Okay Guys. I got into the modular game late and my first purchase was Fire Brigade. I fully believe I can find a good deal on Green Grocer and Maybe even Corner Shop in the next year or so. At least that is my plan. Market Street is way out of the price range though so would it be easier for me to purchase individual bricks and build it based off the list of bricks in an instruction booklet? What is my best option. I am a completionist and it will drive me nuts if I don't have them all. I don't really care if its an actual boxed set in this case. I just want the finished building on my street. What should I do?

I did cafe corner by getting a list of pieces from rebrickable and then ordering the ones I didn't have from bricklink and Lego.com depending which was cheapest. I think green grocer is something you can probably buy for an ok price, but cafe corner and market street you are better off with building from scratch yourself

Just completed the worst step in LEGO set history.

Stoked - just picked up http://brickset.com/detail/?Set=9394-1 for almost 50% off here in NZ. It's about time I got some Technic to build with the boys. Also got a couple of the smaller Star Wars minifigure sets on clearance as well (Endor Rebel / Imperial Trooper and Rebel Trooper Battle Pack).

Just over a week to go until I'm in the USA and I'm still undecided on what I should pick up from the Lego store :(

E: Regarding what moop said, TLG has kept a pretty consistent pp over the years. While it seems like sets are getting more expensive, I feel like it's got more to do with the fact that 15 years ago, my parents were the ones paying for the sets - now I'M feeling the wallet strain. ;)

No, the prices did jump considerably several years ago when the first dedicated Clone Wars CG show sets came out. They readjusted their MSRPs in the US to reflect the weaker dollar vs. the Euro, and thus sets that used to be about $20 were suddenly $35-40. For a very long time, it was unusual to see a LEGO set in any given wave break the $100 price point, even in the Star Wars line. Now at least two per wave are $100+ on average.

It's hard to argue with the level of quality and customer service LEGO provides, but you really do have to shop smart. In particular, I feel like the LEGO aisle at Toys R Us should come with a warning.

Did anybody pick up the Haunted House yet? I think that's going to be my next build I just wondering if anybody had any impressions or thoughts about it.

You might flip back a few pages, some folks have it and I think someone posted pics. I know there are pics of hauls with the HH, at least.

But...yes, more HH pics would be great guys! I would have gotten mine yesterday but now it's looking like 2013 sometime, so I must live vicariously through you all. :(

Turning the ENTIRE thing upside down. -_-

Oh god, that does sound truly awful.

You could put a couple 16x32 baseplates on (perpendicular to the usual modular baseplates so you can still open it) to even it out, but you still won't be able to hook it into the row without removing the hinges and/or the side door. If you did want it as part of your row, it could freestand on the left side of the row with the baseplates attached and look quite good IMO.

I got the ghost and grandfather clock to go with my haunted house. These are only available at Target. Most stores should have them, but they are in the backroom. There's suppose to be stocked when the Halloween displays get put up. Just ask nicely and give the employee this DPCI #: 204-00-0544 to have them get it from the back.

Got these today at Target. They are K'Nex and were a bit overpriced at $9.99 and the quality is shit but having some Beatles minifig type guys is pretty awesome. Now I just wish Lego would license the yellow submarine and we could some cool sets.

The design of the legs makes them look robotic.

You could remove the side door and make the middle front second floor window a doorway to the balcony.

Hrmm, I'll have to try that next year on the rebuild.

Oh god, what have I done. I moved into the US recently (I'll be here for a couple of years) and ordered my first modular, the fire brigade along a few other things.

I guess I'll just buy and extra case when I decide to go back home :P

Well, the Mini Town Hall set didn't actually take too long to build in the LDD:

I based it on a design I found online (petty much the only one that comes up when you search for it) by davekaleta on flickr:

I LOVED his design, but when I went to build it for myself I found out that it is actually much shorter than it should be! It was shorter than the mini Fire House when it should be taller. I assume that the reason for this is his clever part usage for the pillars. They look really good, but are actually shorter than scale, and if you just double it, they are too tall.

