I would not go into the 'Train' series of LEGO yet. It may drag me down a bottomless hole of meters of train tracks bought along with boxes of Power Functions. Then you turn your eye to the other train sets that are OOP...

*shivers*

That is my great fear with it. I never really felt much for the trains, but the Horizon Express just looked so nice and made me want to get trains.

The VW Camper is one that everyone seems to gush over, and all the little touches of it intrigue me. The size of the set itself is also cool as it is compact but a great display piece.

Shuttle Expedition is probably the ones I have the least interest in, even if space sets were what were my obsession as a child.

I know all three sets are well regarded though, and was wanting opinions. And so far, it is evenly split. But Ghostmind makes a compelling argument that trains seem to spike in price big time, and that is what makes me think that will disappear first. Especially with Horizon Express on the way in a month or so.

Alright, I have a really tough one for all of you.

If I could pick ONLY one of the following sets to get, which would it be?

Shuttle Expedition
Maersk Train
VW Camper Van

All three are coming up on two years old. All three are close in price. All three are extremely well regarded sets.

Of the three, which one would be the most highly suggested and why?

I'm biased towards the Shuttle. Partially because it's the only one of those I have, but also: It's the Space Shuttle. It's not some train, it's not a van you might see on the road, it's the SPACE SHUTTLE.

Oh man, that's difficult. I have all three.

The most fun to build was probably the VW Camper - the interior is a bit 'fire brigade second floor'

Display wise, probably between the VW and the maersk. Shuttle is fantastic and I love the space shuttle generally, but the other two just edge ahead. The maersk train gets points for not looking like lego at first but the VW has that 'legofied' twist to it which gives it character.

Gun to head - VW Camper

Plus you know if you buy maersk you'll need to get emerald night too, so the camper is a safe single buy with no associated series. And the shuttle is more common so you have a chance to pick up in a sale at amazon/toys r us etc before it disappears. Personally I'd prioritise all three before any recent sets or 2013 sets, they stand head and shoulders above most other sets and are classics in the making

I wouldn't worry about being 'dragged' into trains. There are only three major trains including the horizon express, and only one OOP (emerald night) which is still relatively affordable if you dig around. Sets like the Christmas train or Santa Fe are edge cases - bit like market street is to the modulars (IMO at least)

Time wise, are they all 'done' or just finishing soon? Logic would suggest the maersk gets pulled anytime now to make space for the horizon, but the shuttle is surely almost an evergreen, and relatively affordable. Same with the VW, they don't really have anything to replace it, but may pull it if sales aren't great I guess

I only own the shuttle out of these three and I love it. It's a great display set. Next on my list would be the vw camper but that's just what I would want. I can't comment on the actual set as I don't own it.

got the christmas catalogue through the post from lego. Has an offer inside of a pick a brick box when you spend over £50 by christmas, and you can fill it up after christmas (I guess they think you might also buy something on the return visit)

but I also have a postcard from them about brick friday, offering the mini christmas set with purchases over £50. Would those stack?

Behold my white whale:

Someday she will be mine.

I... Had never seen this before. Damn. When I bought the Toy Shop a couple of weeks ago the clerk mentioned if I wanted the full set I would need the train-was not expecting it to look so good. I will likely shoot for Bakery & Post office before Christmas. The cottage is amazing but it will be around next year.

I was at Downtown Disney yesterday and picked up a couple of the Christmas polybags and the Santa magnet. The latter is awesome.

Where'd you buy toy shop at?

An officially licensed independent Lego store in the Toronto area, Lasting Toys. I mention them every few posts because they are rad. They sell all series 2 and onward mini figs (sealed) at regular price. A great place to find imported sets from around the world too.

god.. I'd lose my mind if I found that set for a reasonable price. Everywhere online has absurd OOP markups

Because you love the modular series, I'd go with the Maersk Train. You can easily add in to a huge modular scene!

That's probably why they're on sale now!

I picked up my Maersk last week at the Lego store near me for 108 also; which is 10% off of 120 so it's basically the same as the Lego.com deal but off the shelf into my mitts in mint box condition (no risk of shipping crushing)!

Hey, there's an idea. I could put it on some elevated tracks behind our modular street. That would free up space I the spare room to finally build tower bridge.

By "need to get the emerald night train set" you mean "want to get the emerald night train set" right? :)

Because I just got the Maersk and I would love to have the emerald, but I'm not getting it at OOP prices, so it kind of exists in my dreams really more than a tangible reality where I would actually fork out the dough to have it...

... My point is, you can get the train and chill for a while because Dat Orange Train isn't going anywhere for awhile which gives you time to get the shuttle then the van. Or vice versa.

But, the shuttle is 94.99 on amazon right now and my local Lego store doesn't have any, so maybe the rareness rank might actually be:

Shuttle (not in my store)
Maersk ( on sale online and in store)
VW (?)

Yah, by need I meant 'need' - Phoniclebone himself basically said as much, so I wasn't being too enabling :)

If I go Maersk, I won't be hunting down Emerald Night. OOP prices are too insane for me. But if I find it on a good deal, I might. But trains frighten me because it could explode into an obsession. Ha. Who am I kidding?

So my flashlight trick works! Was able to make out the Aztec Warriors shield and helmet and the Ocean Kings trident and fishtail body!

No more mystery! No more guessing!!!

Mwuhuhahaha!

Joystiq has instructions on how to design the Sine Mora ships out of legos.

The Maersk Train is 10% off in the stores around me, a couple of sets and keychains are this week.

I don't see why not. And what's even better is that there's a voucher on the back.

Still think the Lego pick a brick box is a bit silly. Would be nice if you could use it there and then rather than being forced to come back after Christmas.

Just got this email from LEGO:

Yeah, I got that email too. What is weird is that they used the Christmas Gift to illustrate it but I'm pretty sure you can only get that set at a later date. Unless...

It is 10% off online as well. Going to wait until midnight for the VIP exclusive event before ordering.

I was thinking of doing this as well.....The wife will be mad...cause I told her no more Lego this year....but I MUST!

You bought it this year to build it next year because next year it won't be around anymore. So you had to buy it this year otherwise you would'nt be able to get it next year!

That is what I told her about the last.....(counting).....5 sets I bought.

In the same boat; I just have the shuttle out of the three choices. But, if I could do it over, the shuttle would be the last of the three to get. Don't get me wrong; I love the set and it's a great display piece, but that is about it. It is kinda fragile, as part of the weight is put onto the tail fin, so that will come loose after a while.

My problem is now deciding between the Van and the train. Never really been into trains (love them as a kid, but grew out of them), but the experience of building one seems like a blast.

Dammit, do I need to postpone my Christmas scene plans to get a fucking train? :D

Are you saying that if I place the Shuttle vertically (nose towards the heavens) on my desk that if I bump my desk once or twice a week that the tailfin will just fall off?!!!

But was it true about those 5?
Tell her you THOUGHT that those last 5 were going OOP but this set really IS going OOP!!!

Ordered 1-7 in the order that I bought these items. Looks like the train will be #8. I have also been piecing together Cafe Corner from Lego PAB and Bricklink....

7 Imperial Shuttle
6 Grand Emporium
5 Pet Shop
4 Tower Bridge
3 Winter Village Bakery and Post Office
2 Fire Brigade
1 SSD

I love the Shuttle. It's been one of my favorite builds (dat landing gear) and is an amazing display piece.

Having said that, I'm really trying to fight off the urge to get a train.

Treat them like static models and you should be ok.
