The LEGO Thread

This was my first Lego event and I really enjoyed it. My daughter was constantly pulling me in different directions though so I didn't have a chance to get more than one quick shot at any given time.

The designs were great and the builders were very friendly. I'm glad I left the 1.5 year old at home though-she would have been a wreck.

Inspired!

Strangely, everything in this store was 20% more expensive.

Yeah, this year was the first time I'd ever gone to any kind of Lego convention, and it was a blast for me and my son. I recommend anyone who likes Lego to go to one sometime, it's really cool what people come up with.

I would really love to get the technique down to build cliffs and mountainous terrain like that. It never fails to impress.

I guess I mostly just need the pieces for it. That is a LOT of slanted gray of all types.

e: The water there is quite good as well.

The best option is to create a small vignette style piece. This would be a great start to recreate and study! While it's a different style/scale/etc, it's a good practice to get a feel for it.

I built Pet Shop today and also started on Town Hall. Meanwhile, my wife built Diagon Alley. Wow, Diagon Alley is amazing. I would like to buy another just for the amazing parts included in the set. All 3 buildings look fantastic when built. I'll post pics soon. My wife may be on the hunt for Hogwarts next!

We will both work together to finish Town Hall tomorrow. I look forward to having all 4 modulars together.

I finally grabbed Gandalf Arrives (and 2 series 7 mini-figs, the hippie and the viking), and even though it's, like all the LOTR sets, well over-priced, I cannot do any but strongly recommend it to everyone. Gandalf simply rocks, and the wagon design is lovely.

Still need to get:

- Helm's Deep
- Weathertop
- Ork Forge
- Moria/Balin's Tomb

I'm really on the fence with Shelob Attacks. Does anyone have that yet? Thoughts?

Shelob Attacks is the only set I can't find outside of tru. Soon. But glad to see more love for Gandalf Arrives. Such a small and cheap set, but oh so wonderful.

I have it. It's my least favorite of the initial LotR sets. Needed it for Samwise and dat Gollum, but I'm not crazy about Shelob and the little landscape part is kinda silly. Nice to get two dark green vines, but that's about it.

For anyone into Ninjago, Sunday at SDCC is TLG's big reveal of the future of the franchise, which apparently has been their most popular non-licensed theme ever.

I just want a cheap way to get Ninja mini figs. I want a Ninja army!

LOL, now that my son has moved on to Pokemon, I may now inherit his ninja army.

EDIT: As an aside, I FINALLY finished R2-D2. What a great build and an awesome looking model! Going to keep him on my desk for a long time.

If I find the quote again, I will post it. I would assume the mean per set though, and not total volume, because Ninjago was (is?) selling like crazy, but of course Space and Castle themes have been around for decades.

In my part of the world Ninjago is not popular at all, Castle & Star Wars is getting snapped up easily though.

Wow, I don't know where all these stealth releases are coming from, but in addition to the Sungnyemun Architecture set, they also have the CUUSOO Hayabusa set available in America! (maybe I just missed the announcement or something?)

Dammit, I want it so bad, but I'm on a tight budget + the $/piece ratio is not great for the set + Steam sale is going on + I just bought the Minecraft set. D:

FYI: It also appears that the Minecraft set is temporarily out of stock again. Glad I jumped on it when I did!

LEGO is weird with their releases, just 2 months ago a week after the new Star Wars sets have been shown, they are a available in my country. Same for the Creators & LotR, they were supposed to be here next month but came over 2 months early.

Meanwhile, Marvel & DC sets come 3 months after international release. Still waiting for the Monster Fighter sets here.

Hoping for the 9398 Crawler to suddenly appear here very soon. Maybe that's why they're trying to push the Unimogs & Excavators here at 10% off.

My 7 year daughter loves it. I think the tv show has a lot to do with it and to be honest it's fairly decent for a kid's show.

This surprises me. More than Space or Kingdoms? I'm very interested in the statistics on this.

I'm not surprised. I have one small Ninjago set. It was the first set my wife got me when I expressed interest in getting back into LEGO. Whenever we have friends with kids over, they'll go rooting through the box or the folder of manuals, and it never fails - "Ninjago!!" as soon as they find one of the ninjas or something. Every time. They always seem to root it out from my mountain of other themes, and they're always excited when they find it.

I imagine they're counting numerous iterations of Space and Castle themes as distinct themes to make those numbers work. On those terms I find it totally believable.

The 23rd is the expected release date for 9398. Soon!

While this may be the case, it still blows me away. It's a unique theme...I wonder if the battle aspect is what does it? Like Beybladez or something?

Have been thinking of getting the Super Car and one other large Technic set. What second set would you guys recommend that has RC functionality? (IR Receiver, Remote, 2 motors and a servo)?

The only set hat has those things is 9398 crawler, out soon. The servo motor is brand new and that's the first set it's in.

Excavator doesn't have a servo but is steered by tank controls so no need for one. It's a great set with tons of functions

Oh, I didn't realise that the servo is new. How do other RC Technics steer?

There aren't any with wheels.

Excavator and bulldozer I think are the only RC technics sets, and they control each caterpillar track separately, so you steer by just moving one forward and not the other (or one forward and one back)

There was a small RC car released a few years ago which has a self contained RC chassis that you can bolt a body to, but it's fairly limited
