Just Bricklink'd two sets worth of this awesome little Tumbler by a MOCer known as Zeto Vince. Very cool. I'd rank it up there with Wetwired's version when considering this scale. Two great models by two great designers. It can't fit a minifig inside, unfortunately, so Wetwired wins there

Heading to Edmonton for job interviews this week, I find it weird there's no Lego store in West Edmonton Mall but Calgary's on the way so I'll pop in there and get some pick a brick stuff just because.

Weird. Last thing I ordered from Lego was Grand Emporium to get the Hulk promo. Then in June I got the Death Star at a store Whedon vacation. Seems random.

Okay, so I was messing with some proof of concept stuff tonight. I have been thinking of making a theater to add to the modular buildings. The issue with it is that if I want a really great number of seats, the building has to be HUGE. Like, well beyond a normal modular.
I had been thinking I could pull off having a lot of seats but still get it within the 48x48 baseplate (larger than regular modular, but not completely obscene). I had also toyed with the notion of making the theater 64x64, meaning I would use four regular baseplates to make on gigantic building, but also have a ton of seats to look like a true monster screen.
Ten seats across. Either two stair cases (one on each end) and one entrance walkway.
Or one stair case down the middle, and one entrance to the theater. This will save about 4 to 6 studs in space, but still too massive for a 32x32 regular baseplate. This pic also shows how it would look with just five seats across.
I think the five seats across still looks great, but I do kinda want a HUGE theater to house tons of mini figs. I also had an idea for the actual screen that would require something larger than a 32x32 plate.
So if I do a 48x48, I cannot get as many seats, but it will still be a Mega Modular. But if I go to a 64x64 situation, it will be a Super Mega Modular, but be super imposing. Which I kind of want, but not sure if I honestly have the pieces to achieve.
Keep in mind the pics are simply to gauge how much space seating would take (I already have plans for the lobby and other areas and how to squeeze them in), so the final results will most likely have different colors (outside of the chairs), but the spacing should remain exactly the same.
Does the 5 seats per row still click, or does going for a 10 seat row and making it HUGE work better. I am thinking IMAX for Lego figs.

That is where my gut it going. I am just trying to think of the logistics of making a building that large. Trying to think of how to make the four baseplates modular where I can separate them to move them easily, but still look cohesive. I want the seating to go back even further than that too. Maybe 8 rows of seats, which would be exactly 32 studs deep, leaving a fair amount at the front of the auditorium for empty floor than the screen which would be the wall.
I am thinking that having the break in the middle and having a technic post to connect them in the middle of the seating. The lobby should not be too huge though. Enough for concessions and maybe a ticket booth. The second floor of the lobby area would obviously be the projection booth, while the second floor of the theater area would just be more theater. Perhaps the speakers on the wall behing the parts that lock down onto the previous floor to keep it in place.
Sounds interesting and really cool. Would like to see the finished project.
Could you do actual work in progress pictures? I'm a really big fan of your custom modulars but always curious how you do the structural mechanics and what not.

No problem. I have been approaching these buildings based on what pieces I have. The Cafe was simply me assembling something with outside details, then figuring out what it could actually be, then morphing the rest to fit the theme. The Corner Florist was going from the point of "what pieces do I have, and what could I make?". The theater idea is something I have been thinking of for a long time, and now that I have the seats (Thank you, wife!), I can do it. With making it a HUGE building, I am worried about actually having enough pieces to pull it off. I don't want to take down the other buildings, but I might have to. If anything gets killed off, it will be the still incomplete Sweet Shop that I have.
The blessing and curse of a theater is that there will be minimal windows to it. It is a blessing because I have no windows left. It is a curse, because it makes it harder to give outside flourish to the building. And also takes more bricks.
The biggest challenge will be keeping the giant auditorium area structurally sound, as there will not be tons of support. Keeping that stable but also very tall and open has been a concern. But the idea I have for the screen I really want to do, but keep secret until I finish it.
Row of 8 with one side stairs/entrance? Depends hat you're going for. A multiplex is a lot bigger than normal shops but then would sit in the middle of the street. An art house cinema would be a more normal building, but have smaller auditoria. If you're integrating into a street I'd definitely try for a 32/48 wide, make it deeper out the back if necessary - play with the orientation of the seating.

It will be one screen only. As for orientation, I was planning on having the front wall of the building actually be the side wall of the auditorium. That way the screen would be a side wall of the building (up against the neighboring building.) I still think 32 wide is too tiny unless it is like a fifteen seat theater, but is easier to pull off.
Still thinking of just one stair along the edge, and a blank area on the other side for entrance from the back. Still in planning stages now. Either way, I need more baseplates. I have a bunch of 16x32 plates left, but need some larger ones. Unless I build the theater on top of four of the lunar crater plates.

Some more BL parts came in so I have now almost finished two sets of wings for my star fighter.

