Many if they do TMNT my wallet is just gonna bend over in preparation now, when I was a kid I never had figures or many other toys like gi joes or he man, I just had a fuckton of lego.

So whatever I was into at the time, whether it was TMNT, Ghostbusters, Batman etc I made with lego. I had Real Ghostbusters characters I used the robin hood legomen as TMNT (as they were the only ones in green at the time), batman I had a black spaceman with ears and cape made from a vinyl pencil case that I cut up.

Each of them had their own buildings and vehicles, for ghostbusters it was their HQ and ecto-1 , 2 etc. For TMNT it was sewers and channel 9 building, turtle van, bikes and technodrome. For batman I had a whole town built on a table about 2 foot high, I had a "mansion" that had a ton of those aerial pieces connected down to the floor for a batpole which had a batcave built on the floor with batmobile, batwing, bat ski boat I even made that duck thing the penguin drives around in in batman returns.

I even had a burton batman and 60s blue batman as well as a superman, catwoman, joker, penguin etc.

So with batman already covered and rumours of TMNT that only leaves Ghostbusters...

I wish there were more Kingdom/Castle sets, I thought I'd lust after the LoTR sets more than I do (The set pieces just don't seem as cool as the Kingdom/Castle series). Eventually I want to get the Joust set before it goes OOP so that will be next after the newest "Winter" set coming out in October.

The LotR sets are cooler than they look. They just don't translate well on the box, but I've been pleased as punch with everything in the line. Gandalf Arrives, at the very least, is a mandatory set, especially for a Castle fan.

I'm just putting the final touches on my "double Joust," and I have to say that I prefer just one set when it comes to the main building in the center. Having the two halves sandwiched together is a cool effect from a distance, but it just doesn't work out that well in practice without major modification.

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I strongly recommend the Royal Joust. It's a fantastic set. You might feel like you need two looking at the box, though, and while it is nice to have the extra buildings on the side and the extra minifigs, that other half of the "castle" chunk doesn't work out too well.

Although it is OOP, I wonder if the King's Castle (7946) could be combined with the walls from the Joust set to make a super combo Castle with Jousting field?

Ditto. The sets really do look so much better in person than the boxes and pics allow. And there are tons of neat little flourishes to the sets as you build them. Especially in Mines of Moria.

Someone on Eurobricks did a review where they took pictures of them together:

The same holds for the walls. They are very different, as is shown in the following picture.

Yes the colour scheme is similar, but the walls from the Jousting set are lower and more patchy.

They seem to be inner city walls while the Castle walls are clearly outside walls. All in all it seems that the Castle can be used as city wall, while the Joust can be used as the keep inside the city.

More importantly, however, I feel that this set was meant to match the MMV. The style of the buildings is the same, as is the colour scheme and the (type of) detailing.

Both pictures are not even the usual suspects, as the Squire's hub obviously fits the blue Inn from the MMV set. Regarding the size of the two sets: the MMV buildings are as tall as the bley parts of the keep (i.e. excluding the roof).

Helms Deep has been in my Amazon cart for $103 for the last week. If Walmart has them on clearance for $89 though I think i'm finally going to break and get it.

Sounds like we may get a neat restaurant/??? for the next modular? Could be cool!

Also, I love playing catchup in this thread after a full day of running around. Always so much exciting and fun stuff to read!

A classic city diner would be cool. Like that famous painting.

I need some advice. I've got my eyes on the following:

Death Star
Firehouse
Haunted Mansion
Jabba's Palace
Sand Skiff

I've got a 10% coupon for September, and I know about the double points in October and I know buying Jabba's Palace and Sand Skiff now gets me double points currently. I currently have 513 VIP points too.

I'm a bit iffy on the Death Star since it's so expensive but I know it's not long for this world. I really would like the Haunted Mansion for a Halloween display. I also don't need Jabba's Palace and Sand Skiff immediately since I know they just came out and they'll be around for awhile.

What do you think my best plan of attack given all these factors that gives me the best bang for my buck and tries to spread out my purchases as much as possible?

I'm doing Death Star next month. Double VIP means I'll be able to grab one of the OTHER sets on my list for nice and cheap.

By Firehouse, I think you're referring to the Fire Brigade? If so, get that ASAP as it's not in the latest catalog. That's usually a good indication that we're about to say goodbye to a set.

By Firehouse you mean Fire Brigade right? Because if any set in that list is going to disappear first, it is that. But, Death Star is a mighty set, and getting 10% off of that is a really good deal. Haunted House is next on my list to grab, just for decorating for Halloween.

I would wait on Jabba's Palace and Sand Skiff. Those are brand new and easily available, and will most likely be parts of sales at many places for a while.

In other words: Fire Brigade first, just because it is no longer in the Lego catalog, so it is a goner (although we thought it would be gone by now.). Then Death Star, just for the sheer magnificent size of it.

I went to my local LEGO store today at lunch and noticed they were finally out of the Fire Brigade. I asked the manager and he said that he is pretty sure its discontinued at this point. So if you want it, you better get it quick!

