Things I feel are likely:

Treebeard
A balrog
something with saruman
something with sauron
something with another ringwraith, probably with a fell beast.

I'd imagine minas tirith would be too similar to helm's deep to be the big set....

The only way to do Minas Tirith justice is as a HUGE set. Like UCS scale or larger.

Merry & Pippin's Escape! (with Uruk-Hai)
Bridge of Khazad-Dum (Balrog & Gandalf the Grey)
Saruman's Plan (Palantir Stand + Saruman + Wormtongue)
Last Alliance (Sauron + Isildur + Elrond)
Witch King's Attack (Witch King with Fell Beast + Theoden + Merry + Eowyn)

With Star Wars 7 coming out in 2015 (followed by 8 in 2018 and 9 in 2021 probably) that would mean that LEGO's 10-year license renewal would cover them for all 3 films.

Add to that LEGO's agreement with Disney/Marvel, and of course LotR and the Hobbit, and we have many years of cool new licensed sets coming our way.

Decided to go with the modular that first caught my eye when I started reading this forum, The Grand Emporium. Not really concerned about what ones are going OOP because I'm sure I'll end up buying them over the next weeks anyway. I hope I don't regret not picking up the Imperial Shuttle though,I just wanted to build something different besides Star Wars ships (thats all that I've ever built so far). I should have the funds for it next month though...

You really can't go wrong with any of the UCS Star Wars sets. Wurst case you sit on them for 5 years and sell them for double what you paid.

Swwwwwwweeeeet!! Looks like they are going to maybe have Gollum in another set then, wonder which one. Hopefully not an edge of cliff fight for the ring set with Sam, Frodo and Gollum again. Guess there really isn't much they could do with Gollum not involving Sam and Frodo only.

Why not Osgiliath?

Frodo, Sam, Gollum, Faramir, Gondorian, 2 Mordor Orcs, Ringwraith, Fell Beast.... I might be going overboard.

Or any other sets involving combinations of those characters. Dead Marshes. Forbidden Pool. Haradrim Encounter (Oliphaunts!)

Also I picked this up a couple days ago:

So I'm disassembling a bunch of sets to make room for newer ones. I've put the pieces in ziploc bags, but am now faced with a dilemma:

Should I put the baggies back into the sets' original boxes (I keep all my boxes), or should I label the bags and put them all in one large generic box?

Using the original boxes would be more orderly. But using one large box would be more space-efficient, as all the pieces could be packed into one generic box, and I could continue to store the original boxes by nesting them inside one another (like Russian nesting dolls).

Any tips/advice?

Just organize all your stuff together. Get sorting containers, like these:

Sort by piece type, then hide the boxes away. Then you have room to keep adding to your collection and rebuild later.

I keep all my boxes broken down and behind bookcases. I have a large accordion file for all the instruction manuals.

EDIT: I was just at Target, and did not think about getting the mini fig pre order until my wife and I were already pulling out of the parking lot. Damn.

Ah, but I prefer to keep sets complete and separate from one another; I don't mingle pieces from different sets. Perhaps one day I will, but for the time being I don't.

If I don't place the sets back in their respective boxes, I just might start flattening the boxes though. That seems like a reasonable idea.

Not into MOCing I see. :( Gotcha.

Good thing about mixing it all is it just makes storage a lot easier. The pieces are also highly organized so if I ever do want to rebuild sets I can quickly get the parts I want and just rebuild them.

Two very different build experiences...

I need to get the Vampyre Castle. Eventually at least.

How did you like the Haunted House build? I thought it was a good build, and a nice change of pace for a building after so many modulars. I HATED how you built all the interior details first, then added them in later though. Usually without any direction that they were to go there.

I picked up the $1 Chase McCain minifigure at Target. He has prints on both sides of his torso. He's made in China so quality is on par with the collectible minifigures.

This. I opened the first bag and was like "wut?" I would have much rather built the furniture, etc as I was building the respective rooms.

Other than that, it was a fun build, but I think I actually had more fun with the Castle though.

So I didn't realize the series 8 minifigs were only $3 and that there would be a bat and alien.

I blind bought one cuz I went to Target for a ghost polybag and they didn't have any. Wtf is up with that anyway?

I ended up with Hamlet, which is pretty cool, but i'd really like the bat and alien. Any easy tricks to figuring it out?

For the alien, feel for the bottom piece. The bottom is a 1x2x2 slope piece, and it sticks out a lot when you feel for it.

For the bat, the top of the figure is odd because of the wings. The arms stick out at an angle instead of being flush against the body.

