The Leopard / Il Gattopardo (Netflix Limited Series)

Now normally I don't really go in for these period piece drama tv shows, but after seeing the trailer I added this to my Netflix queue, because it looks pretty impressive.

Now apparantly there is also an older movie from 1963, with Claudia Cardinale and Burt Lancaster. Maybe I should check that out as well

Anyone who has seen it yet? Well just a shoutout because it looks pretty cool to me.

Wow. Looks very good!
The original is a classic. I’ve seen parts of it, never the full movie though.
The books is monstrously well-written (in Italian, of course). Just a pleasure to read, even if you don’t know or care about the historical events it talks about.

Just for the historically and visually accurate set piece decoration of the 1800s, The Leopard is on par with Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. Cinematography is obviously a direct influence on Godfather 1/2 when they go to Italy.

To first timers watching this: Try reading a wikipedia or short youtube video on the History of Risorgimento of the time. I personally didn't know Italy was a "Kingdom" with family ties to Spanish/French Royalty.

Once that soaks in just remind yourself that Burt Lancaster's character "The Leopard" is from that very lineage. The way he looks at the "new generation" of the Elite, who's just come into "new money" with their bourgeoisie ways without class or manners. It's a masterclass in subtle body language and micro expressions of the face. I only wish Morricone's score was as memorable as the scenery.