You have effectively a single shot 10% voucher for September, and an infinite 5% voucher if double points come along (normal 5% doubled to 10%)

Logic dictates you spend the 10% one on the death star, but you sound uncertain, so make sure you actually want it, rather than just think you should get it (very possible in this thread)

Second on the list would be the fire brigade as its gone v,soon.

Haunted house you can pick up on double points in October, still in time for Halloween.

I'd say go for fire brigade now (assuming you'll go for other modulars too), haunted house in October and wait on the death star. Will probably still be here through Christmas at least?

GUESS THE SET CHALLENGE!

These are only two of 15 containers filled with parts. I might post pics of all the pieces, but the sheer volume of the same parts is staggering when sorted. I had no idea just how many of these pieces there were while building it.

And yes, I plan on doing a time lapse of the rebuild.

Is it a moon?

I am so glad this was not available in gashapon machines at my local toy store. It would be hell trying to get them all...

Aren't you from 'schland? Which store
offers such nice prices?

I walk through kaufhof every now and then and I've been lucky on several occasions.
Got that large Atlantis star gate set for 30€
Often they are one off items they still have lying arround, but they had 3 earth defence hqs
And I had never seen the Atlantis set there before it was on sale...

So getting some work done on my ISD UCS. Got to the part attaching the panels to the magnets.... yea this is some scary stuff

I want an army of Jawas and astromech droids.

UCS's are not big on mini figs, most have no figs included usually. Sandcrawler would make a good normal big set, like the current Death Star.

The chimney looks to be clever use of slope pieces and jumper bricks to offset them.

The middle section is thick enough it could be as simple as technic studs or axles going through it to give the angle.

It's the sloped middle I can't figure out. The chimney is fucking brilliant - I smiled when I saw that. It's an incredibly fine use of SNOT. But that roof...It's at such a bizarre angle. Without seeing ALL of the model, I get that it's hard to picture, but damn.

Well, the chimney is almost no SNOT. Unless you count jumper plates as SNOT, but the stud is still on top. :)

And I still think it is technic pins on the interior of that middle piece that gives it an angle.

Amazing work though.

You're right - I'm confusing it with the image I saw of another similar "modern" piece. My bad! (E: I spend WAY too much time on MOC Pages, and everyone else here should, too!!!)

But yes, it's a gorgeous piece overall!

Also!

You're right! I didn't think about using Technic pins (which I should have given the way the SSD is put together)...Check out this pic and you can TOTALLY see the pins! I was never even LOOKING for them when I was going through the pics yesterday. Haha - how fricken brilliant is that.

Sweet Lion of Zion, that is the kind of architecture set I wish Lego was selling. What they sell makes no sense... Why make something clearly targeted at older crowd but make it all simple and crummy.

Here's what I don't get. Yes, these sets on MOC Pages have oodles of pieces, but some of the design choices can be relatively simplified (not using a shit ton of 1x1/1x2 plates for brick work), but the general design and appearance could be kept relatively intact. A little bit of detail work throughout would go a LONG way.

So what I don't get is exactly what you're asking - if the Architecture line is basically aimed at the older crowd (because most younger kids have no sense of why something like Fallingwater is amazing), why not simply design the sets with that in mind?

same question I asked when the crappy tiny Big Ben came out. I suppose the answer is that these sets are either collected and displayed, so are better to be small, and/or they are sold in tourist locations (eg big ben in London gift shops) and so need to be under a certain impulse buy price point.

I think it is the size of the set and the box to keep it an attractive but expensive impulse buy.

It would be nice if each year there was an UCS architecture set, like along the lines of Tower Bridge or Taj Mahal.

But if you look at the cost of some of the Architecture sets, it does exactly the opposite of the bolded statement. I picked up the Grand Emporium this weekend at the LEGO store. I was going to grab either Sungnyemun or Guggenheim, but not at those prices. They need to re-evaluate their pricing decisions on these sets. Yeah, the books are a nice touch, but it's no reason to bump the price up.

With the talk of double VIP in October, does anyone know if the UK does this as well?

they have in the past, but I'm not sure they are as regular or the same time as the US.

They currently have £5 off during September on the back of their autumn catalogue (you can probably pick one up in store).

Was Death Star in the catalog? My wife already threw mine away :P

It got bumped to the front of the line but now I'm thinking I should grab Fire Brigade.

no, but there wasn't Grand Emporium or Fire Brigade, or Tower Bridge. They were focusing on their new stuff like LotR

Okay, thanks. Grand Emporium is out too, huh? Now I'm thinking FB + GE and just hope for the Death Star for Christmas, or something. I certainly can't buy all of them this year, and I'd rather have the modulars in the end.

Construct the middle plate with a large hole in the middle. Have bricks off the main building that support and hold the plate in place at an angle.

Arbitrary angles yay.

I'm pretty sure they were BOTH in the catalog. Tower Bridge I don't remember...But Death Star and GE I'm nearly 100% positive on.

Is the Grand Emporium as good of a build as the Fire Brigade? I only have the Fire Brigade, and if the Grand Emporium is going out of print very soon I might consider it too.

No, I have 3 (FB, GE and pet shop) and i thought GE was the least fun out of the 3 with FB being maybe one of my favorite ever.
