I just started playing ME2 and apparently if you run it in borderless window mode, the Xbox windows app lets you record clips. Behold- cardboard stiff faces.

Well personally I didn't like how some levels in the singleplayer were obvious multiplayer maps.
Those were just extra bits thrown in, none of them were essential to the story. It was bonus gameplay the wouldn't have been there without having been made for multiplayer.

ah man, Mass Effect 2.

perhaps everyone is right in that Me1 was the better game, - I'll say maybe it had a better story, but for now I'm gonna have to leave the crown with Me2.

"Everyone" is a vocal minority in GAF. As far as I can tell, ME3 and ME2 are, and are considered (by far and large) to be better actual games.

Considering most people first experienced ME1 on 360, which was a technical mess from what I've heard, it's not too surprising. Then there was the difficult to control, bouncy, Mako, mostly used on copy/paste planets filled with mountains, cliffs and empty fields. Combat that wasn't nearly as good as the sequels, and, well... yeah. Not surprising.

which is?
A big, open space adventure. I'm sure that's what some would argue we got, but I don't think we did. The ambition of it was clearly there but instead most if the game was:

I mean even with the removal of side-junk you still had a series linear missions with frequent shitty vehicular sections and my personal distaste for Sovereign as an antagonist.

I know most people hated the Mako in ME1, and are afraid that they're gonna get something similar in Andromeda, but if they can make it less bouncy, faster and more agile + make the planets more unique and alien looking, I'm sure these same people will learn to love the Mako and what it should have been in the first place.

Man I can't wait for E3 and finally see this game. How many days left now?

They would (I should hope) have some level of assistance or guidance from the NFS developers who are on the same engine.

I personally never had any problems with the Mako. I enjoyed the combat; loved sniping turrets from far away and loved jumping to dodge missiles. I enjoyed the exploration, too. It's impossible to flip the Mako over so it's perfect for exploring rocky planets.

hm, was that really the image bioware set out to create? Me1 was originally an xbox 360 game that came out 2 years after the console and was a new IP. how much did we know/have to go off of before the game came out?

Spoken like someone who's never had to deal with their Mako getting caught upside-down at the bottom of a mountain, with such fucked up level geometry that you can't turn yourself right-side up.

Make no mistake: the Mako in ME1 is hot garbage.

speaking of planets, I would if they somehow managed to allow exploration on gas giants.

when I first played lair of the shadow broker I deadass thought it was taking place in/on a gas giant planet. If they ever were to have missions there, that'd be one way to do it.

What choices do you guys recommend for the ending of ME1 in a paragon playthrough based on the consequences in the following games?

This is regarding 'save the council' and 'promote Udina or Anderson.'

The derelict reaper was close to a brown dwarf iirc.
but we never went to the brown dwarf.

killing the council does result in some humorous (and regrettable) consequences in Me2. I guess save them even it is costly. Does giving the ambassador spot to Udina really result in renegade points?

The impact is minimum on both of your choices.

Regardless of your choice for Udina or Anderson in ME1, Udina will still be the councilor in ME3, and in ME2, other that some dialogues on the Citadel... that's about it.

You never see that the infamous human council that replaced the old alien one in ME2, and in ME3, that human council no longer exist, instead you got a Turian, Asari and Salarian, just like the previous one.

Whether you play paragon or renegade, it won't affect the story enough to actually matter. It might be more interesting to let the council die and see what the new Council has to say about this in ME3, and how they differ from the original one, but that's about it.

All in all, it's very disappointing. Almost as bad as the Rachni choice being overall meaningless. "Oh no, the Rachni queen has been replaced by a Rachni frankenstein zombie thing. Wait. That's it? The mission stays the same overall? Nothing happens afterward other than codex entries? Ugh."

That can be done on any planet with clouds. Hagalaz wasn't a gas giant in the first place iirc.
right, which opens up the possibility of exploring gas giants, should they feel like adding that.

I thought Miranda's default outfit was shit, so I modded it out. Jacob wasn't changed.

Ah the joys of PC modding. I unlocked Legion as soon as I could travel around the galaxy, waaay before what the game intended.
Funny how many lines they recorded for him that have been left into the game. I wonder how they originally planned him to be available. Surely you weren't supposed the find the Reaper IFF so early in the game. Maybe he used to have a totally different mission to recruit him, and they just deleted that and put him in the Reaper's corpse mission instead.

Another pro of modding : Free minerals to completely avoid scanning! Thank god.

I feel that people like ME1 for the promise of what it could have been versus the product we got in the end.
I appreciate ME1 for what it is.

There's a reason I do about a yearly 100 percent run of it, and I've played it twice as much as either of the other games.

Haha, yes. There's another one that bypasses the hacking minigames.

I'd sooner eat glass >.>
I've only been able to play ME1 properly after I realized I can bind the speed/fast-forwarding command to a key so the "exploration" isn't as much of a drag.

In my first (and thus far only) playthrough of Me1, I had to switch the difficulty from normal to easy because I could not, for the life of me, beat it :( such a n00b

Speaking of exploration's drag in ME1... Last time I played it(this month :p), for the first time ever, I used a command console to improved Shepard's running speed to 10x the normal speed. What a godsend for a game where you can only run while in combat, and for a very short time.