The way it's going there will be three levels of wings with the middle being a single large wing. This set is the front 2 of the top level while the bottom will have 2 sets. All the wings are done now but in rianbow colours right now so working on the body of the fighter while waiting for BL orders to come in.
Trying to decide how to do a nice vent system on the plate or perhaps some weapons. Maybe even some flick fire!

So glad that Lasting Toys is close to home. Took the family there today but didn't walk away with anything great. My buddy got a few boxes of the electrified train tracks which he was quite pleased with.
I had almost convinced my six year old to get the Spongebob Crab Shack when she noticed the display of old Belville sets. Terrible. Got a couple more series 2 figs, an Olympic one and some Duplo for the youngest. The wife was impressed with the three Christmas sets so I think we'll be getting them soon.

I would love to and I did think about it but with the current design the wings are all one brick thick with the studs facing forward. Next time I'll have a different wing design and incorporate a swivel section.
We picked up the Batman Funhouse Escape set and my son absolutely loves it. Great little set, nice little features like a trapdoor, a little track where a railcar rolls down, the Riddler has his own bust in the funhouse (lol), an awesome Batpod even.
...and of course, those minifigs are awesome. Harley *and* the Riddler? Yes please.

I know! The minifigs really sold it for us. for some reason I didn't even know this set existed until today. It was also the last one on the shelf at our Lego store.
That set at $40 is a great price for everything you get (including a second Riddler head!). In the USA, it is a TRU (or LEGO store) exclusive, so it has been a bit hard to find.
Picked up this little polybag today - going to use its components to add to the Bag End set.

Would you be able to fit in a balcony on the 2nd floor of the theater to squeeze in some more seats? It could have more of a classical theater feel.

Just scored the Lego Star Wars Republic Frigate for $79 at Wal Mart. The Pod racing set is also on clearance. Pretty stoked, Quinlan Vos minifig!!

It's all come to about AU75 from 5 different vendors (4 local, 1 OS). There're a few oddball pieces, which makes sticking to 1 or 2 vendors virtually impossible. Depending on how much I like it, I might source some additional pieces in another color. Having a convoy of Tumblers in, say, black, grey and tan would be awesome.

Keep it. Even if you don't build it (and you should. It is a fun build. I did both towers simultaneously.), it has TONS of great pieces to use in MOCs. Aside from more cheese slopes than any sane person could want, you get tons of single and double sided 1x1 bricks with studs on side. Also a ton of 1x1 bricks with the short handle bar on them. It really is a fantastic source for detail pieces to use later.
I had thought of that, but that just makes a more complicated logistical nightmare of pulling off the stairs. But it would be more stable.
However, I picked up four 32x32 baseplates today to start on the theater, and this is the progress from fooling around tonight (still kind of proof of concept staging).
The two plates, but with peg holes to join them together.
The backside. Under the seats is a miss mash of colors and pieces, but it is merely for support.
The two plates joined together. I expect the seats to go back at least two more rows or so before stopping and beginning the lobby.
I could make the theater smaller and pull it off rather quickly, but I am liking the challenge of a HUGE building. I have also realized that I have nowhere near enough pieces to pull this building off. Especially once I hit the roof. I could take down my Neighborhood Cafe and Corner Florist, but I think this MOC will be a long term one. Just something that I will slowly keep adding to as I get the pieces. The sheer size of it is invigorating, and will be quite a challenge. At least I can get the ground floor and many interior details done. But getting it high enough and putting a roof on it will take some time.
This will be the long game...
It varies. Sometimes it is just plain bricks, but sometimes they have tons of specialty bricks on the wall. Just look at the sheer number of seats my wife grabbed at a PAB wall.
For hinges and wing pieces, the Millenium Falcon is a fantastic source for them. Tons of both type of pieces in it, and a fantastic build to boot.
really? how many pieces are in it? I would have thought mine being larger would be more expensive than that.

The original was posted a LONG while back, no? Glad to see this pop up again! Flimsy to me just makes me think it was designed as a display piece. Is it something you can easily reinforce??

While spending a three day weekend in Chicago for our seven year anniversary, my wife and I popped into the Lego store where I grabbed the Spiderman set and she did a few pick a bricks for some Lego jewelry she is going to make and sell.

So I stayed up way to late working on this last night. Somebody said it before (I think it was Lorderror) but this thing is really flimsy. I had a really hard time assembling it as parts of it would break off every time I tried to add new bits.
I've been slowly gathering parts as I make orders on BL but not certain I will continue if it's so flimsy. Having said that all I would do is display it........

Actually, I was wondering if it was a unique creation or whether it came out of a movie/anime/comic book etc.
I decided to make a spreadsheet of the sets I've bought/I'd like to pick up in the near future. In part it's to get an idea of what budgeting I will need, and the other part is to compare the MSRP to the actual price I've paid. It's both exciting and depressing to see how many sets I still have yet to get!
It also makes me regret getting rid of all my early 80's to late 90's lego sets I had growing up. I ended up giving them to my younger cousin because I figured I'd never use them again. Now I want them back! Hmm, he's just graduated high school, I wonder if he'd be interested in giving them back to me? perhaps for a monetary incentive.