My solution to the pillar problem was to lengthen it by about 50%. There is a tiny, unavoidable gap right under each pillar, but it's hardly noticeable. I looked at pictures of the full sized modulars placed together to get an idea of just how tall it needs to be compared with the other mini-modulars and I think I got its proportions just right. Missing from the LDD images is the Ski Pole piece that is used for the light-post at the front of the building, but that's because the LDD doesn't actually have that piece!

(I'll upload the link to the LDD file as soon as I upload it. Need to set up a Moc pages account first)

Turning the ENTIRE thing upside down. -_-

I didn't have any issues with that part. I just turned it over on the table and applied the pieces and turned it back over. I thought it was a normal step that I didn't think twice about. Sorry it was an issue.

Now that I have found this thread, I have two questions.

1: Are lego sets from the early/mid 90s worth anything? My parents are finally asking me to clean all of mine out of their basement, and I have a ton of the black and green space sets and a bunch of ones that were red and black I think, along with what I remember as being some underwater themed ones. And since I don't have space for them all, they gotta go.

2: Is these an actual SSD set, or just instructions that you download and buy bricks for online, because I really want one.

Yes yes and yes
So yea old sets are worth money
The ssd is a proper set
You can also get the instructions and buy bricks individualy.

Be still my beating heart! Wife will be ticked but whatever. I'm getting one.

Also, I would assume having the instructions with my older sets increases the value a lot? I know I still have them all, but most of the boxes have long since been thrown out.

Toys r Us express had a bunch of Series 5 minifigs, so I picked up 10 of them at random since I didnt have any Series 5. 3 of them were the detective with the magnifying glass.

Lookin' good up there Harry! The Town Hall does look precarious though, ha ha...that is a great spot to display Diagon Alley, though.

And yes I will also be stealing those sweet diamond windows. Just in general the use of gaps is really interesting. Thanks for all the pics of that set, Christian! Jealous face. >;p

Hey guys need some help. Found someone selling an Enzo Ferrari set missing the manual, but all Legos still sealed in their own individual bags. Wants $50 and it's a 30 min drive. What say you Lego Gaf?

hey guys, awesome thread, been lurking for a while, despite the fact that i haven't bought a lego set for about ten years - i did, however, dig out my little brother's creator beach house recently. love compact/detailed sets like that, absolutely gorgeous. kinda annoyed that lego have almost completely stopped featuring alternate builds in their sets.

anyways, i started taking a look at some more recent creator sets, and came across the lighthouse, really liked the look of it. anyone have any experience with it? i love lighthouses in general, so it seems like a good buy

You really can't go wrong with the Creator series buildings, and the lighthouse is one of the best.

Highly recommend the Lighthouse Island, one of my favorite non-Fantasy builds. If memory serves, Amazon has it five to ten dollars cheaper than MSRP. I'd pick it up sooner than later, because a lot of stores are done stocking it.

Alright, cool, thanks guys. I'll try and order the lighthouse off amazon sometime in the near future then. love that the set comes with a minifig, as well, unlike that beach house that i currently own

The new beach house (7346 Seaside House) is really good, but you should get that lighthouse first, as it will be going OOP in the new year.

Going to take it down in a couple weeks to start the Halloween theme around the house.

My shelves are already packed with plastic crap, or I would start buying everything shown here. A local webshop has a bunch of stuff for 25% off, but at Swedish prices it's still fairly costly. I would consider any of the collector items, but they have none of those.

An eagle-eyed observer might also spot a reason why I can't afford more of this :D

Nah, just sell him and move into the Lego stuff. Especially if that reissue ever gets around to being made, oh boy will that plummet. Do you have him CIB?

I got him for around what a reissue would go for, so he's obviously not complete or in box. But I waited 20 years for that thing so I'm not giving him up just yet.

However, there is lots of other stuff I could probably part with...

Just finished building Helms Deep, and I actually really liked the set. Its not the most innovative set,but it came together quite well, especially with the addition of another wall from the other set (plus I have yet another one to put together). Pictures after I build that

And a set with lots of great MOC pieces too!
