this plan.

When I go to the Lego store all I need is my VIP Card right? That is how they link it to the account?

I'm in a similar scenerio. Been selling off my Sims collection...and I have a freakin' huge collection of Sim games - PC, console, posters, swag, you name it. All that I have to sell now are the PC games...and that should net a ton of money for more LEGO!

something crawled out of under my wallclock and attacked my swamp monster!

a wild shelob appeared!

Even at this price it feels like a rip-off :) But... there is no way I'm passing up the Rancor set so...

Re-upped my Amazon Prime membership, too. Was without it for about 6 weeks... felt like I was living in a third world country waiting on that 5 - 7 day shipping.

So I think I got my wife into the idea of the winter sets. I have been doing research and it looks like they release one set a year and this years is the cottage. I assume the previous years set are all OOP correct? If so I should go ahead and jump on a good deal on ebay or some other location if I can find the Post office or Bakery?

Go on amazon.com and search for "lego winter"

they have the bakery, post office, 2012 winter advent calendar and snowman polybag all at reasonable prices.

toy shop is a bit expensive but it looks like a really cool set worth the money

And yeah I think these would make awesome display pieces for the holidays

I'm so close to grabbing it, but I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger with Grand Emporium, Tower Bridge, and Death Star on the horizon...*ungh*

I hear you man. My wife was looking through the new catalog last night and she saw tower bridge. She was like OH you need to get this! I just looked at her in disbelief. I said are you serious? I had pretty much just written off ever getting it due to the price. She said, it is British....you know I love British stuff. Look it even has a double decker bus. I am going to go broke.

Don't look at Tower Bridge as expensive. Look at it as one of the best price per brick sets out there. It is a steal when you look at it that way.

Also keep display space in mind when considering Tower Bridge. It takes up a decent amount of space vertically, but you need a very long shelf to set it on.

Yea she was looking at it last night and asked me how long it is. The measurments are like 40 inches long I believe. I don't know the height. I don't know if it would be an actual display piece. Id most likely assemble and disassemble it. I had to use all my display area for the SSD.

It is about 14" high I believe. I cleared off the top of a bookcase and put it up there for a few months, as it looks fantastic. But damn, is it not a treasure trove of awesome MOC pieces. And if you want tan cheese slopes, have you hit the jackpot with that set.

Lego Gaf + Dark Souls Gaf, rejoice!

Ever since completing Dark Souls about a fortnight ago and loving the absolute shit out of it (play it if you haven't!), I had been toying with the idea of making my foray into MOCin' with a "Legofied" DS knight clad in the Elite Knight armor set (my favourite set in the game and an iconic set for the DS universe, too). Ambitious, I know, but I figured that I'd at least come out of it with some humbling knowledge.

Anyway, I decided to take a chibi approach, as that's what I was feeling at the time and it seems to have translated nicely, if I do say so myself. Also, the reason he is sitting down is because I am attempting to replicate the bonfire scene depicted in the second picture, so yes, a Lego bonfire is certainly in order.

I spent the entirety of today creating the torso and the helm consumed the entirety of last night. The helm was killing me for a good hour; I just couldn't figure out how to nail the aesthetic, but luckily, it came to me. The torso I based fundamentally on my previous MOC ("Steve", according to the girlfriend; posted on page 315), but I more or less just went mental with experimentation. All I can say is, thank heavens I bought Ewok Attack, Cannibal Escape and Apple Tree House some time ago!

Keep in mind, it is still a WIP, so some pieces need to be sourced in their correct colour, shoulder armor needs to be added, etc. As always, feel free to give me any pointers/feedback!

So, without further ado, my Chibi Elite Knight. Praise the sun!

Cheers, guys.

(Apologies for the detail-lacking photos. It's nigh on bedtime for me and this little guy has drained me, both physically and mentally, so I thought I'd just get something up ASAP).

Why is this set so expensive? Is it because of the Jabba figure? $130 MSRP for 700 pieces is just nuts.