Ah, makes sense, thanks for the tips!

I've said that I'll go for the pet shop when I have the money/space, but when you hear of a model like the Fire Station or Grand Emporium going on of stock you get a slight niggling feeling of desire at the back of your head. I need to ride this period out and stay strong.

The plot thickens for the Grand Emporium:

"Out of stock, expected ship date 7 Dec 2012"

So wait, they'll sell it to me now? What happens if I buy it and they never have any more to ship?

EDIT: I pulled the trigger. double vip plus free shipping plus spending the one dose of vip I already had saved up means it is the cheapest shopping option available. I don't care if it's not goign out of print any more. I'd already convinced myself I could part with the dough.

Double edit:
I'm totally buying the lighthouse alongside batman/aquaman/mr freeze next year so Aquaman has a place to live.

All this talk of Grand Emporium going out of stock caused me to pick it up while double points was still going on.

I was also tempted to post a guess the set picture in jest for a different smaller set I bought from Target. I had picked up the camper but when I got it home I noticed the tape seemed a bit odd. Turns out somebody had opened it, filled it with puzzle pieces, some foot ball trading cards, a battery and a breath mint then shoved all the emptied bags back in the box and either returned it or put it on the shelf if they were shoplifitng. Really weird. Thankfully Target took it back.

I wonder if anyone can help me (or if this is the right place to ask).

I found this excellent Thunderbird 2 MOC on Flickr and have been trying to model it in LDD with the intent of ordering the parts from Bricklink to build it. I've contacted the original creator, and while he's happy for me to attempt it he doesn't have any instuctions/parts as he builds "in the brick" and it was a few years back. I'm fairly new to creating stuff like this, so have made a valiant attempt to put something together, but I feel like I'm falling flat in a few areas, specifically how the engines are attached and where the nose meets the central area. Can anyone offer any suggestions or tips? It'd be much appreciated, and I promise to return with a completed model once it's finished!

Here's my LXF file as it stands so far
Some more photos of the model

Sooo... Is there any advice for MOC-ing, other than "just start building" ? I wanna' try my hand at a scene from one of the God of War games, not sure how many blocks of brown/blue/whatever else I might need just yet.

Looking at the back photo the boosters seem to be slightly off which is throwing me, Otherwise I would have just suggested a 1x1 technic block and a half connector peg half cross axel bit.

Yeah, that's what I would do but it looks from some of the other photos that it's something else attaching it. I guess if I can make it work then it doesn't really matter how. Also trying to figure out how that yellow stripe near the nose is attached, obviously whatever's doing it inside is hidden away and i'm not sure that I've built the nose in the same way to attach it. Will keep tooling away at it I suppose!

either a snotty piece inside somewhere, and the engine is just attached to a 1x1 stud (either plate or brick, can't tell). Or possibly an axle coming out somewhere, but thats less likely IMO, can't see where it'd come through. Looks like he's used green headlight bricks towards the rear, to support the rear wing, so there could be an axle threaded through there.

yellow stripe will be snot too. The middle part is a window ledge plate piece standing on end. Possibly a green tile in front, just wedged in (looks like it has bevelled edges?). under the curved 1x1 bricks there would be space for something like a 1x2 technic brick, and then the plate's studs could fit into that.

Yeah, I figured something along those lines, I'm using snot pieces elsewhere (lantern etc) but just having trouble with the placement and getting things to fit. In the file I linked to I've got the yellow stripe part itself built for example, but I'm not sure how it attaches. It could be that LDD isn't ideal for this sort of thing, but I don't have the luxury of the bricks at home to play with, so I'm giving this a shot. Thanks for the help though!

It helps to have a somewhat basic idea, but "just start building" is good. Also, keep in mind if parts of your sets will be hidden. If the section will not be visible, you can use odd colors for them and save the colors you need. The StarWars sets do this a lot. I do it a lot as well. Under many of my moc buildings are lots of orange and yellow bricks supporting the floors.

Poor orange bricks, all neglected and lonely, out of sight. At least they serve a very important supporting role.

I now feel like I should build a MOC using all the orange bricks I own as soon as I get home from work!
But I know I won't actually do it, I have a couple games and a cat waiting for my attention.
And other house tasks, but we don't need to talk about such hideously dull things.

Oh, if I had lots of orange I would SO make a building out of it. But when you only have like ten or so random bricks of them from sets, you cannot do much. The large amount of orange is one of the things that excites me about the new train.

I want tons of yellow, orange, dark green, and dark blue bricks to make buildings with.
