I thought about this, and I don't think I'll do it. Fairly large initial investment and you'll need to wait a year at least for prices to rise a decent amount.

I'm just going to buy sets I like, but be careful with the boxes and instructions etc. Then later on if I'm bored or don't really need it anymore, it should at least recover its costs and let me buy something else. I'm doing that now with a couple of my Technics

I'm guessing they'll start out with relatively cheap sets, and cram them full of minifigs, with each set maybe having a unique figure so that fans have to buy lots of different sets.

If it does well i'm sure you'll see larger castle/siege type stuff later in the year. Not like they can't just lazily recycle their kingdoms sets with a few tweaks..
 
I think the problem they'll have with LotR is that all the best locations are these giant, massive places that can't realistically be sized down for LEGO.

All I really want is a kick ass hobbit hole that wraps all the way around with grass on top.

That, and a set of when they camp under the Stone Trolls...

I wonder if things are a bit skewed because of the Royal Joust set, which - afaik - is the signature medieval set for this year.

Still not a fan of the line but I'm sure I'll end up buying just about all of them, for MOC if nothing else. Some cool looking castle pieces and design techniques in Helm's Deep that I don't think I've ever seen before.
 
Picked up the Imperial V-Wing Starfighter today at Target for fifteen bucks. Halfway through building it and found out I got two left sides of an angled piece instead of a left and right piece. Ordering a replacement part was real easy, just fill out a form and give them my address. No questions asked yet but they said if they have one they'll e-mail or call. If anyone has ordered one in the past how long did it take to get to you?

just collected mine from the supermarket. Now, do I hold onto it until my daughter's birthday in June, or break it open?

I also have a Star Wars Venator from ebay just turned up.

I wish I'd stop getting distracted from my main wish list. Not grabbed any of them yet :sigh:

Took longer than a standard order. About a week. This was just post Christmas though so the post could have been a little slack.

Can't wait to pick up my ship when I get back home. Thanks again mrklaw for the tip.

I know what you mean. Learning PotC is going away for awhile has thrown my buy list into complete disarray.

I have no qualms about cracking this puppy open, kid is still working on Whitecap Bay...and I've decided to get her Friends for her birthday for some reason ;p
 
So what are everyone's main wishlists at the moment?

For me, it's about getting the rest of the Modular Buildings, specifically the Pet Shop and the upcoming Town Hall, and eventually the Green Grocer.

Then the Tower Bridge is also a big priority, as is the Volkswagon T1 and the Shuttle Expedition.

Debating the Death Star/SSD at tax time.

At some point I would like to delve more into the Architecture sets.

And of course LotR is coming this summer...
 
This is the order I'm settled on for the time being, I think.

The London Escape
King's Castle
Diagon Alley
Hogwarts
Hogwarts Castle
Medieval Market Village (second copy)
The Black Pearl
Fire Brigade
Grand Emporium
Pet Shop
Royal Joust x2 and possibly more. I'm actually considering buying as many as eight of these depending on how the first double build comes together.

I'll decide where LotR and Town Hall fit in once they're actually available. I'd love to put together Green Grocer as well but given my massive medieval project it's unlikely to happen for the foreseeable future.
 
My daughters 7th birthday this weekend. She wants Lego and is gaga for Harry Potter right now so...

This is the biggest Lego set I've every bought. I never had one as big as this growing up. It has more pieces than the Battle for Endor set I got my son at Christmas. Her birthday is on Sunday and there is a party so I think I'll just give it to her on Saturday morning and we can start the construction then. Anyone ever build this bigun? Any tips?
 
order, not sure. But here are my big wants:

- Grand Emporium
- Pet Shop
- Tower Bridge
- Imperial Shuttle
- Fire Brigade.
- Tie Fighter (have the previous x-wing to go with it)

I estimate that buying the first 5 on that list will give me enough VIP points to get the Tie Fighter for free.

Have these sitting in the house waiting to be built:
- Venator cruiser
- Queen Annes Revenge
- cafe corner (parts put together from bricklink and our collection. Waiting on an ipad so we can read the instructions properly as only have digital instructions)
 
Here are the themes I am considering for the first MOC challenge...

-Discovery
-Lost and found
-Lost but not forgotten

All fairly simple, same basic idea. I want the first one to be pretty easy. Any preferences?

I know some folks would like to see an MOC challenge with a specific set, or piece limits, stuff like that...let's see how it goes fairly laissez-faire and then if there is an obvious problem we can get into some more specific rules. I do have some loose rules typed up ready to roll.

Challenge will probably start officially tomorrow.

Nah, easy peasy. Its an 8-14 set so it'll probably be nicely broken into bags per section - likely one bag per building for instance. And the instructions will be really clear. you shouldn't have any major issues.

Its the larger sets 14+ where you open multiple bags at the same time that can be a PITA. Especially if you don't have dedicated space and are borrowing the dining table so need to clear away after each session...
 
Is there any way to "rent" Lego sets? It would be fun to build something big like the SSD, but I have no desire to keep it around in my house. Think anybody would be interested in purchasing a used SSD set for, say, 90% of the retail price? Bricklink only has new sets on the marketplace

I'm definitely going for the Fire Brigade first, then perhaps the Medieval Market, since they're going to probably go out of print first. Past that I'll go for the other in-print modulars and the Shuttle Expedition. I'd love to pick up some of the more classic Star Wars ships (Falcon, TIE, X-Wing specifically) as well, but right now I'm less concerned about those. Would like to Bricklink the first three modulars as well, but that's probably for down the road.

I'm also in the process of putting back together my Monorail Transport from my childhood - I've dug out 500ish of the 731 parts (as well as the box and manual), so at some point I'll need to put together a Bricklink order for the rest since I can't imagine that I'll actually be able to find all of the parts in the remnants of my childhood collection.

Yes. Buy SSD for full retail price. open box carefully, keep instructions in mint condition. Build, enjoy. Sell on bricklink for 90% of original value or alternatively wait 12-18 months and sell for 150% of the value

Yup, I am keeping everything from my SSD in case I sell later. Eventhe bags, though I don't know how useful they would be as they aren't resealable...
 
How do you guys deal with disassembling your sets? Do you break them down into big chunks of bricks or do you take it completely apart? I'm guessing ziploc bags are the way to go?

If you sort your pieces for MOC's, plastic containers are cheap at Wal-Mart. If not, large plastic bags are probably your best bet, yes.

Oh man, finding pieces still stuck together in a box of loose pieces drives me nuts >.<
 
Maybe if we do a MOC thing our first theme should be "Build your own LotR set" since none of us seem all too excited about the real sets.
 
Looking through Brickset I am surprised that Lego never made the Flying Dutchman, seems like an obvious kit with all the other PotC sets.