I always go Soldier and focus on assault rifles ^

Since we're on the subject, what are some essential mods for the three PC games?

For ME1 I'm using MEUITM for textures and ME1Controller.

For ME2 I'll be using ME2Controller and considering the mod that removes the little squadmates' heads at the bottom of the HUD. Anyone have any experience with it?

I probably would have stopped playing it a while ago if it weren't for mods and the command console.

yeah I guess. that was the first time I played so I suppose I could've done better later. what class was your favorite in the first game?
Sentinel for ME1. Vanguard, Adept, or Sentinel for ME2/ME3.

i started off as sentinel in Me2 but I'm usually a vanguard, and I went soldier to get the insanity trophy.

I heard adept is the most fun one in Me1

Not sure if you want to count gedosato, but there's that if you want downsampling. As for your second question, I haven't used that mod myself, although I would recommend the Shorter Loadings mod for ME2 as well as this texture overhaul for ME2 though the latter mod can take hours to implement unlike MEUTIM.

edit: Here's some more textures (4096x4096).

Sentinel.

You get the full range of tech and biotic powers, and with no global cooldown you can spam them out. Bonus points if you go Bastion as your advanced class, and hit the point where you can damage enemies in Stasis.

Also means that you can pretty much take any party, because you've got all the areas covered and can open any container.

Tend to take Assault Rifle as my bonus ability, although there's a bug with Sentinels and the limited size of the Power Wheel where you can actually lose an ability if you're not careful.

Usually play on Hardcore without any real problems. Focus on Electronics early on to get the highest amount of shields, and just use cover intelligently.

Most people got to know ME as a series from the sequels. The original was a 360 exclusive earlier in the gen. GAF is simply a place where you can find people who played all of them upon release and are vocal about it.

From an objective and mechanical standpoint, I can understand the argument for 2 & 3 being better. Creative vision and scope fall in favor of ME1, combined with ME1 having been highly regarded when it released, I find it unsurprising that a lot of people who played from the get go consider 1 the best. And I'm not surprised that we know the moody, film inspired, and open vast exploration are all being reattempted in the vein of ME1 for the new trilogy. There's a lot to love of 2 and 3, particularly in its action and grittier sensibilities. However, they had something with the original and and never got it back with that dreamy astronaut space opera inspiringly woven with meditative score, walking through dust on plains lit by foreign stars, catching stares in neon blue lights of opulent social centers in pristine space stations. Mass Effect was like some noble everyman's long way from home being introduced to a beautiful glimmering space culture being threatened by splinters in the seals.

The sequels moved toward an angle of more crowded, grimy space that you were to understand potentially were flat out in charge of and affecting everything. Those ambitious and bright citizens in ME1 were recharacterized as actually a piece of a dreadfully oppressed populous, largely concerned with long existing criminals. Space wasn't shining, but rather was simply thick metal and vicious drug clubs. You were no longer out there to learn, but rather were an angry rockstar resurrected, sporting your military rank as a brand and crew as demolition specialists instead of siblings.

Some devs admitted losing some of ME1's vision and thus regained some of the atmosphere and allure for ME3 that few parts of ME2 touched upon in its developer-dubbed "darker" movement.

But hey, I fell for the vision described in ME1 video promos from 10 years ago now so I surely have some emotion filtering into my opinion.

Oh, you also need to make sure you kill everything on foot in ME1. No Mako kills at all.

There's an exp penalty if you don't, and if you want to hit level 58 in a single run you need to do what you can to maximize experience.

Ehh, I felt the crew had far better camaraderie and better relationships between each other in 2 and 3. Hell, the writing of your companions was one of the massive improvements they made going from 1 to 2.

edit: ME1's vision seemed closer to a sci-fi Thedas more than anything else. I mean that, the galaxy at the outset was presented as being both old and large. You had species in space longer than humanity has had most civilizations, you had wars like the Krogan rebellions being waged on a galactic level while humanity was still fingering its butthole. Similarly, while people attribute (excessive) importance to the main characters in DA, Thedas' history is old as balls. No event during the DA games were close to being as big as the Chantry Schism, the Qunari invasion, Blights 1-4, or the collapse of Elven civilization.

ME1's promise I think, like DA's was to have your character create their own chapter in the Galaxy's, and Thedas' history to sit along-side a long list of historical events that have happened in each respective setting. ME went a little off the rails though by making Shepard and his struggle literally the only thing that mattered in the entire damn ME universe.

I love Mass Effect 1, but I will freely agree to this. In ME1, the crew were broad sketches, barring Wrex in my opinion.

The crew felt a bit more like people (albeit people way too obsessed with daddy issues) in ME2. Although I'll argue that Kaiden and Ashley's characterizations actually took a step backwards, but they're not playable, so...

Honestly, the crew didn't feel like a unified crew until ME3, when you had a lot more interactions between the various crew members.

It's something that Dragon Age has generally always done well (interactions between party members outside your influence), while ME has somewhat struggled.

Is there some mod for ME3 PC that allows you to holster your weapons? I know there's probably no animation ingame for it, but still would be something nice to have.

I'm around 99% sure there was.
This, but it has quirks.

Mass Effect 1: Infiltrator. Because pistols are great :]
